White) Grade Level: Fifth Date: August 28, 2006 Description: Students will learn how about PowerPoint and how it works by viewing a PowerPoint on Trumpeter Swans. They will explore new information about Trumpeter Swans in order to create an informational brochure. Objective: Students will view a PowerPoint in order to create an informational brochure on Trumpeter Swans will 85% accuracy. Standards: ELA5W3 The student uses research and technology to support writing. The student a. Acknowledges information from sources. b. Uses organizational features of printed text (e.g., citations, end notes, bibliographic references) to locate relevant information. c. Uses various reference materials (e.g., dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, electronic information) as aids to writing. d. Uses the features of texts (e.g., index, table of contents, guide words, alphabetical/numerical order) to obtain and organize information and thoughts. e. Demonstrates basic keyboarding skills and familiarity with computer terminology (e.g., software, memory, disk drive, hard drive).

Trumpeter Swan Informational BrochureLesson Plan

Title of Lesson: Trumpeter Swan Brochure (ties in with the book Trumpet of the Swans by E. B. White)

Grade Level: Fifth

Date: August 28, 2006

Description:Students will learn how about PowerPoint and how it works by viewing a PowerPoint on Trumpeter Swans. They will explore new information about Trumpeter Swans in order to create an informational brochure.

Objective:Students will view a PowerPoint in order to create an informational brochure on Trumpeter Swans will 85% accuracy.

Standards:ELA5W3 The student uses research and technology to support writing. The studenta. Acknowledges information from sources.b. Assessment/Evaluation:Students will be assessed/evaluated on the accuracy of their brochure and the information it contains. Colorfulness, neatness, validity, and organization of information will be taken into consideration when evaluating.

Adaptations:Gifted- Allow students to add more information to brochure, explore other websites, and print other pictures.

Special Needs- Give one-on-one attention, show/aid in finding specific information, help with printing and reduce the feeling of being overwhelmed.

Materials:- Computer- Printer- CD with Trumpeter Swan PowerPoint burned onto it (attached to the back)- legal paper brochure (attached to the back)- markers- scissors- glue sticks- Trumpet of the Swans by E. B. White

Procedures:1. Group students together around the computer. Explain PowerPoint and the activity they

will be completing. 2. Have students take turns reading the information from the PowerPoint. Explain any

terms that may not be familiar to the students as the PowerPoint progresses. Give demonstrations along with visuals to explain any unknown information (example: diameter of the nest, wing span, height of bird, etc.).

3. After the Trumpeter Swan information has been covered, explain the reference page and how the websites work. Have students click on the first website, explore, and learn how to print a picture. Do the same with the other two sites.

4. Once everyone has had the opportunity to print a picture for the brochure, then pass out the legal paper brochures. Explain to students what the brochure must contain. Be sure students know/understand to use the PowerPoint presentation to complete their brochure.

5. Students will explore three different websites on Trumpeter Swans; they must have one fact from the internet. Explain that they have the choice to pick from one of the three websites. Some of their additional information may come from these sites as well.

6. When students complete the brochures and they have been graded, place in the hallway for others to read and enjoy. Many will learn information they never knew!
