!Off-computer preparation: (Alphabet Nouns )

1. Introduce/review/or discuss NOUNS 2. Have students find a noun that begins with each letter of the alphabet and

fill in the Alphabet Nouns worksheet 3. Allow students to use dictionaries (online or text) for nouns that begin with

letters such as ‘X’. Require that students be able to explain the word they choose. !

ON-computer: 1. Have students create a new file named Alphabet.myname !2. Ask students to type each noun from their Alphabet Nouns sheet

i. using font size 12, ii. being sure to press RETURN or ENTER after each one. (Explain that

pressing RETURN or ENTER sends the cursor to the next line on the page) !

3. Remind students that only the first letter of the noun is to be capitalized. All other letters in the word should be lower case. !

The Project! - Lesson 2 Off-computer preparation: (Alphabet Adjectives ) !

1. Introduce/review/and discuss ADJECTIVES !2. Ask students to choose an appropriate adjective to describe each of their

nouns (Use Alphabet Adjectives worksheet) !ON-computer:

1. Ask students to open their file named Alphabet.myname !2. Tell students they need to click just to the left of the noun which begins with

“A”. Explain that the blinking cursor shows where the next letter will be typed. !

3. Looking at their ALPHABET ADJECTIVES worksheet, ask them to type the adjective they chose to modify the noun beginning with “A.” Remind students that only the first letter (the A) is a capital. The rest of the word should be in lower case. !

4. After typing the last letter of the adjective, tell students they must hit the TAB KEY two times so their words will be in columns. (Using the space bar may ‘look’ fine on the screen, but it will not print correctly - use the TAB)

Fast Food Fun[ Home ] [ Sample Spreadsheet ] [ Rubric ]

Objective: Use the Internet and spreadsheets to find calories and fat in a typical fast food meal.

Project Rubric:  Information on how this project will be graded.

Procedure: 

Step One:  

Decide which fast food restaurant you would like to visit. Click on that restaurant's web site below.

Other Restaurants:  http://www.nutritiondata.com/ (This site allows you to search many fast food restaurant sites.)

Once there, plan a meal with a sandwich, salad or other main dish, a side dish (french fries, etc), a drink, and a dessert. For each item on your menu, record the total calories and the caloriesfrom fat.

Step Two: 

Enter your data in an Excel spreadsheet.  Click here to see a sample and directions for completing the spreadsheet. When you have finished your spreadsheetand charts, complete the handout and return here for the rest of the project directions.  Compare your answers to at least one other student.  In your notebook,record information about which restaurant they visited, what food they ate, and the nutritional content of that food.  

Step Three: 

Visit the United States Department of Agriculture to find out more about healthy eating guidelines: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/dga/dguide95.html  Browsethrough this site and answer the questions on your handout.

Step Four: 

Using Microsoft Word, type a three paragraph report about your findings. Use the format for a one-page report on page 145 in your textbook.

Paragraph #1:  Introduction including which restaurant you chose and the items on your menu.

Paragraph #2:  Summarize your findings about your meal  including number of calories, percentage of fat, etc.  Copy and paste one of your charts into yourdocument as supporting evidence.

Paragraph #3:  Compare and contrast your meal with another student.  Use the information you recorded in step 2.

Paragraph #4:  Use the information from the Department of Agriculture to evaluate your meal.  How does your percentage of fat compare to the percentagerecommended?  What about other guidelines like eating fruits and vegetables.  Have you planned a healthy meal?  What changes might you make in your mealto make it healthier?  

When you finish the report, print it, attach it to your other handouts and put the whole packet in the basket.

Lesson Plan Topic: Creating a brochure with Word

Healey Date: October 19, 2004 How much time is needed? 2 hours Materials needed: PowerPoint presentation, Microsoft Word, clip art, text (Internet, if possible) Teacher expertise with computers: Intermediate or higher Student level of English: Intermediate or higher Why technology is used in this lesson: To integrate text and graphics in a special format. Plan B for less or no technology: a) Design a handout on paper; think about the topic, the instructional goal, and the text and graphics needed. b) Plan a class newsletter. Decide the goal and how the tasks will be divided up. Overview: Trainees will add graphics to text. Those with more expertise will learn how to use styles and how to find and use templates in Word for more detailed documents, such as a 3-fold brochure or a newsletter. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, all trainees will be able to use graphics to enhance a class handout in Word. More advanced trainees will be able to use styles and Word templates. If the Internet is working, they will be able to download templates from the Microsoft website. Training content:

Warm-up activities/review: Discussion of use of handouts for classroom instruction. What makes them good? Instructions: 1. Watch the PowerPoint lesson and participate in discussion about it. 2. Brochure template to download it to My Documents. (No Internet) Choose New from the File menu. Click on the Publications tab and double-click on Brochure.

7. Delete the text that is there - notice that there are three columns. Insert your own graphics and text that will fit your lesson.

8. (If the Internet is working) Go to the Microsoft templates site. Select a template of interest and download it. Add your own text and graphics.

Follow-up activities: Compare your result with a partner's. Offer helpful suggestions.

Assessment (how will you know the lesson was successful?): Look at the handout that was created. Does it include text and graphics? Does it help students learn something?

Lesson Procedure:1. Have students read the FFYYII feature with a partner or discuss it whole class. Encourage students to sharetheir own examples of ways they've heard products in advertisements are altered to look more appealing,or experiences they've had with photographs that have been retouched.

2. Play the Media Literacy movie with closed-captioning on to aid students in comprehension. Havestudents talk with a partner about real-life examples they've seen of the advertisement strategies in action.Pass out the AAccttiivviittyy (which lists the strategies at the top of the page) to help facilitate discussion.

3. Tell students you are going to play the Media Literacy movie through a second time, and this time, youwant them to take notes using the activity form. Each student should choose 3 advertising strategies fromthe movie to write about, ensuring that they choose a different set of strategies than their partner. You maywant to pause the movie to allow additional writing time, and provide several minutes after the movie isover for students to complete each section and talk about it.

4. Challenge students to work with their partner to use the Make-A-Map tool. They will create a graphicorganizer which explains each of the common advertising strategies they wrote about on their activitysheets. The Make-a-Map created by each pair of students should feature the 6 strategies they took noteson, and may include the additional 2 strategies from the movie for extra credit.

5. Have students complete the PPrriimmaarryy SSoouurrccee AAccttiivviittyy for homework or in a follow-up lesson.
