On behalf of the
CBSA Board of
Directors, I want to
thank all of our
BioWest speakers,
sponsors, exhibi-
tors and attendees.
We had a dynamic,
informative confer-
ence and have received positive feedback
from many of you. Over 350 attendees en-
joyed a full day including keynote presenta-
tions from Ginger Graham and Mike Huck-
man and the track sessions. The day ended
with the Venture Showcase presentations by
five local startup companies from the medi-
cal device, diagnostic and therapeutic areas.
VetDC from Ft Collins won the competition
and a cash prize of $7,500.
As we look ahead we have several other
major programs coming up including the An-
nual Awards Dinner on December 6th. I’m
pleased to share with you that we have con-
firmed George Sparks, President and CEO
of Denver Museum of Nature and Science
as our keynote speaker. Tickets and tables
are now available!
The state legislature will see significant
changes after the 2012 election with many
term limited seats available. The goal of
CBSA is to keep our industry front and cen-
ter to those running for election and re-
election. We have and will continue to host
a series of legislator briefings in key commu-
nities to inform and update state leaders on
the importance of our industry to Colorado
and introduce them to companies in their
community.
The CBSA staff is also preparing to attend
the AdvaMed Conference in Boston, MA in
October. We look forward to representing
Colorado’s 350 medical device and diagnos-
tic companies and promoting our industry at
a national level.
The search process for filling the President/
CEO position is well underway. Our ad hoc
search committee is currently reviewing ap-
plications and will start interviews shortly. I
look forward to keeping you up-to-date on
our progress.
Sincerely,
Steve Orndorff, Ph.D.

Accelerator Grand Opening
Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority (FRA) officially
opened its new Accelerator Building August 22, 2012, ad-
jacent to its original Incubator Building at the Bioscience
Park Center (BCP) in the Fitzsimons Life Science District.
The four biotech companies — Mitomics USA, Isogenis/
Greffex, Touch of Life Technologies and Light Labs — are
among 39 firms that have been housed in Bioscience
Park Center. They have run out of room and are graduat-
ing to the $8 million, three-story, 37,000-square-foot ex-
pansion, taking up most of that space. The new facility
already is 78 percent leased.
"It's a nice problem to have when you haven't even
opened your new building yet and you could potentially
now be limited in space again," said the authority's new
president and CEO, Steve VanNurden to the Denver Post.
The new space includes:
Built-to-suit spaces with access to incubator services
and amenities
World class resources at your finger tips - university
research facilities and major medical centers
Collaborative environment with complimentary busi-
ness and networking opportunities
"The Bioscience Park Center is designed to foster a col-
laborative environment—by having established
companies in close proximity to incubator startups—
further promoting an essential atmosphere that makes the
Fitzsimons Life Science District an important hub in the
overall growth of Colorado’s bioscience industry," Van-
Nurden explains.

Internship Program Highlights
TOLMAR is a Fort Collins, Colorado based pharmaceuti-
cal research, development, manufacturing and commer-
cial operations company. TOLMAR develops and manu-
facturers both proprietary and generic pharmaceutical
products with specific focus in therapeutic areas of dental,
dermatology, and oncology.
TOLMAR is proud to offer a robust, paid summer intern-
ship program that provides challenging assignments for
students to expand their skills and contribute to important
projects impacting the company. This summer, TOLMAR
was host to nine interns with students representing a
spectrum of local schools including, Colorado State, Uni-
versity of Colorado, University of Northern Colorado, and
School of Mines. Students worked in a variety of depart-
ments across the company including, Process and Ana-
lytical Development, Engineering, Clinical, Microbiology
and Quality Control.
Carolyn Worley, University of Colorado Student ,
Analytical Development Department Intern
“Interning at TOLMAR in the Analytical Development de-
partment has afforded me the opportunity to engage in
method development from beginning to end. Focusing on
gas chromatography (GC), development on a new test
method begins by finding the optimal chromatographic
parameters, ones that would allow for good peak size,
shape and resolution. Here, problem solving and critical
thinking are employed to investigate how disparities in the
method parameters could effect the final chromatograms.
This internship has allowed me to take classroom
knowledge and apply it to practical applications. I am very
grateful to have been at TOLMAR this summer; the ac-
cepting and helpful nature of everyone I interacted with
coupled with the industry knowledge I gained provided an
exceptional experience.”
Carolyn Worley, University of Colorado Student ,
Analytical Development Department Intern
“Overall, our internship has offered numerous learning
opportunities and invaluable experience. Our internship at
TOLMAR has given us an increased understanding of the
pharmaceutical industry and the professional world in
general that compliments our academic education and
prepares us for life after graduation.”
