The rubric “Participation in Discussion” should be used to assess student work in class discussions when no specific text is provided; students offer ideas, concerns, and questions based on their personal experiences with and on the subject topic. The rubric “Participation in Discussion of Specific Text” should be used to assess student work in class discussions based on text. “Text” refers to articles, essays, videos, works of art, pieces of music, speeches, etc. that intend to elicit a response or feeling and can be discussed using subject appropriate vocabulary. Art and music rubrics are designed to assess student created visual art and music projects (posters, sculptures, song lyrics, etc.) that are integrated with social and emotional learning lessons. Introduction:Thefiverubricsprovidedcanbeusedaswrittenand/oradaptedtoassessstudentworkcompletedaspartofanSELlesson.

Therubric“ParticipationinDiscussion”shouldbeusedtoassessstudentworkinclassdiscussionswhennospecifictextisprovided;studentsofferideas,concerns,andquestionsbasedontheirpersonalexperienceswithandonthesubjecttopic.

Therubric“ParticipationinDiscussionofSpecificText”shouldbeusedtoassessstudentworkinclassdiscussionsbasedontext.“Text”referstoarticles,essays,videos,worksofart,piecesofmusic,speeches,etc.thatintendtoelicitaresponseorfeelingandcanbediscussedusingsubjectappropriatevocabulary.
