Will a Credit Freeze Boost Car Insurance Premiums

Q Irsquove heard that insurers use credit data to set premiums but I froze my credit reports after the Equifax data breach Will this affect my car insurance rates -CM New York City

A All states except California Hawaii and Massachusetts allow insurers to use your credit-based ldquoinsurance scorerdquo as a factor when setting rates And in a few of those states including New York if you donrsquot unfreeze one or more of your credit reports when applying for an insurance policy the score could come back as a ldquono hitrdquo and you could be treated as if you have no credit history In that case you could end up with a higher premium because you wouldnrsquot earn any discounts for having a good score says Jill Roth an independent insurance agent in Alexandria Va But most states allow credit reviews for insurance purposes even if the files are frozen says Penny Gusner an insurance expert at Insurecom

Let your agent or insurer know about the freeze before you apply for a policy Also ask if you should thaw your report before a renewal especially if you can benefit from a higher score says Justin Herndon an Allstate spokesman

Guidelines for Giving Gifts at WorkSOURCE tthebalancecarrerscom July 21 2019 | Reprinted with sincere thanks

By L AHLE WOLFE

Although workplace gift-giving should not be considered mandatory many people and businesses do exchange gifts especially during the holidays That means every December when businesses honor the holiday gift-giving custom people need to navigate the tricky gift-giving waters Some employees wonder if they need to give a gift to their bosses The answer ismdashgifts should flow downward not upward

Another common dilemma is how you deal with co-worker pressure to give more than you can afford to a holiday gift collection Also a big concern each year is what are appropriate gifts for colleagues

The Pressure of Group Gift-GivingEach office will have its own gift-giving rulesmdashincluding rules for donating to charities If your office is taking up a collection for a group gift for a colleague you may feel uncomfortable about pitching in Perhaps yoursquore new to the office or yoursquore just financially strapped at the moment If yoursquore being pressured to chip in for a gift when yoursquod rather not itrsquos okay to say ldquoSorry but I need to passrdquo or ldquoSorry my budget wonrsquot allow it this yearrdquo

Giving Gifts to ColleaguesAs a general rule gifts that are intended to be put on the recipientrsquos bodymdashsuch as perfume lotion clothes or jewelrymdashare too personal to give to work colleagues Gag gifts should also be avoided because they can be hit or miss especially if you donrsquot know the recipient that well
