A certain rich (Lk 18:23) young (Mt. 19:20) ruler (Lk 18: 18) came out running (Mk 10:17) to Jesus and fell on his knees before Him (Mk 10:17)

Jesus and the Rich Young Ruler(Matthew 19:16-22; Mark 10:17-22; Luke 18:18-

23)

A certain rich young ruler came out running to Jesus and fell on his knees before Him (Worship and Respect) “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have

eternal life?”Why do you call Me good? If you would enter

eternal life, keep the commandments. Which one?

The young man definitely thinks there is *one good thing*This I have done from my youth, what do I lack?

Jesus looking at him loved him Go…. Sell…. Give…… and you will have treasure in heaven Come…Take up your cross… Follow me

Jesus and the Rich Young Ruler(Matthew 19:16-22; Mark 10:17-22; Luke 18:18-

23)

When the rich young ruler heard …. his countenance fell (ASV) he went away exceedingly sorrowfully because he was very rich (great possessions)

I am amazed as I think about how much time the gospel spends on our management of riches. Riches aren’t bad, but we have had several lessons

(ex. unjust steward) about the management (use) of these riches.

With God the Impossible is Possible (Matthew 19:23-30; Mark 10:23-31; Luke

18:24-30)

Jesus says, “How hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!”

The apostles were astonished at his words. Children, how hard it is for those who trust in

riches to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a

needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

Being greatly astonished they said, “Who then can be saved?” With men it is impossible, but not with God; for

with God all things are possible.

Page 6: LESSON 8 JESUS AND THE RICH YOUNG RULER HARD FOR A RICH MAN TO ENTER HEAVEN PARABLE OF THE LANDOWNER AND WAGES JESUS TELLS OF HIS DEATH/RESURRECTION.

With God the Impossible is Possible (Matthew 19:23-30; Mark 10:23-31; Luke

18:24-30)

Peter exclaims, “See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore, what shall we have?” Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when

the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Matthew only)

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold (in this age), and inherit eternal life (in the age to come).

But many who are first will be last, and the last first. This will be explained in the next parable.

How is this fulfilled?

Parable of the Landowner and Wages(Matthew 20:1-16)

For the kingdom of heaven is like …. a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire

laborers for his vineyardNow when he had agreed with the laborers for a

denarius a day He sent them to work in the field Third hour … “Go into the vineyard and what is right I will give

you. Sixth hour … “Go into the vineyard and what is right I will give

you. Ninth hour … “Go into the vineyard and what is right I will give

you.Eleventh hour … “Go into the vineyard and what is

right I will give you. One hour to go and he finds some standing around in the market

place Why aren’t you working …. No one has hired us

Page 9: LESSON 8 JESUS AND THE RICH YOUNG RULER HARD FOR A RICH MAN TO ENTER HEAVEN PARABLE OF THE LANDOWNER AND WAGES JESUS TELLS OF HIS DEATH/RESURRECTION.

Parable of the Landowner and Wages(Matthew 20:1-16)

At evening, the landowner told his manager (Steward) to call them in for their wages “Beginning with the last”

He gave the ones who had come at the eleventh hour a denarius

When the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; When they received a denarius, they complained against the landowner These last men have worked only one hour and you made them equal

to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day. Friend, I am doing you no wrong.

Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you.

Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your (attitude) eye evil because I am good?'

So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.

Jesus foretells His Death/Resurrection(Matthew 20:17-19; Mark 10:32-34; Luke 18:31-

34)

Jesus led the way up to Jerusalem The disciples were amazed and afraid

Then Jesus took them to the side and began to tell them all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished The Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to

the scribes They will condemn Him to death They will deliver Him to the Gentiles They will mock Him, scourge Him, spit on Him, and kill Him.

And the third day He will rise again. The apostles understood none of these things; this

saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things which were spoken.

James and John seek to be the Greatest

(Matthew 20:20-28; Mark 10:35-43)

The mother (Zebedee’s wife), James and John comes to Jesus They kneel down to Jesus wanting to ask a question

Jesus said, “What is your wish?”James and John’s mother:

Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom."

Jesus: You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup

that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

James and John: “We are able”Jesus:

You will indeed drink My cup, and You will be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; But to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, It is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.

James and John seek to be the Greatest

(Matthew 20:20-28; Mark 10:35-43)

When the ten heard it, they were very upset with James and John

The Gentiles love to lord over others. It will not be this way among you If one desires to be great, he must be a servant of all If one desires to be first, let him be your slave

Just as Jesus didn’t come to be served but to serve He came to give his life a ransom for many

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men (Matthew 20:29-34; Mark 10:46-52; Luke 18:35-

43)

As Jesus was leaving Jericho, with his disciples and a great multitude Bartimaeus and his friend were sitting by the road

begging.

When Bartimaeus heard the multitude he ask what was going on? (Mark) The people told him it was Jesus coming. Then they cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on

us!”

The people warned them they should be quite They cried out all the more Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!

Page 15: LESSON 8 JESUS AND THE RICH YOUNG RULER HARD FOR A RICH MAN TO ENTER HEAVEN PARABLE OF THE LANDOWNER AND WAGES JESUS TELLS OF HIS DEATH/RESURRECTION.

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men (Matthew 20:29-34; Mark 10:46-52; Luke 18:35-

43)

Jesus command them to be brought to him Then those same people began to say, Be of good cheer and

rise because He is calling you They threw aside their garments and came to Jesus

Jesus asks, “What do you want Me to do for you?” Lord, that our eyes be opened

So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. “Receive your sight (Mark says “Go your way”); your

faith has made you well”And immediately their eyes received sight,

They followed Him. Glorifying GodWhen the people saw it they also glorified God.

Jesus Comes to Zaccheaus House(Luke 19:1-10)

Zaccheaus wanted to see Jesus more than he cared about appearances

Why is he hated by the Jews?

He was a man of character

What is the significance of the following statement? “Today salvation has come to this house, because he

also is a son of Abraham;”

Page 18: LESSON 8 JESUS AND THE RICH YOUNG RULER HARD FOR A RICH MAN TO ENTER HEAVEN PARABLE OF THE LANDOWNER AND WAGES JESUS TELLS OF HIS DEATH/RESURRECTION.

Parable of the Minas(Luke 19:11-27)

What was the reason for this parable? (v. 11)Nobleman went to receive a kingdom

Calls ten of his servants and gives them each 10 minas Do business till I come Citizens hated him and said, “We will not have this man to reign

over us”Nobleman returns to learn how much every man had

gained by trading.  Your mina became ten minas (Well done, you have been faithful

in a little, have authority over 10 cities) Your mina became five minas (You have authority over 5 cities) Master, here is your mina, which I have kept put away in a

handkerchief. (Take the mina from him and give it to the one who had 10)

Bring here those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, and slay them before me.
