SUMMARY - WHAT? WHY? WHEN? WHERE? HOW?

What? The Word of God. It cannot be explained in purely human terms because it holds things humans would never think of. It is Revelation. Revealed religion is different from the human constructions that are called religions. Even revealed religion must be interpreted, which calls for an authoritative oversight,

which God left us in the Church. The Roman Church determines the authentic books and promulgates the Bible as it is.Why? Mankind has lost his way. God has arranged for a two-way love-letter, a manual for successful, happy living, to guide the lost to a place where they can

be found. When? From oral roots several thousand years BC to about AD110. The final

canon authorized in AD360.Where? In many localities throughout the Near East: Palestine, Israel, Egypt,

Iraq, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Greece and Italy. How? See CCC 102,134,105, 702 ff.

JESUS, OUR TEACHER

We will spend the rest of our lives living with His teaching, pondering it and taking it into our lives.

His teachings were often couched in parable. Let us look at these parables:The parable of the sower, which, as we have seen, is really a parable about soils. Matthew. 13 Parable of Weeds and Wheat Matt.13:24 Parable of Yeast Matt.13 Parables of the Kingdom Matt. 13 Teachings on sin and forgiveness:Causing sin Matt.18: 6 Lost sheep How to take care of offenses Parable of unforgiving Servant The unforgivable sin. Matt. 12:31 Teaching God’s love and compassion by healing sufferers and sinnersCenturion’s servant Matt.8:5 Jairus’ daughter Matt. 9:18 Teaching how to live in this world with detachment Living free from anxiety Matt. 6Living without burden of things. Treasure in heavenTeaching of the last things - Apocalyptic Eschatology: The Fall of Jerusalem and the Temple Matt. 28Other teachings of Jesus that pertain to the Church and its precepts will be coming

in future lessons.

JESUS, OUR BRIDEGROOM

A LESSON DEMANDING FINE DISTINCTIONSThis lesson demands careful thinking, and fine distinctions, because it seems to be about sex, but it only begins and does not end there.

Purpose :1) to prepare each individual to receive the Bridegroom as his/her personal lover in each of the sacraments of the Church. Abiding in Jesus JN 15:5!; Jesus present to us. Jesus waiting for us to open ourselves to receive the Holy Spirit that we bear much fruit.

2) to present the importance of marriage, faithful through life, as a sign of our eventual eternal union with God, the image of the Holy Trinity on earth. Failures in this relationship? Recourse to examination in Annulment, and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

3) to present the meaning of male and female in God’s plan for happy fulfillment in this life. The Church’s dependence on male headship. Headship and submission in the family as holy order.

4) to present the Eucharist as fulfillment of divine union on this earth, a taste of what is to come. JN 6:56

5) to bring understanding that we are one member of the Body of Christ, the Church, and together with that Body are collectively His Beloved. JN 17:22

6) to prepare for and expect that fruitfulness that will come from our union with Jesus by the Holy Spirit. It will be by God knowing us, intimate union, that we bear fruit. MT 7:20 Works are not fruits. 7:22 Fruits are from the inner man – Galatians 5:22

It is fitting then, that we should find the Virgin Mary obedient in saying, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to Thy word!” Eve was disobedient while she was still a virgin. She having Adam as her husband, but herself still a virgin…was disobedient, and brought death upon herself and the whole human race.Similarly, Mary, bearing the predestined man, yet still being a virgin, was obedient and so became the cause of salvation both for herself and for the whole human race…For this reason the Lord said that the first shall be last and the last first…Thus the knot formed by Eve’s disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary. What the Virgin Eve tied through her unbelief, the Virgin Mary untied through faith.

SCRIPTURAL MARY The Church’s Marian belief, The next page holds the Bible references according to number.

• MARY IN OUR LIFE:MARY IN THE CHURCH• We will try here to bring together from Scripture what the Church understands to be the role of Mary in Salvation History, and why we honor her. This

is a very tall order. When I use “we” in the following, I mean the Catholic Church.• 1.We believe Mary to be the Mother of all Christians as Eve is the Mother of humanity.• 2.We believe that what Eve lost by disobedience, Mary by obedience restored.• 3.Satan made Eve his slave; Mary in humble obedience was the agent for his defeat, releasing Eve as well.• 4.We believe that Mary was conceived without sin. Therefore, as she announced to St. Bernadette, she is the Immaculate Conception.• 5.We believe that she, too needed a Redeemer, and that the merits of Jesus were applied to her before she was conceived.• 6.We believe that Mary exercised her free will to be obedient when tested. And that she never sinned.• 7.We believe that Mary conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit and was a virgin when He was conceived.• 8.We believe that Mary was a virgin all her life.• 9.We believe that both Mary and Joseph had determined to live a celibate life for God.• 10.We believe that the other children in her life were not her natural children.• 11.We believe that Mary or a source close to her is responsible for the first chapters of Luke, and that she directly inspired much of the

Gospel of John.• 12.We believe that when Mary was given to John at the cross as his mother, she was given to all mankind as Mother.• 13.We believe that when Mary was called “Woman” by Jesus it had significance for all women going back to Eve.• 14.Because Mary is the complete, perfect woman, she is the model for all the faithful who are to be the Bride of Christ.• 15.When John took Mary into his home therefore, all of the faithful are to take Mary into their home — their intimate lives, where they live.• 16.We believe that Mary was the fulfillment of the foreshadowing of her role that is discerned in the Old Testament women.• 17.We believe her hiddenness is deliberate.• 18.We believe that she is the first Christian.• 19.We believe that she exemplified all that Jesus taught.• 20.We believe that she is the co-redemptoress.• 21.We believe that she is a powerful intercessor and stands at the right hand of the Holy Trinity.• 22. We believe that she now has the dominion that was first given to Eve. We believe that she is wholly human, but has been given

divinity, but not Godhead She is not God. She has simply- attained what all Christians will attain when they are perfected.• 23.We believe that Mary fully understood Salvation History and the role she would play in the Incarnation.• 24.We believe that Mary shared fully in the mission of her Son and exemplified all He came to image and require of His followers.• 25.We believe Mary is the Ark of the Covenant for the New Israel.• 26.Reaction to Mary separates - the threshing floor — that the thoughts of many hearts would be revealed.• 27.Mary had a will freely flowing with God’s will, and was supported by an intelligent understanding when she agreed to be the Mother of

God. She has grasped the significance of the Old Testament -in a manner of the studious Jewish scholars.• 28.Mary became obedient to Joseph, all of her direct angelic visits ended after her marriage. Headship was apparent in the Holy Family.

She was dependent on him for leadership -and judgment.• 29.Mary fulfilled all the duties of a woman of Israel — was wholly obedient to the Jewish Law and Temple expectations.• 30.Full of Grace, Mary was open to more grace and was present for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. • 31.Before He assumed His mission, Mary’s intuition often guided the young Jesus.

EXCERPTS FROM THE WRITING OF JUSTIN MARTYR, AD 120• . . . .And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together

to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits; then, when the reader has ceased, the president verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things. But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Saviour on the same day rose from the dead. Having ended the prayers, we salute one another with a kiss. There is then brought to the president of the brethren bread and a cup of wine mixed with water; and he taking them, gives praise and glory to the Father of the universe, through the name of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, and offers thanks at considerable length for our being counted worthy to receive these things at His hands. And when he has concluded the prayers and thanksgivings, all the people present express their assent by saying Amen. This word Amen answers in the Hebrew language to genoito [so be it]. And when the president has given thanks, and all the people have expressed their assent, those who are called by us deacons give to each of those present to partake of the bread and wine mixed with water over which the thanksgiving was pronounced, and to those who are absent they carry away a portion. . . . . . And this food is called among us Eukaristia [the Eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the man who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been washed with the washing that is for the remission of sins, and unto regeneration, and who is so living as Christ has enjoined. For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh. For the apostles, in the memoirs composed by them, which are called Gospels, have thus delivered unto us what was enjoined upon them; that Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, said, "This do ye in remembrance of Me, this is My body;" and that, after the same manner, having taken the cup and given thanks, He said, "This is My blood;" and gave it to them alone.
