My favourite wild animal

My favourite wild

animal is the tiger. The

tigers have got

reddish-orange

to near-white fur

and dark vertical

stripes. They live

in eastern and

South Asia.

They eat

meat and they

are predators of

other animals. They are

very strong.

Tigers are territorial

and solitary animals. They

need a large

territory for

their preys.

They are in

danger of

extinction

because people

are destroying

their habitat.

Tigers live for

about 10–15 years in the

wild, but can live longer

than 20 years in captivity.

At the wildlife park

Catarina: Hello, João. How are you?

João: I'm fine thanks. And you?

Catarina: I'm fine, too. Is 21st March a special day?

João: Yes, it is. It's the World Forestry Day.

Catarina: What's your favourite wild animal?

João: My favourite wild animal is the chimpanzee. And yours?

Catarina: My favourite animal is the panda. Do you like pandas?

João: Yes, I do, but I prefer the chimpanzees because they swing

from tree to tree. And you? Do you like chimpanzees?

Catarina: Yes, I do. But I prefer the pandas because they are sweet.

João: Do the pandas eat bamboo?

Catarina: Yes, they do.

João: The chimpanzees' habitat is the rain forests. They sleep in

trees and they eat plants, fruit and meat.

Catarina: Look at the information! The information says that there

are about forty chimpanzees and look at the photo, it's

beautiful!

João: The nature is very interesting, huh?

Catarina: Yes, I think so.

João: Tomorrow our class will have a field trip to the wildlife

park of Arrábida.

Catarina: That's an interesting field trip.

João: Oh, it's six o'clock. I must go home.

Catarina: Ok. Bye!

João: Goodbye!

My favourite wild animal is

the bald eagle. I like it because

I think it is beautiful, very

powerful and majestic. It is the

symbol of the United States of

America. It’s black in the body

and in the wings and it’s white in

the head, in the neck and in the

tail. It has got a very strong

and long beak and very strong

claws. It has got a very good

eye and it flies very fast. The

length of the span of eagles’ wings is almost two meters.

It lives in coniferous forests near the sea, rivers and

lakes in Alaska. It eats fish. It hunts the fish with its

claws and then it smashes

them and kills them with its

beak. Then it gives the food

to its young eagles. When the

young eagles are ready to fly

and hunt, their parents expel

them from the nest. The bald

eagle builds its nests in the

trees with small sticks.

The Butterfly

The butterfly is an insect of the order Lepidopteres, which means “wings in scale”. The scales are coloured. They

measure about 3mm to 30cm. They can fly up to 20 km/h.

Most species are diurnal. They weight about 0,3g to 3g.

The butterflies have got two pairs of membranous

feathers. They’re pollinators of several species of plants.

The cycles of the butterflies are:

1) Egg - pre-larval phase

2) Larvae

3) Pupa – develops in cocoon

4) Imago - adulthood

The chimpanzee is

a jungle animal. It

lives in the African

jungle or in the

savannah.

There are about 150.000 chimpanzees in the

world. They live in groups from 5 to 100 elements.

Chimpanzees can reach 1,60 m tall and weigh 70

kg. They eat fruit, flowers, birds and wasps.

They live for about sixty years.

They are very intelligent and they have many

characteristics in common with the man. The

chimpanzee is my favourite animal and I love it!

My favourite animals are foxes. Foxes are orange white in the

back and black on the muzzle. They’ve got short legs and long tail.

They live in the forest.

They eat meat: rabbits,

birds, small rodents, fish, eggs

and insects. They sometimes

eat some fruits.

They hunt in the evening

and at night. They run very fast. They live for about 10 years.

I like foxes because they are sneaky and agile.

Koalas belong to the class of the mammalians and

to the family of the marsupials.

They’re very rare. They exist only in the east part of Australia.

They have got long grey fur as a bear. They weight between 4 and 15 kg.

The koalas have got large sharp claws to assist with climbing tree trunks.

The koalas have five fingers and they are one of the few mammalians that

has fingerprints. Their fingerprints are similar to human fingerprints and it’s

quite difficult to distinguish between the two.

They spend the time on the trees and they sleep most part of the day.

Koalas walk on all four legs when they walk on the ground.

They are vegetarian and they eat only eucalyptus leafs. They don’t eat meat

or fruits. Their teeth are adapted to their herbivorous diet. They have sharp

incisors to clip leaves at the front of the mouth.

The word koala means “that doesn’t drink” in the aborigine language and

that’s true because they don’t drink any water.

The hedgehog is a big insectivore with its back covered with sharp

spines.

When it feels danger it curls up, exposing the thorns as defense

weapons.

Its fur is dark, from brown to black. It weighs about 700 grams

and measures about 18 to 20 centimetres.

It is a solitary animal and we can find it at night.

The hedgehogs eat

invertebrates that live in the

soil: earthworms, beetles,

caterpillars, spiders and slugs.

It also eats eggs and small

vertebrates - frogs, lizards,

rodents and young birds.

The hedgehog hibernates

from November to March.

It lives for about 3 years but some hedgehogs sometimes live for

7 to 10 years.

The main causes of mortality are starvation during hibernation and

predation. Its main predators are foxes, badgers and even dogs.

Toucans are very beautiful

birds. They are black and white

and they have an orange and

yellow beautiful beak. The beak

is big and hollow.

They live in the forests of

Central and South America.

They eat fruit, insects and small

preys, like lizards. They also eat birds’ eggs.

They can be 55 cm in length. They fly from

tree to tree to find food. They also rest in the

trees.

Toucans live for about 20 years.

PARROTS My favourite animals are parrots. Parrots are

very colourful: red, yellow, blue and green. They

have got strong legs and clawed feet.

They live in rain forests in South America and

Australia. They eat seeds, nuts, fruit, buds and

other plant material. They fly very fast.

Parrots live for about 80 years. Some species can

reproduce the sounds of the human speech.

I like parrots because they´re beautiful.

The Beaver The beaver is a wild animal

that lives in rivers and lakes

near forests. Beavers are

known for building dams on

rivers using trees

They are brown and grey

but there are others that are black or white. Their height doesn’t

exceed 30 cm. Their weight ranges from 20 to 30 kg.

They have got big teeth, very

strong and long, necessary to eat

the bark of the trees.

They eat fish, birds and small

mammals. They also feed on tree

bark and leaves but they can also eat lettuce, carrots and objects

they gnaw.

Beavers live up to 24 years of

age in the wild.

The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest is a

tropical forest in South America.

This forest is extended for seven

million square kilometres. The

majority of the forest is in Brazil, but

it is also in Peru, Colombia,

Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia,

Guyana, Suriname and French

Guiana.

In this forest there is an incredible biodiversity: 2.5 million insect species, tens of

thousands of plants, 2,000 birds and mammals, 3,000 fish species, etc. One in ten

species in the world lives in Amazonia and

one in five of all birds in the world live in this

rainforest. We can name some of the many

animals that live there: black caiman, jaguar,

cougar, anaconda, scarlet macaw....

The Amazon rainforest is in the basin of a

river, the Amazon River and this river is

widespread along 6,800 km. It’s the biggest

drainage basin in the world. This big river receives the

water from many smaller rivers, including Marañón,

Japurá, Rio Negro, Ucayali, Purus, Madeira, Xingu and

Tocantin. In the river and its margins there are a lot of

animals, too: electric eels, piranha, poison dart frogs,

vampire bats and rabies.

The Amazon Rainforest and its river are very

beautiful and amazing.

Wild lions live in sub-Saharan

Africa and in the forests in Asia.

They are in danger of extinction.

They hunt large mammals such

as antelopes, zebras, wildebeests,

impalas, warthogs, etc.

The lion is nicknamed the "king of

beasts" because it is - under

natural and normal conditions - on

top of the food chain. The adult

male lion has got a mane; it makes the lion appear larger and

intimidating.

Lions live for about 10-14 years in nature, but males rarely

live more than ten years, because they suffer serious pain in

combat sustained in fighting.

The Pandas

Pandas are black and white. They live in

the jungle. They eat bamboo, and they also

eat fish.

They are similar in the appearance with

the bears. The pandas can measure up to

1.5m and weight about 140 kg. Some years

ago they almost disappeared, but now

people are protecting them.

The Woodpecker

The woodpecker is a

bird of the order

Piciformes, family Picidae.

It has got small to

medium size and

coloured feathers and the

males have got a red

crest.

They live in the forest

where they make their nests. Its eggs, four to

five, are hatched by the male and the female

during 20 days.

They eat larvae and insects that they find on

the trunks of the trees. The woodpecker can

give 100 pecks per minute in a tree.
