Check Hardware Requirements

The minimum requirements for installing Windows XP

Professional include:

An Intel Pentium/Celeron family or AMD K6/Athalon/Duron

family 233 MHz processor.

64 MB of RAM.

At least one hard disk where the systemroot (usually C:\

WINNT) can be located on a partition.

At least 1.5 GB of hard disk space.

Page 6: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Check Hardware Requirements

The recommended requirements for installing Windows XP

Professional include:

A PC with a 300 MHz (single or dual) processor.

128 MB of RAM.

Page 7: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Check Hardware Compatibility

The Windows XP Professional installation CD, running on an

upgradeable Windows version, includes options to check for

system compatibility.

It is essential that the service packs for Windows NT 4.0

Workstation or Windows 2000 Professional are installed, if

XP is upgraded from either of these operating systems.

Check Hardware Compatibility

Automatic compatibility check:

The ‘Check My System Automatically’ option verifies the

system and provides users with a list of incompatible items.

It also provides alternative remedies for correcting

incompatibility problems.

Page 11: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Check Hardware Compatibility

Compatibility check using Web site:

The Microsoft Web site provides users with a Hardware

Compatibility List (HCL) for the system.

It is essential to check all the hardware in the system prior to

installing Windows XP Professional.

Page 12: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Check Hardware Configuration

Microsoft recommends a CD-ROM or DVD drive for

installations.

A super VGA display adapter that supports an 800x600

resolution, and the most recent version of the workstation

operating system software is also required.

Page 13: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Microsoft also recommends a mouse or any other pointing

device.

A high-density 3-½ inch floppy drive is required if floppy

disks are used for installation.

Check Hardware Configuration

Page 14: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Test Workstation Hardware

The DOS FDISK command is used to rebuild the hard disk

drive prior to the installation.

The hard disk can be re-built while installing Windows XP

from the CD.

Page 15: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Installing Windows XP Professional

Windows XP can be installed over a network using either a

shared network drive or a set of bootable floppy disks.

A set of six boot setup disks can be created to perform the

Windows XP installation startup.

Check Hardware Compatibility

The minimum requirements for installing the latest Novell

Client for NT/2000/XP software include:

Windows NT 4.0 or higher operating system with service

pack 3 or later installed.

At least 24 MB of RAM.

Page 26: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Check and Test Client Hardware and Configuration

Ensure that Novell 6 server is connected to the network and

is functioning properly.

The Windows workstation must be updated with available

updates, such as service packs, prior to installing the Novell

Client software.

Page 27: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Installing Novell Client

The setupnw.exe file, located in the Novell Client folder, is

required to start the installation.

The default installation option must be set to Typical

installation.

The Ctrl-Alt-Delete key combination is used to initiate the

Novell Client for Windows login.

Check Hardware Compatibility

The minimum requirements for installing Red Hat Linux

workstation include:

A Pentium 200 MHz processor.

32 MB of RAM for text-mode installation.

64 MB of RAM for graphical-mode installation.

Page 36: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Check Hardware Compatibility

The minimum requirements for installing Red Hat Linux

workstation include (continued):

650 MB of hard disk space or 4.5 GB of available hard disk

space for a complete installation.

Additional space for any files to be stored on the server.

Page 37: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Check Hardware Configuration

Red Hat recommends the use of a bootable CD-ROM drive

for all installations of the software.

A high-density 3-½ inch floppy drive is required if the CD is

not bootable.

Page 38: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Information about the monitor, display adapter, and the

most recent version of the network operating system that

the user plans to install is also required.

A mouse is required for graphical installations.

Check Hardware Configuration

Page 39: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Test Workstation Hardware

In order to test the workstation’s hardware, it is essential to

rebuild the existing hard disk drive and start a fresh

installation.

The Linux bootable CD wipes the existing hard drive and

builds new partitions during the installation.

Page 40: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Installing Linux 7.3 Workstation

A CD-ROM based installation:

Erases everything on the workstation’s disk drives and

reformats them.

Configures the server to use the IP.

Creates a new Red Hat Linux workstation.

Page 41: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Installing Linux 7.3 Workstation

The following items are required to perform the installation:

Computer with a hard disk drive that can be totally erased.

Red Hat Linux’s operating system software.

Bootable floppy disks that are created using boot.img found in

the Images directory in the Red Hat Linux operating system

CD-ROM.

Page 42: Lesson 5-Accessing Networks

Summary

Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home are the two

versions of Windows XP.

Upgrades from Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Windows 2000

Professional systems require service packs to be installed in

them.

Before performing any installation, care should be taken to

ensure that the hardware meets the program requirements,

operates properly, and includes all the necessary drivers.
