Introduce the Lesson

Say: Last week and over the next few weeks, we’re learning about the fruit of the

Spirit.. Last week we added “kindness fruits” to our tree because we learned about

kindness.

Say: This week we’ll learn that goodness is a fruit of the Spirit. Show the kids the

picture of the large tree with BIG roots.

Say: Today we’ll find out that being friends with God helps us be good to others. Since

God helps you show goodness to others.

Share

Say: Let’s think about some people we probably see a lot who we could be good to—

our neighbors. Share about one of your neighbors who you can be good to.

Have a few kids share with the whole group.

Summarize

Open a Bible, and say: We’ll learn more about who Jesus says our

neighbors are as we listen to the Bible. And we’ll hear about a man who was a

good neighbor. Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit, and when we’re friends with God,

God helps us be good neighbors.

Pray, thanking God that goodness is a fruit of the Spirit and that God helps us

be good to others.

Dig In to the Bible

Read: Galatians 5:22

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our

lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness,

and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Luke 10:30-37

30 Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to

Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up,

and left him half dead beside the road.

31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to

the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple assistant[a]walked over and

looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. 33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt

compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive

oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took

him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two

silver coins,[b] telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay

you the next time I’m here.’

36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was

attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. 37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”

Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

In This Passage: Jesus tells a story known today as the parable of the good Samaritan.

In it, he shares about a man who showed goodness by stopping to help an injured man,

even when the religious leaders wouldn’t stop to help.

Bible Point: Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit.

Summary Verse: “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love,

joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-

control. There is no law against these things!” (Galatians 5:22-23).

Discuss and Watch “A Good Guy”

Say: We’re learning that goodness is a fruit of the Spirit. In our Bible story,

Jesus told about a guy who showed goodness. Let’s see what happened from the

point of view of the guy who received the goodness.

Ask: • How did it change your perspective to hear the story from the

victim’s view?

• What do you think of the priest and the temple assistant who walked right

on by?

• When have you needed someone to show you goodness? What

happened?

• How was your story like what happened to the man who was robbed and

beaten? How is it different?

Say: In Jesus’ story, an unexpected person was the one to show

goodness. We all have times we need someone to show us goodness, and we can

be on the lookout for people who need us to show them God’s goodness.

Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit.

CORE BIBLE DISCOVERY [20 min]

Fruit of the Spirit: Goodness (Galatians 5:22; Luke 10:30-37)

4 different stuffed animals, dolls, or toy figures

Easy Prep

Hang each page of the “Show Goodness” handout in your room, spacing the pages throughout

the room.

Listen and Respond

Have kids sit in a circle. Say: Today we’ll find out that goodness is a fruit of

the Spirit. That means when we’re friends with God, he helps us be good

neighbors to one another. Let’s dig in to that.

Show the Bible. Say: The Bible says Jesus was teaching one day and he

said, “God says to love your neighbor.” One man in the crowd asked Jesus,

“Who is my neighbor?” And Jesus answered the man by telling a story. I’ll need

you to help tell Jesus’ story. Jesus told the people that a man was traveling from

one city to another. Show one of the toys, and pretend that it’s walking. Lead kids to

pass the toy around the circle, pretending to make it walk, until it gets back to you.

Say: Along the way, the man met some robbers who took all his money

and hurt him. He was so hurt that he looked like he was almost dead! Lay the toy

in the center of the circle.

Say: After that, a church leader came down the road and saw the hurt man.

Hold up the second toy, and make it move toward the “hurt” toy, but not too close.

Ask: • What do you think the church leader did?

Say: The Bible says the church leader went to the other side of the street

and left the hurt man lying there. Lead kids to pass around that toy behind their backs

to show that the church leader stayed away from the hurt man. Set that toy aside.

Say: Then another man came walking down the street. Hold up the third toy,

and make it move toward the hurt toy, but not too close. He was part of a group called

the Levites. The Levites were friends with the hurt man.

Ask: • What do you think the Levite did when he saw the hurt man?

Say: The Bible says the Levite also crossed the street, away from the man,

and kept going. He didn’t help the hurt man, either. Lead kids to pass around the toy

behind their backs. Set that toy aside when it gets back to you.

Say: There was a third man who came down the street. Hold up the fourth

toy, and make it move toward the hurt toy, but not too close. This man was part of a

group called the Samaritans. The Samaritans often weren’t friendly to the hurt

man and his friends.

Ask: • What do you think the Samaritan did?

Say: The Bible says the Samaritan stopped and helped the hurt man! He

cleaned up his wounds, and he took the hurt man to a hotel. The Samaritan even

paid for the hurt man to stay at the hotel. Place the fourth toy next to the hurt toy.

Say: And that was the end of Jesus’ story. Jesus asked the people

listening to his story, “Which one of these men acted like a good neighbor?”

What do you think? Invite kids to answer Jesus’ question.

Say: Jesus said the good neighbor was the Samaritan man who stopped

and helped. Then Jesus told the people to go and show goodness to others like

the Samaritan man did.

Go on a Goodness Hunt

Say: Let’s practice what Jesus said. We can show goodness and be good

neighbors to others. Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit. That means when we’re

friends with God, he’ll help us show goodness like the Samaritan did in the story.

Let’s look for people we can be good neighbors to.

Invite kids to browse the pictures you hung ahead of time and then choose one.

Have kids discuss as many ways as they can think of that they could help the person in

need. Here are some ideas for showing goodness to each person.

Hurt child on the playground: Kids might help the child get up or put a bandage on the child.

Lonely child with no one to play with: Kids might invite the child to play.

Hungry child with no food: Kids might share their own food.

Lost and scared child: Kids might find an adult in charge or help the child look for her parents.

Say: You can practice being good neighbors by looking for people who

need help and by doing something like the Samaritan did. You can show

goodness to your friends, families, and neighbors. Goodness is a fruit of the

Spirit, so God will help you find people who need help, and he’ll help you know

what to do to show goodness to them!

DEEPER BIBLE [15 min]

To Help or Not

Easy Prep

Ask an adult or teen to choose not to help in the final scenario with the pushing child. Have the

helper wait until all the kids have chosen so they don’t all follow the helper.

Decide Whether to Help

Say: Today we’re learning that goodness is a fruit of the Spirit. Sometimes

it’s hard to be good neighbors. That’s why we need God to put his goodness in

our hearts. In Jesus’ story, there were some people who didn’t want to help the

hurt man. Let’s play a game and decide whether we want to help.

Stand in the middle of the room facing one wall. Have kids and at least one adult

or teen line up on both sides of you so you’re all facing the same wall.

Say: First, let’s think about our families, who we love so much. If someone

in your family fell and hurt a knee, would you want to help? If you would want to

help, take three giant hops forward. If you would not want to help, take three giant

hops backward. Encourage kids to hop one way or the other.

Say: It’s pretty easy to help someone we love and who’s nice to us.

Everyone hop back to me, and let’s think about someone else. Bring kids back to

the original line.

Say: Think of one of your favorite friends. Is your friend nice to play with?

Show me with your thumbs. Encourage kids to give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down.

Say: If your friend fell and needed help, would you want to help? Take

three hops forward for yes or three hops back for no. Give kids a chance to move

forward or backward.

Have kids return to the original line. Say: Think of someone who isn’t always

a good friend to you. Pause. If that person fell and got hurt, would you want to

help? Encourage kids to hop forward or backward.

Have kids return to the original line. Say: What if someone pushed you down

on the playground? If that person fell and scraped a knee, would you want to

help? Encourage kids to move forward or backward. The adult or teen will wait until the

children make their choices and then move backward for this scenario. Invite your teen

to share that it can be hard to help someone who isn’t nice to you. If some kids moved

backward, allow them to share why they did.

Talk About It

Say: It’s hard to be good and kind to people who aren’t kind to us.

Sometimes we want to be unkind right back.

Share about someone who has been unkind to you without naming names and

how you responded. Someone may have cut you off in traffic and you honked at that

person, or someone may have yelled at you so you yelled back.

Ask: • Tell about a time someone wasn’t good or kind to you. Tell kids to

share without naming names. Kids may say someone said something unkind to them, a

friend took a toy from them, or a sibling hit them. Encourage kids to share if they

responded by being kind or unkind.

Say: Today we heard about a Samaritan man who was a good neighbor

even though the hurt man and his friends weren’t normally very nice to him. The

Bible says God loves when we’re good neighbors, even to people who aren’t kind

to us. Read Matthew 5:44 aloud. The good news is God helps us! Goodness is a

fruit of the Spirit.

Ensure your “Show Goodness” pictures from the Core Bible Discovery activity are still hanging

around your room.

Look

Say: Today we learned that goodness is a fruit of the Spirit. We heard

Jesus’ story about a good neighbor, and we practiced being good neighbors to

some people who needed help. Point to the pictures hanging around the room.

Say: Let’s visit each person and pray for people who need help in the same

way. Lead kids to the child on the playground who is hurt. We can be good to friends

who get hurt on the playground or anywhere else. Let’s pray that God would help

us be good neighbors and help the hurt people feel better. Lead kids in a brief

prayer. Invite kids to mention any people they know who are sick or injured.

Lead kids to the lonely child. Say: We can be good friends to people who are

lonely. Let’s pray that God would help us notice and be good neighbors to lonely

people. Lead kids in a brief prayer. Invite kids to mention any people they know who

are lonely.

Lead kids to the hungry child. Say: We can be good friends to people who are

hungry. Let’s pray that God would help us be good sharers to neighbors who are

hungry. We can also ask God to take care of these neighbors so they always have

enough to eat. Lead kids in a brief prayer. Invite kids to mention any people they know

who need more food at home.

Lead kids to the lost child. Say: We can be good friends to people who are

lost or scared. Let’s ask God to help us know what to do when we meet someone

who is lost or scared. Lead kids in a brief prayer. Invite kids to mention anyone who is

scared or possibly lost.

Pray

Say: Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit, so when we’re friends with God, he’ll

help us be good neighbors. We want to be good neighbors!

Share about someone you can be a good neighbor to today.

Ask: • Tell about someone you can be a good neighbor to today.

Lead kids in a prayer for the people kids shared about.

Say: Thanks for coming to church, and please come back and visit all your

friends here again soon!
