Three Ways to Give Back During the Holidays
The holiday season is now underway, and this is the perfect time
to give back to the community! If you’re looking for ways to
serve, you can send a postcard to thank those in service, lay
wreaths across veteran graves, and virtually judge or guide a
science project. To find opportunities in your area, please visit
our service opportunities page and look for the Volunteer Match
widget.
Send a Postcard to Thank Those Who Serve
We have, once again, partnered with A Million Thanks and the American Red Cross to send a note

commits itself to year-round appreciation to our servicemen and women through letters and cards.
The American Red Cross is an organization that helps prepare communities for emergencies and
offers assistance to those in need. To show your thanks, please complete our online form. Once
received, the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs will handwrite your sentiment and mail it out just
in time for the holidays!
Lay Wreaths on the Graves of Veterans
We invite you to participate in a wreath laying ceremony on December 10, 2011 at Arlington
National Cemetery, sponsored by Wreaths Across America. Wreaths across America is a nonprofit

Marine Corps Tuition Assistance Update
On October 26, 2011, the Marine Corps reversed their decision
regarding some changes to their tuition assistance (TA) policy.
Undergraduates will continue to receive $250/credit hour with an
annual cap of $4,500/year, complying with the Department of
Defense (DOD) Standardized TA policy. Graduate student TA
was reduced to $250/credit hour, with an annual cap of
$4,500/year.
For those of you that were unaware of the original decision, here is some information on the
background of this decision. On October 1, 2011, Marine Corps officials changed their TA policy,
reducing the benefit to $175/credit hour for undergraduate courses and $225/credit hour for
graduate courses; reducing the annual cap to $875 for undergraduates and $1,125 for graduates.
However, as noted in the opening paragraph, the decision was reversed. You may have heard that
the DOD is considering possible cuts to the TA program in conjunction with overall budget cuts for
the upcoming fiscal year. No official announcement has been received at this time, but we will
promptly notify you if the DOD or the individual Services amend the current TA rates. Any
questions regarding the Marine Corps’ TA policy should be directed to your installation Education
Services Officer (ESO).

Oral History of the FBI National Academy Presented: Part One
Tim Hardiman, Law Enforcement Outreach Manager, presented
the first version of AMU’s Oral History of the FBI National
Academy to the National Academy Associates (NAA) Board of
Directors. The presentation took place at the recent meeting of
the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference in
Chicago, Illinois. This is just one part, of a series of videos, that
when completed late next year, will be donated to the National
Law Enforcement Museum Archives in Washington, D.C—showcasing a complete oral history of the
FBI National Academy.
AMU was commissioned by the NAA Board in July 2010 to conduct a series of videotaped interviews
of noteworthy graduates of the FBI National Academy on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary.
Since that time a team of six National Academy Graduates serving as interviewers, have sat with
selected National Academy graduates who attended the National Academy as far back as the
1960’s. Interviewers have sought to capture their thoughts about the impact of historical events on
the law enforcement community and its emergence in modern society. After completing interviews
of prominent members of the European Law Enforcement Community later next year, we plan to let
you know how you can view the complete oral history in the museum archives.

Partnering with FBI InfraGard and Loss Prevention Foundation
We will soon sign off on separate agreements with two major
national organizations that provide support to the private
security sector in North America, FBI InfraGard and the Loss
Prevention Foundation (LPF). The partnership with FBI InfraGard
will give us direct access to over 45,000 members and allow us
to be regular attendees at chapter training programs. A
partnership with LPF will allow us to offer enhanced educational
opportunities to the security personnel of member retail and manufacturing businesses.
FBI InfraGard is an information sharing and analysis organization formed in partnership with the
FBI and with businesses, academic institutions, and law enforcement agencies for the purpose of
sharing information and intelligence to prevent hostile acts against the U.S. The Loss Prevention
Foundation provides educational resources to the loss prevention industry through certification
programs, online educational resources, and career-oriented membership. For more information on
these projects and programs, contact Jeff Kuhn, Associate Vice President of Business Development-
Public Safety.

DETC Graduate of the Year Recipient Announced
We are pleased to announce the recipient of the Distance
Education & Training Council (DETC) Outstanding Graduate of
the Year Award! This year’s award recipient, Jeff Harrell of
Smithfield, VA, earned his Bachelor of Science in Sports and
Health Sciences from AMU in August 2011. DETC defines the
Outstanding Graduate of the Year Award recipient as a graduate
whose "...academic record, and level and quality of their
contributions to society, and their chosen profession have distinguished themselves in their careers
and society." These graduates are irrefutable evidence that distance study is truly a viable
educational option.
Jeff’s exceptional academic achievements while attending AMU, impressive service to his country,
and professional achievements while working for the U.S. Departments of Defense and State made
him an outstanding candidate for this award. While deployed as a Protective Security Specialist and
Medic in Iraq from 2006 to 2011, Jeff was assigned to the Department of Defense’s Provincial
Reconstruction Teams, Department of State’s High Threat Protection program, and the
Ambassador’s Protective Detail. In Early 2011, he accepted the position of Project Manager in South
America supporting numerous State Department operations. Congratulations Jeff on this
outstanding achievement!
This year we had two other candidates who are deserving of an honorable mention, as the top three
candidates all scored very high on our assessment for this award. Jocelyn Mitnaul of Chapel Hill,
North Carolina was a runner up for the award and received her Master of Arts in Intelligence
Studies with honors from AMU in August 2011. While deployed as the Officer in Charge of
Intelligence Operations at Ramstein Airbase, Germany, she supported the execution of over one
thousand missions into Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa. She is currently attending the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. Michael Collett of Fairfax, Virginia was the
other runner up for the award and received his Master of Arts in Intelligence Studies from AMU in
August 2011. He is currently a Staff Coordinator with the Drug Enforcement Administration Special
Operations Division assigned to Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he has received yearly recognition
for his outstanding accomplishments.

Participation in the Military TA Program Continues
We want to assure all of our students, in response to recent
concerns, that we are in full compliance with the Military Tuition
Assistance (TA) program’s Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU). Earlier this year, the Department of Defense (DOD)
made it a requirement for all institutions participating in the
Military TA program to have a Memorandum of Understanding
with DOD.
According to the DOD, the purpose of the MOU is to:
Ensure all educational providers understand and agree to abide by DOD policies prior to
enrolling service members into their institution
Articulate the commitment and agreement educational institutions provide to DOD by
accepting funds via the Services’ TA programs in exchange for educational services
Permit institutions with signed MOUs to participate in the TA program
Dr. Boston signed the MOU in July 2011, allowing our university to continue our participation in the
TA program.

Join Our February 2012 Virtual Career Fair
Mark your calendar! The next virtual career fair (VCF) will take
place February 28 – March 1, 2012. The most recent virtual
career fair drew more than 50 employers and over 1200 job
seekers, and the next one is promising to be just as popular.
Sotera Defense Solutions, Inc. (Sotera) participated in the past
two VCF’s and as a result hired Nicholas Shaw, who’s pursuing
his Master of Arts in Intelligence Studies. Nicholas offers a few
lessons he learned from his position at Sotera and his own virtual job search.
Nicholas was first brought on as an intern at Sotera and was subsequently hired as a member of
their recruiting team. His opportunities continue, as he will soon be transitioning to a national
security policy advisory position within the company. In his own words, Nicholas stated that the
VCF has “been a great experience all the way through, and I would not have found this company or
this job without the [virtual] career fair resources.” In light of his experience, he offers valuable
advice to job seekers planning to attend the next VCF.
Have a solid resume: Spend time crafting a well-written, coherent, and spell-checked
resume which clearly outlines your career goals, qualifications, and contact information.
Get your resume reviewed: Have multiple people review your resume before settling on a
final version to present to a potential employer. Each person brings his/her unique
perspective and job search experience and the combination of those viewpoints makes for a
better resume.
Know the organization and your value: Do your research on the companies you are
applying to – know the mission of the company, understand the position(s) you are
interested in, and ensure that your resume reflects how and why you are a valuable addition
to a particular company. Resumes are not a “one size fits all” proposition. Be prepared to
develop more than one version of your resume, tailoring it to the various needs of the
companies in which you’re interested.
Stand out by connecting: Follow up with the recruiter two to three days after your initial
contact or chat session. Developing a personal relationship with the recruiter is important,
otherwise you risk becoming just another applicant. The personal relationship you develop
with the recruiter might very well pay off in the future if another position opens up that you
are a good fit for and the recruiter remembers your qualifications and skillset.”
We hope you’ll join us for our next virtual career fair and put these
recommendations into practice. It is important to prepare for your job
search prior to graduation. If you need any guidance, we have career
coaches and services available to help. Contact us to schedule a
career coaching session or to learn more about this upcoming VCF.
We also want to promote your success, so if you have obtained a new
internship, job, or promotion, please click the button to the right to
share your career story!

Student Spotlight on Major Kristofer Padilla: Awarded Fellowship to Engagein Language Study
A “first-of-its-kind-program,” the Mike Mansfield Fellowship
aims to promote relations between the U.S. and Japan by
allowing federal employees to engage in Japanese language
study and develop a rich understanding of the government and
its culture through a year-long opportunity to work, and live
abroad. As a two-year fellowship, which combines rigorous
language training and first-hand experience, the Mike Mansfield
Fellowship is both highly competitive and prestigious.
In short, the program is seemingly tailor made for graduate global history student, Maj. Kristofer
Padilla. Maj. Padilla has shown an interest in Asian studies, particularly in the study of Japanese
culture and language, throughout his academic and professional career, from his undergraduate
degree in history with minors in political science and Asian studies, to his graduate studies. While
studying at Colorado State University for his B.A., Maj. Padilla had the opportunity to engage in the
study of the Japanese language and spend four weeks participating in a “summer home stay in
Japan.” After graduating cum laude, Maj. Padilla started a distinguished career in the US Air Force.
A top third graduate from the USAF Squadron Officer School, who as an F-16 pilot saw operational
tours in Japan and the Republic of Korea; as well as served as an F-16 instructor pilot at Luke Air
Force Base, AZ.
Maj. Padilla hopes to use his experience as a launching pad to enter into a career as a “USAF
Regional Affairs Specialist (RAS)…possibly performing RAS duties as a staff officer in Japan,
allowing me to immediately apply the skills, experiences, and networking developed during the
course of this Fellowship.” Maj. Padilla explains that, while overseas, he “will almost certainly spend
time working in the Japanese Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs in addition to the Japan Air
Self Defense Force.” In doing so, he hopes to learn about “Japanese operational and strategic
decision and policy-making vis-à-vis Japanese regional security issues, multi-lateral inter-
operability, and Japan Self Defense Force operations.”
Among those who have played a pivotal role in helping him to secure the Fellowship, Maj. Padilla
notes, “I’d like to thank to my family, especially my wife; my USAF chain of command (specifically
Lt. Col. David Drichta, Colonel Richard Murphy, and Major General Mark Solo); and my mentors Dr.
Robert Lawrence and Mr. John Albright for their support throughout the application process.” He
adds that, “I am also very thankful to the Mansfield Foundation and the Embassy of Japan for their
on-going support in developing his fellowship plan, and to Diplomatic Language Services for the
terrific language training.”
If you are a federal employee interested in the Mike Mansfield Fellowship, you may visit this site or
contact us for additional information.

Alumni Spotlight on Oblap Franciscus Mejia: Authors Book on IntelligenceStudies
The seasons are changing, weather is getting colder, and many of us
are spending more time trapped indoors—what a great reason to read
Oblap Franciscus Mejia’s new book, The Sheqel. So curl up in the
warmth of your favorite chair and feed your mind with a book that
challenges students and alumni in what Mejia describes as, “a
compilation of research that breaks the eggshell of modern intelligence
studies.”
Oblap Franciscus Mejia, a recent 2011 graduate in Intelligence Studies from AMU, has written his
first book, a trade paperback book entitled, The Sheqel: A Strategic Intelligence Manuscript. This
interesting book utilizes traditional intelligence studies research in conjunction with the fields of
psychology, biology, law, and advanced technical studies that “includes a concentration of concepts
encircling the history and understanding of everyday common dialogues.” It presents an easy-to-
understand approach for novices in intelligence studies to grasp, helping readers understand key
analytical tools as well as shakes in the foundation of traditional intelligence studies’ thought.
The Sheqel, unique in its delivery, utilizes insightful strategic stories that work as representative
allegories to Oblap’s academic discourse. This confluence of interdisciplinary research and strategic
stories results in a unique book, which Oblap believes, will inspire a revolution in intelligence
studies.
Oblap also hopes his book will inspire his fellow graduates and academics to explore new areas of
thought. He also notes that “the process was quite satisfying for me and other assistants with
whom I worked, as they presented inspirational comments as well as illustrative elements that
suggested to me that the understanding of intelligence studies is not an invisible subject in the
American communities.”
Oblap is currently working on research for his second book, The Awakening Layman: A Departed
Unremitting, which “intends to provide another impact in the popular global security solution and
the societal push to back confidence.” He has plans on joining the American Society of Journalists
and Authors after his second book is published in 2012. His current book, The Sheqel: A Strategic
Intelligence Manuscript is now available for purchase through Dog Ear Publishing.

Faculty Spotlight on Dr. Larry Flegle: Inducted into the Florida Radio Hall ofFame
Earlier this year, Dr. Larry Flegle was nominated for induction
into the Florida Radio Hall of Fame. Dr. Flegle began his career
with our university in 2000 and in 2009 founded AMU Radio –
The Golden Hawk, out of a desire to give online students a
college radio station. Since then, AMU Radio has received
national recognition from the Intercollegiate Broadcasting
System and has been awarded both the Platinum Mic Award and
the Golden Mic Award.
In response to his potential induction into the Florida Radio Hall of Fame, Dr. Flegle said, “I am
greatly humbled. Florida has produced so many greats of radio broadcasting, including some of my
favorites – Rick Shaw of WQAM Miami, Bill Vermillion of WLOF Orlando and Jim Maloy of WQYK
Tampa. These gentlemen are also nominees and it is awesome to be included with people I so
highly respect, especially Jim Maloy who hired me in 1974.” The finalists will be announced in May
2012.
In the coming year, Dr. Flegle wants to encourage professors and students to produce programs for
airing on AMU Radio. “The focus is on educational programs, however music is also a major part of
our programming. The music played is classic rock and I am planning on several contemporary rock
nights, as well as at least four jazz weekends. In addition, I am working with program director
Brian Freeland on a call-in show about careers in sports, with hopes to do several other job related
programs with other program directors.”
