COUNTING AND WRITING SIX & SEVEN LESSON PLAN Name: Matthew Glista Date: October 17, 2012 Grade Level/Subject: Kindergarten / Mathematics Prerequisite Knowledge: •Students should be able to at least identify all single-digit numbers. •Students should be able to at least count up to five and write each number 0- 5. Approximate Time: 25 minutes Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: •Students will understand that there is a unique and specific symbol to describe each number word. •Students will be able to recognize and write the numerals that describe the quantities 6 and 7. •Students will form the numbers 6 and 7 according to standard D’Nealian protocol. •Students will be able to identify some places where the numbers 6 and 7 can be found in nature. •Students will recall how to say numbers 0-7 in Spanish, as recently learned in their Spanish class. Common Core Content Standards: K.CC.3 - Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0 through 20. K.CC.4 - Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. K.CC.5 - Count to answer “how many?” questions with about as many as 10 things in scattered configuration. Materials/Resources/Technology: •Computer & projector to display Pearson activity and Numbers In Nature slides. •Whiteboard to demonstrate the proper D’Nealian formation of 6 and 7. •Posters demonstrating the D’Nealian strategy of writing 6 and 7. •Five-Frame mats and counters to help students visualize quantities of 6 and 7. •Pearson worksheet for Lesson 3-2 Implementation: Time 0:00-8:00 Opening of lesson: (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations) •Gather students on rug in their respective areas. •Introduce 6 and 7 via the D’Nealian posters. 0:00-8:00Opening of lesson: (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations)•Gather students on rug in their respective areas.•Introduce 6 and 7 via the D’Nealian posters. Ask for volunteers to name them (Eng & Span).•Show slides on 6 and 7 in nature via projector and elaborate on each.

8:00-24:00

Procedures: Include critical thinking questions and accommodations for individual needs•Go through online Pearson activity for Lesson 3-2•Demonstrate proper writing technique for each number on whiteboard. Have volunteers try.•Choose volunteer to distribute worksheets at students’ desks. Send students back to desks.•Demonstrate worksheet procedures via document reader and projector.•Circulate room to confirm student participation and understanding. Star finished work.

24:00-25:00

Summary/Closing:•Review with class:“Who can name the number that describes how many sides to a honeycomb and snowflake, and the number of legs that insects have?” 6!“Who can name the number that describes how many colors are in a rainbow and how many major tones are in the musical scale?” 7!

Student Assessment:•The validity of students’ worksheets will prove their mastery of the objectives.
