Atom Stacker

LESSON 4

Purpose: This activity will reinforce the theme of the series and will engage the children’s attention as they enter the room.

Description: One child will hold a stack of six plastic cups while another child holds a cup filled with atoms (ping pong balls). The child with the cup of atoms will pass a ping pong ball to their teammate who will then bounce the ping pong ball off of the ground and try to catch it in his or her stack of cups. Once the atoms lands in the top cup, the child will move the cup with the ping pong ball to the bottom of the stack. Eventually, the stack will become wobbly. Whichever team gets an atom in all of their cups first, is the winner.

Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, three plastic cups filled with ping pong balls, at least eighteen plastic cups, in stacks of six, and the Opening Activity media elements from the Lesson 4 MediaShout® or ProPresenter® File.

Note: Play the Doors Open Music when the children begin to enter the room.

To introduce this activity, say the following:

1. Let’s get started!2. This activity is called Atom Stacker. 3. We are going to have two volunteers from each team come up on stage.4. One of you will hold a cup that is filled with atoms (also known as ping pong

balls) and the other will hold a stack of six cups without atoms. 5. If you are holding the cup with atoms, it is your job to hand the atoms, one at a

time, to your teammate with the stack of cups.6. If you are holding the stack of cups without atoms, it is your job to take the atom

from your teammate, bounce the atom off of the ground, then catch the atom in the cup that is at the top of your stack.

7. Once you catch an atom, move the top cup to the bottom of the stack and continue until you have an atom in every cup.

8. As the stack gets taller, it will be more difficult to catch the atoms.9. The first team to get an atom in every cup of their stack will be the winner.

Note: Choose two volunteers from each team. One to hold the stack of cups and the other to hand off the atoms. Once the round is complete, choose two more volunteers from each team, and play again.

For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Teacher/Co-Teacher Training Video.

During the activity, say the following:

1. Are you ready? Kids, are you ready to cheer for your teammates? Okay!2. Ready, Set, Go!

Note: Play the Game Go Music.

3. Keep going!4. Kids, keep cheering.5. Great job!

Purpose: This activity will help the children learn that no matter where we are, we can always pray, because God is always with us.

Description: The children will toss a bean bag toward pictures of places that they regularly go in their life. Whatever place the bean bag lands nearest to, they will think of what they can talk to God about in that situation and pray a prayer.

Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, a bean bag, and the “Bean Bag Pictures” from the Lesson Materials Folder.

Note: Several pictures are provided in the lesson folder, however it may be more fun for your kids if you use pictures from your town that are familiar to them.

To introduce this activity, say the following: 1. Today we are learning that we can always talk to God, because He is always with us. 2. All these pictures are places that you might go or things you might be doing. 3. We can talk to God in any of these places or situations, because God is with

us everywhere.

For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Training Video.

During the activity, say the following: 1. Here, toss this bean bag toward these pictures. 2. Good toss! 3. What is this picture? 4. Is God with us here?

5. What can we talk to God about here? 6. That’s a great thing to talk to God about. Let’s do it right now.

Note: You may need to help the kids with suggestions of things they can talk to God about in each situation. Continue until you have hit all the locations.

After the activity, say the following: 1. Today we looked at a lot of different places. What was the common theme in all of those places? (God was there in all of them. God is everywhere.) 2. All of these places and activities are opportunities to talk to God.

Summary: You tossed the bean bag today on a few places where you could pray. Today we will learn that because God is everywhere, you can pray anytime, anywhere, about anything.

Milky Soda

LESSON 4

Purpose: This activity will add a fun element to the service and will engage the children’s attention.

Description: The children will watch an engaging experiment conducted by the Teacher and Co-Teacher to capture the children’s attention and imagination.

Materials Needed: For this activity you will need this Help Sheet, one 20 ounce unopened plastic bottle of Coca-Cola®, 1/2 cup (or less) of milk, and one table to perform the experiment on.

To introduce this activity at the beginning of service, say the following:

1. Today’s experiment is called Milky Soda.2. Today we are going to find out what happens when you mix two pretty ordinary

things: Milk and Coca-Cola®.

Note: At the beginning of service the Teacher will come out from backstage whistling. Open the soda and add milk until there is no more room in the soda bottle. Put the lid back on the bottle and gently turn it upside down then right side up a couple of times. You will then let it sit throughout service. Once the Teacher has prepared the experiment, the Co-Teacher will enter and service will officially begin. Every five to ten minutes you will turn the bottle again until you examine it in the middle of the service during your experiment time.

For detailed instructions on how to do this activity, see the Teacher/Co-Teacher Training Video.

During the activity in the middle of service, say the following:

1. It’s almost time to go to our Scientific Groups but before we do, let’s take a look at today’s Science Experiment.

2. Look at what the milk did to the Coca-Cola® in such a short amount of time.3. At the bottom of the bottle is some Coca-Cola® looking syrup and on the top is a

clear liquid gel.

Note: Examine the results. You may want to have an example prepared ahead of time in case the experiment done during service needs more time to produce the best results. You can even wait to examine the experiment until after Scientific Groups to give the experiment more time to react.

After the activity, say the following:

Now it is time for our Scientific Groups. Have fun!

Begin the Opening Activity.

Lead the children through the Opening Activity “Atom Stacker,” or another Large Group Activity to engage the children’s attention as they enter the room. For a detailed example, watch the “Adventures In Science L4 Teacher/Co-Teacher Training Video.”

Begin Large Group Time with the “Countdown Video.” [1]

TEACHERHatchafalatcha there, kids! Did you have a good week? (looks at class) Say, another great looking class we have here today!

TEACHERThanks for coming everyone! I’m Professor (Teacher’s name) and this is AIS Laboratories. A place of research and development where we look at the miracles and mysteries of the Bible. It’s also where we do research just down the hall from the illustrious Dr. Oppenheimerstein and his robot, Flask. Dr. Opp is a brilliant scientist trying to win the famous Plutonium Award!

TEACHERNow it’s important in our lab to remember that we have lots of items we need to be careful around. Because of that, we have some very important rules that all of us need to follow. [2] The first is that everyone must stay in their seat at all times, unless we tell you that you can get up!

TEACHER[3] The second is that there should be no talking while we are up here on the AIS stage.

TEACHER[4] The third is be sure to keep your hands to yourselves.

TEACHER[5] And the fourth is to participate and have fun!

TEACHERAnd in order to begin having that, everybody stand up and help me kick off our time in the Adventures In Science Lab with a song!

Teacher leads the children in singing “Shout Out Loud.” [6]

TEACHERThat was some great singing! I have been anxious to get to church all week! Today, we are learnig that we can pray anywhere, anytime, and about anything! Sometimes we think we have to to bow my head, close my eyes, get on my knees, or clasp my hands together. But we don’t have to pray out loud, we can just talk to God silently with our mind any time we need.

TEACHERWe can pray like this because God is everywhere. There’s no place we can go where God isn’t with us. That’s how we can talk to God all the time, because He’s with us everywhere and He wants us to talk with Him. And that is today’s Main Point: God Is With Me Everywhere, I Should Talk To Him All The Time! Everybody up, I need your help shouting this Main Point! [8] God Is With Me Everywhere, I Should Talk To Him All The Time!

The Teacher leads the children to make up cheerleader-type hand motions that go along with the Main Point. Once everyone has gone over the Main Point, have the children repeat it with the motions two or three times.

TEACHERI love how this Main Point reminds us that God is with us everywhere. We know that God is with us everywhere because it says so in the Bible. In fact, if Dr. Oppenheimerstein will finally do some research, we should get to hear a story that proves God is everywhere. Let’s go see what the good doctor is up to today.

Teacher exits.

Play the “Skit and Bible Lesson Video.” [9]

Teacher re-enters.

TEACHERThat was a really cool story! It’s amazing to know that everywhere I go, God is with me. And because of that, I can talk to Him at any time. And you know what? The Bible says that we should try to talk to Him continually. Check it out: [10]

“Never stop praying.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NLT)

TEACHERThis verse means that throughout our day we should always be ready to talk to God, telling Him what we need and asking Him for guidance. And we can do that because He is everywhere we are!

TEACHERMost excellent! You know, when we pray and talk to God we are actually worshiping Him. Another way to worship is to sing praise songs to Him, which I would like to do right now!
