BiomesThe Plants and Animals of a region
Presentation by Nic Carlson
Ecological HierarchyBiosphere – Part of Earth that contains all life
Biomes – Areas that have plants and animals with common characteristics due to similar climates
Ecosystems – Community of interacting organisms with their physical environment
Community – Multiple populations of organisms that live together in an area
Population - Group of organism of same species that live in same area
Individual – Single living organism
Why would we expect to see similar plants and animals in similar climates?

How does latitude play a role in the Biomes on Earth?
ClimatePrecipitation and TemperatureTwo main factor that determine whether plants and animals can live in an area.
Why are precipitation and temperature important determining factors on what organisms can live in a certain area?
What kind of Biome do you think you live in?
Tropical Rainforest
• High Precipitation
• Warm Temperatures
• What plants and animals can be found here?
• What adaptations do they have that allows them to survive?
Savanna
• Moderate Precipitation
• Warm Temperatures
• What plants and animals can be found here?
• What adaptations do they have that allows them to survive?
Temperate Rain Forest
• High Precipitation
• Mild Temperatures
• What plants and animals can be found here?
• What adaptations do they have that allows them to survive?
Temperate Seasonal Forest
• Moderate Precipitation
• Mild Seasonal Temperatures
• What plants and animals can be found here?
• What adaptations do they have that allows them to survive?
Woodland/Shrubland
• Low Precipitation
• Mild Seasonal Temperatures
• What plants and animals can be found here?
• What adaptations do they have that allows them to survive?
Desert
• Very Low Precipitation
• High and Low Temperatures
• What plants and animals can be found here?
• What adaptations do they have that allows them to survive?
Boreal Forest
• Moderate Precipitation
• Low Temperatures
• What plants and animals can be found here?
• What adaptations do they have that allows them to survive?
Tundra
• Low Precipitation
• Freezing Temperatures
• What plants and animals can be found here?
• What adaptations do they have that allows them to survive?
Ecological Succession
• Observed process or change in an ecosystem over time
• Primary Succession – First change in a new ecosystem, this is usually to occurs on a new lava bed or glacier till.
• Secondary Succession – Any other change that disrupts the balance in an ecosystem. Some examples are, fires, floods, tornados, drought, avalanches, earthquakes, and human activity.
•How might human activity change different Biomes?
