This course was designed and written by the following contributors: Kary Vannice

In 2008, after deciding she wanted to take her life in another direction, and live outside her native country, Kary became certified as an ESL teacher. Having no previous English teaching experience, she researched the process online, took a TEFL certificate course and found an assignment teaching English at a private school in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Over the three school years Kary taught there she taught primary and secondary students from beginners to advanced learners. Although Kary now works as a freelancer, she continues to teach private English lessons to adults and children whenever possible. Kary’s background is not in English or even education, but in nearly every job she ever had, she found herself in the position of disseminating information in one-way or another. In many of her jobs she created her own educational materials, programs and curriculums. She has worked for government

agencies, private business and even owned her own education camp for kids. Kary is living proof that you don’t have to be a PhD or have classroom experience to succeed at teaching English abroad. Winton Churchill

Winton Churchill is the President and Founder of Barefoot Consultants, Inc. a company that specializes in helping people learn how to earn as they travel and work abroad. In 2007, he moved to Huatulco, Mexico and began teaching others how to put their skills on the global market. Mairéad Pratschke was born in Ireland and raised on the Irish-speaking west coast, as well as in Luxembourg and Germany, before immigrating to Canada as a teenager. Her passion for travel and other cultures grew with the revelation that language and culture are intertwined: She completed part of her undergraduate studies at the Univesity of Malaga, Spain and did her Master’s degree at the Catholic University of Leuven, in Belgium. Mairéad later taught for Berlitz, in Brussels, before returning to Canada in 1998, where she taught English to foreign post-graduate students at the University of Guelph and Global Awareness Through English (G.A.T.E.). After completing her doctorate in history, focusing on the role of language in identity, Mairéad taught at universities across Canada and in the U.S.

She has designed and taught courses in History, Film and European Studies, professional development courses in ICT (information and communications technology) for highschool teachers and education consultants. She currently works as a freelance writer and is always planning her next adventure. Dr. Bob Pesek

In 1975, he received a BA in Spanish from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1978, he completed the master's degree in TESOL from Indiana University and left shortly after, with his wife, Christine, for a position teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) at the University of Kerman in Iran. After finishing classes there, Bob returned to Ohio and taught English to international students at the University of Toledo and began doctoral studies in Higher Education. During this time, he also taught a TEFL methodology course for the University of Alabama in Bogota, Colombia. In 1986, with his Ph.D. in hand, Pesek was appointed director of the ESL program at Western Illinois University, traveling frequently to Japan, Korea, and throughout South America recruiting students for the program. In 1996, Pesek continued his international travel as Director of Operations for a private ESL teaching company based in Portland, Oregon. In 2000, he returned to the Midwest and took a position as ESL Program director at the University of

Northern Iowa. Pesek is currently retired and living in San Jose, Costa Rica, with his wife of 36 years.

INTRODUCTION Now  that  you  know  more  about  what  type  of  ESL  jobs  are  available  and  have  a  better  idea  of  which  might  suit  you,  you’re  not  going  to  have  to  consult  your  Magic  8  Ball  to  figure  out  which  certification  option  is  best  for  you.  You  are  fully  prepared  to  take  on  this  task.  There  are  many  options  for  how  you  can  obtain  your  certification  to  teach  English  as  a  foreign  language.      Really,  it  all  boils  down  to  what  you  want  to  do  and  where  you  want  to  do  it.  If  you  want  to  work  in  a  major  city  in  Europe,  you  can  expect  to  need  a  recognized  and  respected  form  of  certification;  if  you  want  to  work  in  a  tiny  village  in  Latin  America,  you  probably  have  more  flexibility.

Just  like  everything  else  in  this  process,  it’s  all  about  you  and  what

you  want.  So,  think  about  that  as  you  consider  the  options  below  –  and  then  register  for  the  program  that  works  for  you!    In  Part  1,  we’re  going  to  look  at  the  BIG  TWO,  the  top  two  ways  most  people  choose  to  certify.  Then  in  Part  2  we  will  look  at  the  other  5  options.  By  the  end  of  this  step  you  will  be  well  on  your  way  to  making  the  right  choice.   THE BASICS  Just what is a certification course?  A  certification  course  is  a  program  that  teaches  you  how  to  teach  English.  They  vary  in  length  of  time,  depending  on  what  job  you  are  aiming  for.

Some courses can be taken over the course of a few weekends and some last months. There are even university degrees now for Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

The cost will also vary from a few hundred dollars, for an online course, to thousands of dollars for more intensive courses.   What Will I learn?  If  the  thought  of  getting  your  certificate  to  teach  English  brings  back  flashbacks  of  mapping  sentences  in  middle  school,  not  to  worry.  Most  certification  courses  are  going  to  concentrate  on  teaching  you  how  to  teach.

What  you  will  learn:

Lesson  planning

Classroom  management

Analyzing  students’  needs

Teaching  listening,  speaking,  reading,  and  writing

Teaching  vocabulary

Teaching  pronunciation

Teaching  grammar  in  context

Using  classroom  aids  –  games,  music,  props,  etc

 Can I Fail?

Let’s  face  it,  a  lot  of  us  haven’t  taken  a  class  in  years…well,  okay,  maybe  decades!    So,  you  may  be  wondering,  “Can  I  fail  my  certification  course?”    The  short  answer  is  “yes”,  but  the  long  answer  is…    Very  few  people  fail,  and  those  that  do  don’t  put  in  the  required  effort  and  time  to

do  the  work  required  to  pass.  Almost  every  course  will  have  teachers  and  aids  to  help  you  every  step  of  the  way.    If  you  put  in  an  honest  effort,  and  take  the  course  seriously,  you  shouldn’t  have  any  problem  passing  the  course.

If you are nervous about taking the course, check out TEFL Bootcamp’s free course.

This  free  online  course  will  not  earn  you  a  certificate,  but  it  will  give  you  an  idea  of  what  a  paid  certification  course  will  entail  and  may  help  you  decide  if  teaching  English  is  for  you.  All  it  will  cost  you  is  a  little  of  your  time  and  energy.

Do I Have To?  Now  that  you  know  there  might  actually  be  school  involved,  you  may  be  thinking  “Do  I  have  to?”      The  answer...      “No!”      No,  you  don’t  have  to  have  a  certification  to  get  a  job  teaching  English.  There  are  thousands  of  people  around  the  world  earning  an  income  teaching  English  that  do  not  have  any  formal  training.    Listen to the audio interview with Steven Johnson to see how he succeeded in becoming an English teaching freelancing cowboy(as I like to call

him).

Depending  on  your  background,  previous  work  experience  and  knowledge  of  the  English  language  you  may  not  need  a  certificate.  Also,  the  country  you  want  to  teach  in  will  make  a  difference.        Then, Why Bother?  You  may  be  saying,  “Why  should  I  even  bother  to  certify  then?”

Well,  it  is  possible  to  earn  money  teaching  without  a  certificate,    but  it’s  not  always  easy.

A  TEFL  certificate  will  open  up  many  doors  of  opportunity  to  you,    and  not  having  certification  will  leave  other  doors  locked  up  tight.      There  will  be  no  entry  at  all!   CERTIFICATION ~ THE KEY  Just  like  a  key  ring  full  of  keys  that  go  to  a  myriad  of  different  doors,  you  are  tasked  with  discovering  which  ‘key’  will  to  open  the  ESL  door  you  are  interested  in.

Having  a  certificate  enables  you  to  demonstrate  your  ability  to  actually  teach,  as  opposed  to  just  speak,  read  and  write  in  English.      Nowadays,  simply  showing  up  and  introducing  yourself  as  a  native  speaker  is  not  always  going  to  cut  it  –  as  the  number  of  applicants  has  increased,  schools  the  world  over  have  become  a  lot  more  demanding  in  terms  of  certification  necessary  to  land  a  job.

While  you  may  get  a  job  teaching  English  without  certification,  it  might  not  be  as  good  as  the  person  who  has  gone  to  the  trouble  and  expense  of  obtaining  a  recognized  certificate  –  and  the  pay  probably  will  be  less  as  well,  so  it’s  in  your  best  interests  to  start  off  the  right  way.      If  you  put  in  the  necessary  resources  now  to  get  the  certification  you  need,  you  will  reap  the  rewards  in  the  form  of  a  secure  job  with  better  pay.    Interpreting the code  You’ll  see  your  chosen  field  referred  to  a  variety  of  ways,  depending  on  the  location.  ESL  just  means  English  as  a  Second  Language,  while  EFL  stands  for  English  as  a  Foreign  Language  –  this  is  just  a  geographic  difference  usually,  as  just  like  in  other  areas,  the  way  North  Americans  speak  English  tends  to  be  slightly  different  from  in  the  UK,  Ireland,  Australia  and  New  Zealand.

What you should look for:  For  our  purposes,  what  you’re  after  is  a  certification  in  any  of  TEFL/TESL/TESOL:  These  all  refer  to  recognized  qualification  to  Teach  English  as  a  Foreign/Second  Language.      Choices, choices…

There’s  a  wide  variety  of  ways  to  obtain  TEFL  certification  -‐  the  choice  is  really  up  to  you  and  will  be  determined  by  where  you  want  to  teach  and  what  sort  of  organization  you  want  to  work  for.  Here  are  some  of  the  main  categories  and  some  food  for  thought  on  each:    INTENSIVE “IN HOUSE” IN YOUR HOME COUNTRY

The  quickest  comprehensive  yet  thorough  option  is  to  register  for  an  intensive  training  course  through  a  certification  body  at  home.      This  option  is  usually  quite  labor-‐  and  time-‐intensive,  and  relatively  expensive,  but  the  reason  for  this  is  that  you  can  get  certified  at  home  at  a  time  that  works  for  you.

If  you’re  in  a  hurry  to  get  overseas  and  start  teaching,  rather  than  spending  anywhere  from  2  to  4  years  in  a  university  program,  completing  an  intensive  course  you  will  have  you  emerge  fully  trained  and  ready  to  go  a  lot  faster.    One  of  the  best  known  is  the  Oxford  Seminars,  which  are  offered  all  over  North  America.      How Long Will It Take?  Some  classes  (60  hour)  will  take  place  over  three  (3)  weekends  in  a  row,  for  a  full  day  on  both  days  from  9  a.m.  to  6  p.m.  Others  (120+  hour)  will  be  a  month  long  program  that  will  be  every  day.  That’s  right  -‐  this  is  why  it’s  called  “intensive”!    You  will  work  hard  and  it  will  be  a  lot  to  take  in  but,  you’ll  be  certified  within  a  month  and  ready  to  go.  Oxford  Seminars  also  offers  a  graduate  placement  service,  so  if  you  need  help  deciding  where  to  go,  this  all-‐in-‐one  approach  to  certification  and  placement  might  be  for  you.    The intensive “In House” in your own country could be a good choice for you if:

You have limited time to obtain certification

You have disposable income to pay up front for the course

You can devote three or four full weekends to getting it done quickly

INTENSIVE “IN HOUSE” ABROAD

Going  abroad  to  learn  to  teach  ESL  is  an  adventure  in  and  of  itself.  Perhaps  you’d  like  to  obtain  your  certification  from  an  institution  that  you  are  sure  will  be  recognized  in  the  country  where  you  intend  to  teach.      Or,  maybe  you  just  want  to  ease  into  the  new  culture  and  have  a  support  network  to  help  you  transition.        Either  way,  this  is  a  fantastic  way  to  learn  about  a  culture  while  getting  your  certificate,  even  if  it  is  not  in  the  country  you  want  to  teach  in.    Straight From Student to Teacher  Many  of  these  schools  offer  free  teacher  placement  after  you  get  your  certificate.  And,  because  many  of  them  operate  in  multiple  countries,  it’s  possible  to  train  in  one  country  and  then  be  placed  in  another.      You  may  also  find  that  even  though  you  didn’t  intend  to  stay  in  the  country  you  certified  in,  you  may  just  end  up  enjoying  it  there  and  you  can  go  straight  to  work  after  the  course.    Just  be  sure  you  do  your  research  first  –  not  only  are  you  planning  to  go  abroad  to  teach,  you  are  going  abroad  to  learn  how  to  teach  –  so  make  sure  you  make  an  informed  decision  before  you  pack  your  bags  and  enroll.    Researching  this  option  before  you  enroll  will  ensure  you  get  your  certification  from  a  school  that  will  open  doors  to  future  teaching  jobs  you  have  your  sites  on.    The intensive “In House” abroad option could be a good choice for you if:

You’d rather get to the location of your choice now than wait months

You’re certain that this country is where you want to teach

You’re not concerned about the applicability of your credentials at home

CONCLUSION Okay,  so  that  is  a  basic  run  down  of  what  you  will  learn  in  a  course,  and  two  of  the  major  options  you  have  for  obtaining  your  certificate.

If  you  were  wondering  what  certification  was  and  why  you  might  need  to  get  one,  I  hope  this  cleared  things  up  for  you.      If  the  thought  of  school  puts  you  on  edge,  there  are  lots  of  ways  to  prepare  for  the  course  to  ensure  you  pass  with  flying  colors.  And  then  there  is  always  the  option  to  forget  certification  all  together  and  strike  out  on  your  own  as  an  English  teaching  freelancing  cowboy,  like  Steven  and  Nicholas.    Either  way,  it  is  good  to  educate  yourself  about  options  for  certification,  and  we  are  not  done  yet…

In the next lesson we will open more doors to discover the rest of your certification

options.

Step  #3  Part  1  Assignment    1)  Use  Google  to  find  2  TEFL  certification  courses  in  your  home  country  that  would  be  options  for  you  to  attend,  either  close  to  home  or  in  a  city  you  might  enjoy  visiting.    Have  a  look  around  their  website  to  find  out  what  you  will  learn  in  their  course  and  what  the  costs  would  be.  Also  see  who  accredits  their  certificate.    2)  Think  of  a  country  you  might  like  to  work  in  and  see  if  there  are  a  few  certification  courses  offered  there.  Check  to  see  if  they  have  a  job  placement  option  in  that  country  or  other  countries  after  you  have  completed  your  certification.    3)  Listen  to  the  audio  interview  with  Steven  Johnson.  Be  sure  to  have  a  pen  and  paper  handy,  this

interview  is  full  of  information  on  how  to  make  a  living  teaching  English  without  any  experience  or  certification.     Best Wishes for Turning Your English Skills into a Paycheck,

Coming up next… Next week you will learn about many more options for certification. Some are right around the corner, others in far off lands and some are even virtual!
