Lesson Plan Course: Introduction to Criminology Start Time: 14:00 Finish Time: 15:00 Room: David Hockney level 4. 13 Unit: Crime and Deviance Teacher: Khatoon Bi Week No. 14 Topic/Aims: Identify the role of a Prison Objectives: This is what all student should be able to do: Be able to understand the role of a prison Be able to understand the four key goals of prisons Be able to evaluate whether prisons do work or do not in regard to their key goals In Class activity: Match the key term to their correct definition – recap Pair discussion on meeting prison officer, feedback to class Group work, researching whether prisons do or do not work Some students should also: Be able to evaluate the usefulness of prisons to individuals/society Some students could also: Be able to think of alternative methods to Prison sentence Differentiation There is a learning assistant who supports the class. I have asked her to work alongside Eveline who is an ESL student, who sometimes requires extra support in her written work. She will be also be supporting Ali by keeping him focused on the tasks and give general group support to students if they need help, when I am helping others. There are 5 ESL students, who sometimes need extra support with spelling and grammar. Louis is having some personal issues, I will encourage him to work with his peers but I will not push him as recently he has requested to work alone. Fatima and Eveliene sometimes shy away from participating, and answering questions, I will aim to

Health and Safety: No scheduled fire alarms, in case of fire alarm take students to the nearest fire exit and to the designated area

No register needed as it has been done in the previous session (1-2pm) by me before break. Introduce session with the learning objectives.

Ask students to complete the key term activity. Then check the answers of the person next to them

Ask students to discuss key points from Tuesday’s session with the prison officer with the person next to them. And then share their experience with the whole group

Discuss the key role of the prison and prison population using official statistics from the internet

Ask students why they think there is an increase in the prison population

Discuss the four key goals of a prison

Ask students to give their suggestions to whether prisons do or do not work in groups using laptops to do their research

Ask students to feedback to the rest of the class, and ask them what could be the alternatives to prison sentence

Students will aim to understand the objectives of the session.

Students will match the key terms to their correct definition. Then peer assess the work of the person next to them. As a whole class go through the answers.

Students will express their thoughts and what they learnt on Tuesday lesson, and feedback to the whole group.

Students can take notes if they wish. They can compare statistics with other countries

Students will give their thoughts to why there may be an increase in prison population

Students can make notes on the four key goals

Students can use the laptops to do their research and work in a group

Students will feedback to the rest of the class, and think of alternatives form than prison sentence
