Lesson Introduction: This week is Holy Week. It is the week when we remember the events surrounding Jesus’ death on the Cross and His resurrection. This is a very important week. They were having a special meal together called the Passover.

What are some special meals that you, and your family, share? What do you enjoy about them? Does your family celebrate any meals that have special memories connected to them?

Jewish people, like Jesus and His disciples, celebrate Passover to remember the time when God saved the Israelites from Egypt. Now, through Jesus, God was going to do something incredible to save all people who put their trust in Him. Let’s watch and read together about what Jesus said to His disciples during that meal.

Lesson Introduction: Today is a day that we call Good Friday, but there are some parts of it that do not seem very good at all. Good Friday is the day when we remember that Jesus died on the Cross for us. Do you remember the story we shared yesterday? What were some things that happened? Jesus and His disciples shared a special meal, Jesus went to pray in a garden, Jesus was betrayed by Judas, Jesus was arrested.

After Jesus was arrested, He was not treated very well. He was brought before some leaders and it was decided by the people that He would die on a cross. In many ways, this was a very sad day. But God has an amazing way of bringing very good things out of very bad things. Let read about what happened on Good Friday in the Bible.

Read Luke 23:44-56As you read through the story, use the Bible Character cutouts to depict the scene. Slow down at key moments and invite your kids to think about the real events that their cutout scenes are depicting. At the end, seal Jesus in the tomb and place the tomb in a prominent place in your house. Invite everyone in the family to think about what Jesus did for us each time they pass by the tomb over the next two days.

Many years before Jesus came, God spoke through a prophet named Isaiah about what Jesus would do. This is what Isaiah wrote, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our sin; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Jesus went through a lot of pain, but His sacrifice takes away our sin, brings us peace, and heals us.

How does it make you feel to know that God loved you so much that He sent Jesus to save you?

Activity: Jesus Takes Away Our SinYou will need: two clear plastic cups, household bleach, baking soda, food coloring

For instructions check out the included video link. (Place where parents can help.)

* This is a great illustration for kids but please be super careful especially with the use of bleach. If you don’t feel comfortable doing the illustration yourself then you could simply show this video to your kids. The link is included for you so you can prepare the illustration beforehand. Below is a script you can read as you walk through the steps of the illustration or you can do so in your own words.

We were made to be in an amazing relationship with God. We were made to know Him, to love Him, and to be with Him. Something broke our relationship with God. The Bible uses the word sin to describe this. Sin is a lot of things (drop the food coloring in as you say this next part). Sin is all the anger, jealousy, selfishness, violence, and greed that we see in our world. It is the

wrong things we do too. Sin is also when we think badly about ourselves and feel bad about who we are. Sin keeps us away from God. This is why Jesus came. Something had to be done to break the power of sin in our lives and to renew our relationship with God. Jesus made this possible. When He died on the Cross, He took the punishment intended for us. Jesus never sinned. He lived His life in a perfect relationship with God the Father. Because Jesus is God, His death had the power to cover all of our sin. Watch as Jesus removes the sin in our lives (pour the bleach into the cup with the colored water). Just like we read a few moments ago, “By Jesus’ wound we are healed and when we believe in Him we have peace with God.”

Close in prayer together using the Lord’s Prayer: Close in prayer by writing thank you notes to Jesus. A fun idea would be to write your notes on a piece of paper towel, tree bark, egg carton, or another biodegradable item. After you’ve written the thank you prayer, bury the item in your garden explaining that in time, the item will be broken down and will become food for the plants. It will be a source for new life to grow from!.

roll the stone to the side. Relocate Jesus somewhere else in the house for the kids to find later.

Today is Easter Sunday! This is a very special day. This is a day of celebration, surprise, and joy. This is a day of new life. A couple days ago, we remembered the events of Good Friday. On Good Friday, Jesus died on the Cross and He was laid in the tomb.

Let’s read what happened on Easter morning.

Read Luke 24:1–3Let’s be like the people who went to see Jesus’ body that morning. Do you think anything will be different with our tomb? After discovering that the tomb is empty, keep reading the story beginning with Luke 24:4 and ending with 24:12.

What would you have felt or thought if you were one of the people who discovered that Jesus’ tomb was empty? Let’s see if we can find where Jesus went. Search for the Jesus cutout together. Once someone has found Him come back together to continue the lesson.

Jesus came to give us new life! That gift began with Him when He came back to life on the very first Easter. John 3:16 says, “God so loved the world that He gave Jesus, so that whoever believes in Him would not perish but would have everlasting life!” Isn’t that amazing? Because of Jesus we can have new life too!

Let’s review this incredible story of God’s love for us:Watch: The Story of Easter – Jesus’ Sacrificehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL8R158Ujp4

Close in Prayer

Activity: Signs of Life Scavenger Hunt As a family, go outside into your yard and search for signs of new life. Make a list of all the things you can find and thank God for the gift of life He has given us in Jesus!

At First Church, we usually have a special breakfast on Easter Sunday. Here are two for you to try out at home. These are both great recipes to create with the kids! At our Easter breakfast we gather together as a church family and share Monkey Bread and Breakfast Casserole. Try them out at home and say a special prayer thanking God for our First Church family.

Color the flannelgraph pieces, then cover the front with clear contact paper. Cut out the pieces. Glue small pieces of sandpaper or felt on the back of each piece, so they will stick to a flannel board. Use these flannelgraph pieces to tell the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection as told in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20, or read the story included at the end of this activity.

You can also photocopy the pages, and use these figures for other activities, such as, coloring pages, to create your own reader, wall posters, mobiles, etc.

One evening, Jesus went with His disciples to pray in a garden outside the city of Jerusalem.

Suddenly a group of soldiers came. They arrested Jesus and took Him away.

Jesus was condemned to die, even though He had done nothing wrong. Jesus died as a gift of His love for each one of us.

After Jesus died, His body was buried in a tomb.

A big stone was rolled in front of the entrance of the tomb.

Two soldiers stood in front of Jesus’ grave to guard it.

But the story doesn’t end there: Three days later a wonderful miracle happened. Angels appeared and rolled away the stone!

The soldiers were afraid and ran away.

Some women who were Jesus’ friends came to visit Jesus’ tomb.

But when they looked inside the tomb, Jesus’ body was gone!

“Do not be afraid,” the angels told them. “Jesus is not here. He has risen from the dead!”

Jesus’ friends were so happy! They quickly went away to tell the disciples.

When Peter and John heard the news, they didn’t know what to think, so they ran to the tomb.

To their amazement, the tomb was empty! Where is Jesus? they wondered.

Peter and John went back to their house, but Mary Magdalene stayed at the tomb crying. She missed Jesus.“Why are you crying?” a man asked.

Mary Magdalene thought it was the gardener. She asked him, “Where have you taken Jesus? Please tell me.”

“Mary,” Jesus said. “It is Me. Go and tell the others that I am alive!” Mary Magdalene was so happy to see Jesus!

She ran as fast as she could to tell the others the good news that Jesus had come back to life.

Later that evening the disciples were gathered together

...when suddenly Jesus appeared to them!

Jesus stayed with the disciples for a while and taught them many things. They were happy to have Jesus with them again.

Soon Jesus needed to return to His Father in heaven. He told His disciples, “Go and tell everyone in the world the good news about Me.”

“And don’t worry,” Jesus added. “I will always be with you in spirit!”

Then, right before their eyes, Jesus returned to heaven to be with His Father—God!

Every Easter we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, and the wonderful gift of salvation Jesus gave us through His death. Jesus lives!

The end
