LET’S PLAY 2015Cliffs Pavilion

A little guide on what to expect and how to behave in a classical music concert

by Harry and Ralph from Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary, Leigh-on-Sea

On Friday 3rd July, you are going to the Cliffs Pavilion with your

school to watch a concert.

The Cliffs Pavilion

You will be watching a concert performed by an orchestra. The orchestra will look a bit like this...

It’s a very special concert for children!

We want to show you how amazing live music is and inspire you to learn an

instrument!

Make sure you get there early!

The orchestra will be playing in this auditorium…

When you get to the theatre you will be shown to your seat.

A TIP FROM

HARRY AND RALPH

Be careful of the seats. They flip up and down!Check the seat is down

before sitting on it!ARGHH!

Before the concert starts the orchestra will come onto the stage and start to warm up and tune up.

When they tune up the oboe will play the note A.All the other instrumentshave to check their A sounds exactly the same.

It they didn’t tune up the music would sound terrible!

While they are getting ready to start, see if you can find the different sections of the orchestra!

I hope that penguin isn’t really going to conduct!

Can you see the string section?

cellos

violins

violas

double basses

harp

Can you spot these woodwind instruments?

flute and piccolo

oboe

clarinet

bassoon

cor anglais

Look out for the brass section!

trumpets

trombones

french horn

tuba

You will hear the percussion section!!

Then the LEADER (who always plays the violin) and the CONDUCTOR will

come on. The audience are allowed to clap at this bit!

Actually, his name is

David and he looks like this

Then you will meet Barney (not the dinosaur )!

Barney Harwood (you have probably seen him on TV) is our presenter and will tell you all about the music you are going to hear!

Once the concert starts there are a few things you need to remember to

do!

READY??

PLEASE…..NO…

yawningsingingalong

whispering

(They’ll think you are bored!)

Shhhh! The orchestra get distracted and it annoys other

people who are trying to listen!

Try not to move too much!!

Keep still and concentrate on the music!

(You can have a wiggle and a fidget in between pieces!)No running up and

down the aisles.

If you do need to leave the auditorium try to do it in between pieces and wait until you hear the clapping before you come back in!

If you have brought them, please be quiet with your sweet wrappers!

BATON

At the end of the concert make sure you take your rubbish with you and put it in the bin outside!

We hope you enjoy the concert!!

If you already play an instrument and want to join an orchestra or band OR you would like to learn an instrument please ask your teacher to contact Southend Music Hub on 01702 215861 for more information.
