Metric Conversions(Linear)

Page 2: Lesson # 15

The best way to convert

Metric measurements…IsTo

Understand Them !

Page 3: Lesson # 15

For Example…

To convert 2 kilometers to millimeters…It would help if …

You understood how big each unit is!

Page 4: Lesson # 15

A kilometer…

Is a bit of a long walk,As a matter of a fact,

It is 1000 steps,If each step is 1 meter long!

Page 5: Lesson # 15

On the other hand…

A millimeter is quite small,About as long as

A pencil’s lead is thick. There are 10 of them in one centimeter,

And 1000 of them in One meter!

Page 6: Lesson # 15

Speaking of “centimeters”…

They are about as long as…Your fingernail is …wide.

And

There are 100 of them in a meter !

Page 7: Lesson # 15

So to convert metric measurements…Think about the units…

If you go from Bigger to Smaller…

you will have to multiply!

Page 8: Lesson # 15

But if you convert from Smaller to Bigger…

You will have to

Divide.

Page 9: Lesson # 15

Lets look at some examples…

Convert 23.4 cm to millimeters.

Page 10: Lesson # 15

23.4 cm = ? mm

23.4 X ? = ? mm

Page 11: Lesson # 15

Times by 10

(because there are 10 mm in 1 cm)Therefore

23.4 X 10 =

234 mm

Page 12: Lesson # 15

Another example…

Convert 0.25 m to kms.

Difficult ?

Watch…

Page 13: Lesson # 15

0.25 m = ? km

0.25 ÷ ? = ? Km

÷ by 1000 right

(Because there are 1000 m in 1 km)

Page 14: Lesson # 15

Soooooo…

0.25 must be divided by 1000

Which means…

0.25 m = 0.0025 km!

Yahoo.

Going from Smaller to Bigger…

Divide !÷

Page 16: Lesson # 15

Got it ?

Going from Bigger to Smaller

Multiply!
