TheMuseumwasimmenselyfortunatetoreceiveamajorbequestfromthelateDr.
VanceE.KondonandhiswifeElisabethGiesberger.KondonwasoneofSanDiego’s
premierartcollectorsandanavidsupporterofthecity’sculturalscene.Hiscollection
rangedfromfigurativeworksfromthefirsthalfofthe20thcenturytorefinedabstract
piecesfrom1950forward.Oursubsequent Iconicshowallowedustohighlightthisvery
importantgroupofworksthathavefoundapermanenthomeintheMCASDcollection.
TheMuseumhostedtwoimportantfundrasiersthisyear.OnSeptember10,2011,Monte
Carlo Goes Burlesque,co-chairedbyValerieCooperandDavidC.Copley,offeredtwo
incredibleperformancesbyrenownedburlesqueperformerDitaVonTeese.Thisyear’s
galageneratedrecord-breakingproceedstosupportourprogramsandexhibitions.
TheMuseumhosteditseighthBiennialArtAuctiononMay30,2012,whichfeaturedalive
andsilentauctionofartworksdonatedbyinternationallyrecognizedartistsandemerging
contemporaryartists.Theauctionwasatremendoussuccess,nettingupwardsof
$600,000thatwillsupportMCASD’sartacquisitions,exhibitions,andeducationprograms.
OnApril25weheldour27thAnnualSelectionDinner,andarepleasedtoreportthat
threenewacquisitionswerechosenbyourInternationalandContemporaryCollectors.
TheseincludeworksbySpencerFinch,JackWhitten,andCatherineOpie.
Alsoinspring,welaunchedayouthartcontestthatinvitedpeopleages25andunder
tosubmittheiroriginalartinspiredbythehumaneye(a.k.a.TheGreedyOrgan),for
thechancetohavetheirworkdisplayedatashowcaseeventandfeaturedinMuseum
advertising.Thissuccessfulcontestgeneratedmorethan100entriesandwasawayto
furtherengageyoungaudiences.Thecampaignservedasanextensionofour25and
underfreeadmissionprogramwhichisgenerouslysupportedbyQualcommFoundation.

Timeinitiative,acollaborationamongmore
thansixtyculturalinstitutionsacrossSouthern
CaliforniatocelebratetheLosAngelesartscene
from1945to1980.Phenomenalwasthemost
ambitiousexhibitioninourMuseum’shistory,and
Iampleasedtosayitwasamongthemostwell-
receivedPSTexhibitionsbythepublic,industry
peers,andartcritics.Featuringworksbythirteen
artists,morethan40ofwhichwerefromourownholdings,Phenomenalshowcased
worksfromtheLightandSpacemovementincludingLarryBell,RobertIrwin,Bruce
Nauman,JamesTurrell,andDeWainValentine.
Additionally,theMuseumopenedanumberofexceptionalexhibitionsincludingJohn
Baldessari: A Print Retrospective From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His
Family Foundation,anexpansivesurveyoftheartist’sentirebodyofprintmakingwhich
openedinFebruary.NextcametheU.S.museumdebutofAiWeiwei’sCircle of Animals/

Extended School Partnership (ESP)
MCASD’sExtendedSchoolPartnership(ESP)programempowersteacherstouse
theMuseumasanextensionoftheclassroom.Bydevelopingtheteacher’sability
toincorporatecontemporaryartintoacurriculumandsparkingstudents’interest
inartbyintroducingthemtooriginalartobjectsinthegalleries,MCASDprovides
awaytoreinstatearts-basedlearningintheclassroomandstrengthentherole
ofthegalleryasalearningenvironment.Theprogramconsistsofprofessional
developmentfortheclassroomteacherandmultipleweeksofclassvisitsto
theMuseumledbyboththeclassroomteacherandMCASDGalleryEducators.
Thereisaculminatingeventinwhichtheschool’scommunityaswellasstudents’
familiesandfriendscelebratetheiraccomplishmentsandshowcasetheir
artworkandtheirlearningattheMuseum.ESPprovidesstudentsandteachers
withaspaceforintimateinteractionwiththeworksofart,bolsteringcorearts
curriculum,andenrichingnon-artscurriculumsbyallowingstudentstolearninan
interdisciplinaryway.
Duringthe2011–2012academicyear,theESPprogrambecamethecornerstone
ofMCASD’sschoolprograms.TheMuseumcollaboratedwithfivedifferentteach-
erswhotaughtsubjectsrangingfromartandbiologytomathandhumanities,
andservedatotalof500students.MCASDhostedthreeshowcaseswithpartner-
ingschools—KingChavezHighSchool,HighTechHighChulaVista,andHighTech
HighMediaArts—drawing650peopletotheMuseum’sdowntowncampus.
Educator Programs
MCASDbelievesinthevalueofprofessionaldevelopmentforeducatorsand
continuestoofferprogramstohelpdevelopeducators’capacitiestointegratethe
artsintotheirclassroom.Approximately200educatorsattendedtwoeducator
receptionsfeaturingexhibitionsatboththedowntownandLaJollalocations.The
fallreceptionintroducededucatorstotheexhibitionPhenomenal: California Light,
Space, Surface,andthespringreceptionkickedoffthereleaseofArt21Season
Six.Additionally,theMuseumhostedtheSanDiegoCountyBoardofEducation’s
springseriesofvisualandperformingarts(VAPA)standardsworkshops.
Educator First Look Tours
DuringFY12,theEducationDepartmentdevelopedaprogramtocontinueexpand-
ingitsrelationshiptoeducatorsteachingintheK-12schoolsystem,out-of-school
systems,andcollegeanduniversityfacultybyinvitingthemtoparticipateina
freetourtointroducethemtoournewlyopenedexhibitions.

developpublicteenprograms.
TheTeenArtCouncilprogramempoweredtwelveteensrepresenting
nineschoolsfromNorthCountytoChulaVistatodeveloppublicprogramsat
MCASDfortheSanDiegoteenpopulation.DuringFY12,threeTAC-designed

For27years,theCollectorsCirclehasbeenadrivingforcebehindtheMuseum’s
manysuccesses,andFY12wasnoexception.WithsupportfromInternational
andContemporaryCollectors’dues,wewereabletomakekeyacquisitionsto
thepermanentcollectionduringtheAnnualSelectionDinner,aneventheld
exclusivelytocelebratetheCollectorsandtheirsignificantcontributionstothe
Museum.Duringthelivelyaffair,theyvotedtopurchasealuminousoverhead
