We’ve been complaining to our government for more than 20 years but there’s no help. “We have had enough of a non-member who operates illegally on our route. How come government fails to discipline a non-member in the province or is there a hidden agenda here, we need to know. “This person fails to comply with the agreement made in 2001 at the provincial transport offices in Mahikeng, he steals our passengers on our roads even at the Brits taxi rank. We are now going to stop him by force, but peacefully,” Serakwane said. According to MAJETO, Molefe does not respect them and does not comply with the agreement made in 2001. The association said Molefe must comply with their R15 price to Brits but he fails them because he asks passengers to pay R12. Majeto further said that Molefe’s taxi drivers are misbehaving on the route by swearing at their drivers and that one of them stabbed a MAJETO driver with a screw driver recently. George Molefe refused to comment on the matter, referring all questions back to MAJETO. TAXI VIOLENCE: Could Maboloka break out in taxi violence? Bapo-Ba-Mogale visit Brits Hospital

The visit by the leadership of the Bapo-Ba-Mogale at the refurbished Brits hospital in North West recently, proved to be yet another concrete partnership between the government and the tribal authorities in ensuring that all the adopted programs of the government in particular of health services receive a relevant support by the local communities. The delegation from Bapo-Ba-Mogale, led by the chief’s representative Chief Joros Mogale, was taken on a tour to see the hospital and learn about all the services the hospital is offering. The delegates included the chief’s daughter, Princes Itumeleng Mogale who was overwhelmed by the state of art of the hospital and by the level of services

rendered by the hospital staff as well as the cleanliness of the facility. Chief Joros Mogale also expressed his excitement about the visitation. “We are very thankful that the hospital created this platform and indeed we are proud of the services they offer and their achievements that we were not aware of. We are looking forward to a great partnership between the chieftaincy and the hospital,” Mogale said. The visit provided a platform for both the hospital’s management and the Bapo- Ba-Mogale leadership to build a strong relationship between the two institutions to tackle diseases that local communities face on a daily basis. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital, Babe Mosuwe, highlighted the

importance of the participation of the local authority on issues related to the health sector.“Recently our MEC Dr. Magome Masike said during our hospitals leadership seminar that the custodianship of quality health outcomes is not only in the hands of political bearers and officials of health, but it is also in the hands of community leaderships and civil societies. “With regards to revenue collections, we have indeed been a cut above the rest when compared to the other health facilities in the district,” Mosuwe said.Mosuwe raised a number of challenges that the hospital faces on a daily basis, such as lack of vehicles (ambulances) and malnutrition cases.

11 nabbed for illegal firearms

Police in Brits made a major breakthrough recently when they arrested eleven suspects aged between 25 and 50 for various offences ranging from robbery, theft of motor vehicles, carjacking and illegal possession of firearms. These crimes were committed in the Letlhabile, Tlhabane, Hebron and Loata areas and the police believe that the suspects could be part of a syndicate operating in the Pretoria North, Brits and Rustenburg areas. In Loate, the police opened cases of illegal possession of firearms against the accused. In Letlhabile, a case of car hijacking and robbery was opened against some of the suspects. This was after a vehicle transporting cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of money was hijacked in transit. All the suspects are currently still in detention but will be expected to appear before the Brits Magistrate Court soon. Brits Acting Cluster Commander Brigadier Bertha Kgoroba acknowledged the bravery of the police officers in apprehending the criminals. In light of the upcoming festive season, Kgoroba also urged the police and other security agencies to remain alert as several criminal activities are usually reported during this period. “Let us remain vigilant and squeeze crime to zero,” she said.

Three escapees rearrestedThree of the six alleged criminals who escaped from the Brits police holding cells through the roof have been rearrested. However, the other three are yet to be apprehended and are on the run. The police, who established a task team

shortly after the three escaped, successfully pursued them and put them behind bars. Between 15 and 17 November, the police rearrested Solomon Modumba (28) and Kabelo Seemela (20) in Pretoria while they managed to catch up with Kabelo Matladi (23) in Letlhabile.

Jimmy Nguleni, Koketso Kau and Hendric Ndou are still at large and the police are requesting members of the community to come forward with any helpful information regarding their whereabouts. “Any valuable information about the wanted accused should be directed to Brits Police

Acting Detective Head Lt Col Tau on 082 444 3673. Your assistance is appreciated in advance,” the police said in a statement. The three accused are all detained in the Brits police holding cells and will appear before the Brits Magistrates Court soon to face escape charges.

Matric vacation: A rite of passage or a safety hazard?Matric Vacation, or affectionately referred to as Matric Vac, is considered to be a rite of passage for matriculants across the country, who celebrate the end of their school career. It usually takes the form of a vacation to the coast with a group of friends, causing many a parent to lie awake at night worrying about their child. According to the Road Traffi c Management Corporation, there are roughly 40 deaths per day and 14 000 deaths per annum on South African roads. Human error is the largest contributor to all this carnage. Up to 65% of fatal crashes are alcohol related while pedestrians walking drunk on the roads account for just under 40% of all road fatalities. Speeding and being distracted by cell phones while using the road is sited to be one of the leading causes of accidents in addition to head on collisions that are largely caused by inconsiderate driving behaviour. “Having your child take their fi rst tentative steps towards independence, behind the wheel of a car and far away from home is often a very frightening experience for a parent,” says John Edmeston, CEO of Cartrack, a leading vehicle tracking and recovery, fl eet management and telematics service provider. “Not only is peer pressure and driving inexperience a serious concern, but crime such as hijacking is also never far from your mind. Far from wanting a ‘big brother’ approach, being able to know that your child is safe, driving responsibly and can be located

quickly if they need help or assistance, is a great comfort,” he adds. Vehicle tracking together with telematics provide a very plausible solution to keeping track of a young driver. Today, many tracking units utilise Global Positioning System (GPS) technology that will provide parents with a wealth of information at an affordable price. “Besides being able to pinpoint the exact location of a vehicle in real-time, telematics is also able to furnish an accurate recount of the vehicle’s movements and how and when it was driven,” Edmeston explains.Another added benefi t of utilising a car tracking unit that has telematics (tracking and diagnostics) capabilities is the unit’s accurate accident reconstruction abilities. “Young and inexperienced drivers are often assumed to be in the wrong, even when a collision was not their fault. The speed at which the vehicle was travelling, kinematics of movement, momentum, directionality, braking and cornering all paint a clear picture of what transpired leading up to and during a collision, that could very well exonerate a young driver,” says John. While vehicle tracking provides the perfect tool it does however open a whole can of worms when it comes to the issue of trust. “It is always a good idea to have an open and honest discussion with all family members. Explain the risks that are involved and if need be, use the statistics to emphasize the danger of drunken driving, speeding and your child’s

vehicle possibly being stolen or hijacked,” Edmeston says.“While your child will most likely understand the reasoning behind the installation of a vehicle tracking unit, it will also set a clear parameter in which he or she can operate without it feeling like you are checking on them,” he adds.A GPS tracking unit offers geo-fencing that sets a virtual perimeter for a real-world geographical area. “If you discuss the locations that you expect your child to be at certain times, then you can set a geo-fence on their travelling location that will alert you if the vehicle was to move outside the perimeter. We recently added accident assist to our bouquet of product offerings that further bolsters a parent’s peace of mind by acting as an intelligent safety precaution that will provide your child with access to medical and road side assistance in the event of an accident, no matter where they are in the

country,” says Edmeston. The pure tracking component of the unit allows for the vehicle to be recovered in the event of it being stolen, but it also provides an online portal that will allow the family to log on from any location to check where the vehicle is. “We have all been young and we all know that parties and irresponsible behaviour is almost part and parcel of a young person’s rite of passage to the life of a responsible adult,” says Edmeston. “There is however no greater risk and the fatalities amongst our youth on the roads are frightening. While there is no excuse for bad and reckless behaviour, we would like to urge parents to have a serious discussion with their children before they embark on their matric vacation and to reassure them that they can call you if something goes wrong, no matter what the situation may be,” he concludes.

Tswana Dance – A unique fruit saladWhilst it’s no secret that African culture is withering away as more and more black young people adapt themselves to westernized behaviours – young people from Bokone Bophirima are set to preserve their culture. LEVY MOKWELE visited some of these young people.

Songs such as “Ke longwa ke Matsetse” and other Setswana cultural hits such as “Theledi” and “Sananapo” can be heard echoing from a distant community hall as a visitor enters a remote village in the North West province.Entering the hall, one is confronted by a dance troupe made of young people in a well choreographed procession of dance steps such as Borankana, Setepa, Phatisi and Tsutsubele. What a Sunday afternoon! The majority of the North West people are Batswana in origin and their language is Setswana. Other cultural groups who reside in the province are the Ndebeles in the east and the Sothos in the south. The many cultures of the province are to be found in every aspect of the people’s daily lives – in their houses, beadwork, pottery and music, song and dance which is strongly growing amongst young people in the province.Today, almost every village has a traditional dance group that seeks to keep the province’s rich Tswana culture alive. Now the North West prides itself with a unique blend of talent, with a pulse so vivid throughout every village and city.Notwithstanding the lack of facilities, abundance of performances take place in classrooms, school halls, churches, streets and backyards. When one enters a village or city, Tswana traditional hit songs such as: Ke longwa ke Matsetse, Theledi and Sananapo can be heard during rehearsals conducted by seasoned traditional dance instructors. The Mmabana Cultural Centres, located at Taung, Tlhabane, Mafikeng and Lehurutshe and newly established community arts centres in Bray, Atamelang, Kanana and Maubane are important centres were future traditional dance instructors are groomed. The traditional dance units at these centers are often the only opportunity that future traditional dance instructors have to learn, express and nurture their talents under the guidance of professional and seasoned traditional dance instructors.Mogwase Township in the Bojanala district municipality, situated only five minutes drive from the glittering Sun City resorts is a home to Seramphetshane traditional dance group. Renowned for it’s rich traditional dance display and songs which has thrilled audiences within and outside the boarders of this country as well as foreign dignitaries, Seramphetshane has participated in a number of local, national and international events in which it emerged victorious. “Eurocentric mentality has made our

people forget who they are and where they come from,” said Group Director, Lawrence Makganye.Asked what does the name of his group mean, Makganye explained: “Seramphetshane is a traditional shoe made up of cow skin hides used to be worn by our grandparents.”Still in Bojanala, driving far north of the district is Madikwe Township. Surrounded by remote villages Madikwe is home to Moremogolo traditional dance group.Moremogolo is also guided by an educator, commonly known as Tiro. The group, best respected for it’s exquisite costume made of 100% natural cow skin hide , won the 2003 North West Cultural Calabash best costume design award . Driving further north in the province, in the Bophirima district is Taung village. Taung, meaning “place of the lion” named after Kgosi Tau of the Bataung people is home to Mahube cultural group. The group made-up of in-school and out-of-school youth, performs unique styles of Tswana dances such as Borankana, Setapa, Phatisi and Tsutsubele. “The aim is to preserve and display the beauty of Setswana culture through the medium of dance and songs,” said group leader, Gabriel Sekgetho. With over 30- members, Mahube has also featured in several provincial events such as the North West Cultural Calabash and Zindala Zombili Traditional Dance Competition.Taung is also well-known for being home to the Taung World Heritage Site, where the fossilized child skull was discovered in 1924, and now with Mahube the village is without a doubt one of North West’s most stimulating tourism destination.Thirty minutes drive from the Town of Zeerust is the remote- rural village of Borakalalo. Borakalalo is home to Bana ba Kgwale traditional dance group. The group, made-up of mostly in-school youth, performs a unique style of dance with the aim of using their heritage to transform their lives and empower themselves. The group is under the guidance of multi-talented educator Moitasilo Boikanyo, who says he conducts his rehearsals after school and weekends.

The group, made up of 40 members, has also performed in several competitions including the Cultural Calabash. The North West province annual art festival,

North West Cultural Calabash held every September in Taung village provided a stage for these groups to display their skills and compete amongst themselves.

When Leseding News visited his home, he was busy in his garden and quickly pointed

out that he can never spend the whole day doing nothing.Every morning after having breakfast, Manganye makes his way to his garden where he immerses himself in his work. Manganye – who is also a traditional healer – is living with his two unemployed granddaughters and their children. He says his pension grant helps him to fend for himself while he also managed to get extra income from selling vegetables from his garden.“I am grateful to be alive at my age, it is by the grace of God and respecting other people,” he said, during an interview with Leseding News. “I am a very respectful person who fears God. I grew up at Thohoyandou in Limpopo and moved to Mmupudung around 1950 following my wife’s death,” he revealed. “I am very healthy and strong. I can do everything I want on my own. I can cook, make tea and bath myself. I live a happy life with my granddaughters, they love and

BAFANA JUMP SIX PLACES IN FIFA RANKINGS

The South African national football team – Bafana Bafana – are on the verge of breaking into the world’s top 50 after jumping six places in the latest FIFA World Rankings. The rankings – which were released by the football world governing body on Thursday – show a marked improvement by Bafana Bafana, who have qualified for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations. Shakes Mashaba’s boys, who jumped 10 places last month, have now moved to 51st in the world after their victory over Sudan to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and an away draw in Nigeria.Bafana, who were crowned continental champions in 1996, have also moved one spot in Africa to 11th position.“This is certainly a good development in our football,” former South African striker Phil Masinga told Leseding News. “Hopefully we can keep on going up the rankings but this will only happen if we continue winning out international matches. The higher we are ranked in the world and in Africa, the more seriously we will be taken by the other football teams,” added Masinga. “For the national team coach, the focus now should be on playing as many friendly matches as possible so that the players gel in and get used to each other ahead of the

Africa Cup of Nations. “This team has the potential to win the tournament but there is a lot of hard work that needs to be put in if we are to become the best team in Africa,” Masinga explained. Africa’s top country Algeria has slipped down three places in World Rankings from 15th to 18th, while the reigning world champions Germany remain the world’s top side.Guinea jumped more places than any other African country improving by a massive 17 spots to now being ranked 38th in the world, while Egypt, who failed to qualify for the 2015 Afcon dropped 22 places to 60th in the world.Local football supporters are optimistic that South Africa’s rise in the football rankings is the beginning of a better era that will hopefully mark Bafana Bafana’s domination in Africa. On Sunday, Bafana will begin the process of preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations when they play against Ivory Coast in the Nelson Mandela Challenge. Bafana Bafana coach Ephrain Mashaba has named a team made up of locally based players as he looks to widen his selection base. He will be using the match to begin his preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations as well as to have a look at some of the players he may include in his final squad.

As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.“Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected.”Earlier David Faktor, a spokesperson for St Vincent’s Hospital, had said Hughes was brought to the facility in a critical condition and had scans before undergoing surgery. The ball hit Hughes behind his left ear as he turned to try to hook the shot, Al Jazeera’s Rahul Pathak said, rupturing an artery.“This is an incredibly rare and horrible injury,” Pathak said.“There was a real sense that Hughes was on his way back to being at the top of his game, but that has very tragically been cut short.”

16 teams qualify for Afcon The 2015 African Cup of Nations finals was initially supposed to be held in Morocco but due to their fear of the escalating Ebola pandemic, the authorities in that country withdrew from hosting the event and Equatorial Guinea finally stepped in as the new host of one of Africa’s most prestigious events. The road to the finals was challenging, but encouraging - for the first time in many years Group A winner South Africa amassed 12 points after playing their final match 2-2 with Nigeria, while Congo finished second on 10 points after playing to a 1-0 win in Sudan. In Group B, dominant Algeria finished top with 15 points, with Mali in second place on nine. The group C winner Gabon ended unbeaten on 12 points, with Burkina Faso the runner-up on 11 points. Cameroon finished their campaign undefeated and was crowned Group D winner after playing a dull 0-0 draw with Ivory Coast, which finished 2nd on 10 points. Ghana topped the Group E pool with 11 points after a

3-1 victory over Togo in their final qualifier, while Guinea earned the second spot after defeating Uganda 2-0. In Group F, Cape Verde Islands and Zambia qualified with 12 and 11 points respectively, while in Group G, Tunisia on 14 and Senegal on 13 qualified - as Egypt were unable to get the results they needed to qualify as the 3rd-best-placed team. That honour went to DR Congo, which finished on 9 points in Cameroon and Ivory Coast’s Group D to complete the pool of 16 teams in Equatorial Guinea – who qualify as hosts next year. The draw for the tournament will be done on 3 December.

HARD WORK: Platinum Stars players hold a training session (PHOTO: FARIRAYI KAHWEMBA)

Besides Kaizer Chiefs, no other team has won the Telkom Knockout trophy on threeoccasions.Chiefs have won the title in 2007, 2009 and 2010 while Platinum Stars – who will be contesting this year’s fi nal against Supersport United on Saturday – won it in 2006 and 2013.If they manage to defeat SusperSport United, Platinum Stars will become only the second team in South Africa to win this prestigious cup competition on three occasions. It is against such a background of events that the team is gearing up to successfully defend thetitle they managed to win last year.Once again, Platinum Stars have shown their mettle going into the fi nal.

Wins over Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs on their way to reaching the fi nal have demonstrated that they have the ability to go all the way and write a piece of their own history in the tournament.Besides the glory that comes with winning the trophy, Platinum Stars are eager to fi nish the season with something to show for their efforts after they were already bundled out of the MTN8 Cup by Kaizer Chiefs. In an interview with Leseding News, Platinum Stars captain Vuyo Mere explained how important a victory on Saturday will be for the Rustenburg based side.“We have a lot of supporters and this is why we have to win something for them this season. Last season, we managed to win two cup competitions and this means that we have set a standard for ourselves,” Mere said.
