THEMEThe main message of an author

Should provide a MESSAGE or MORAL about real life. This also makes it EASIER to connect to

your own life.

NEVER DIRECTLY STATED!!!

Usually, the lesson learned by the character(s) is the THEME of a story.

How can you find a Theme?

Page 16: Lesson 13 Notes “Escaping the Giant Wave”. Subject Pronouns & Antecedents Can take the place of ONE or MORE nouns as the SUBJECT of a sentence. Examples.

Finding THEME-O … Get it?

What are the most important CHARACTERISTICS of the main

character(s) at the beginning of the story? The end?

How has the character(s) changed? What actions did they take

to change?

Does the Setting create a challenge for the main characters?

A good reader will ask themselves certain questions to find the THEME of a story:

Why are the qualities of the characters important?

What do the characters learn as a result of their actions?

How is the setting important to the story?
