To Rise Above, to be better tomorrow than we

are today. Crowder College reflects our efforts

to Rise Above as enrollment, capital projects

and scholarship awards continue to grow.

Crowder is celebrating 50 years of educational

services to the citizens of southwest Missouri.

We hope you will join us for the next 50 years,

as we continue to help students Rise Above their

personal best and achieve their dreams.

Enrollment for fall 2012 was 5,590 students

with 3,466 full-time – 62% of our student body.

Out of those 5,590, 64% were age 24 and under.

In 2012 there were 45 different countries

represented at Crowder College!

When the state drew the regional lines for

community colleges, we were charged with not

only our taxing districts of Newton and

McDonald counties, but a nine county service

district which includes: Barry, Jasper, Cedar,

Dade, Lawrence, Barton and Vernon counties.

Location, location, location seems to be a

driving factor in student attendance as many

students will enroll for classes at multiple sites

within the same semester! Centers in Cassville,

Webb City, Nevada and McDonald County and

satellite sites in Carthage, Greenfield, Lamar,

Monett and Mt. Vernon have proven to be of

great benefit to the service region. Location

does matter!

Even with all of the successes and challenges

Crowder has faced, we continue to maintain one

of the lowest tuition rates in the state at $78 per

credit hour for in-district residents. Starting in

the fall of 2013, the Board of Trustees voted to

eliminate out-of-state tuition. This gives

Crowder an opportunity to competitively serve

students in neighboring states and across the

country.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Crowder Friends:

I am honored and delighted to be serving as

interim president for the 2013-2014 academic

year and am so impressed by your generosity

and by the great work the Foundation has done

since I left the college nine years ago. During

that nine years I have had an opportunity to

work with community colleges across the

United States, an

experience that has

reinforced what a great

college Crowder is, and

how fortunate we are to

have the support we receive

from our community and

college friends.

That experience has also helped me understand

what a critical point we have reached as a nation

in terms of our need to develop a better

educated citizenry. Providing richer and

broader opportunities for those in our region to

gain additional education and improve job skills

may be the most important single action we can

take to secure our economic and cultural future.

We are so grateful for the assistance you

provide through your Foundation gifts, and we

continue to pledge that we will use those

contributions wisely. Thank you on behalf of

the students, faculty and staff at Crowder for

helping us continue to be a leader in education

and job readiness in the Four State area.

Kent A. Farnsworth

Interim President

Mission Statement

Crowder College...building a civil,

serving, literate, learning community

of responsible citizens.

Dear Membership and Friends of

Crowder College:

It is indeed an honor to present to you the 2012-

2013 Annual Report to the Membership of

the Crowder College Foundation. This has

been an unprecedented year for the College and

the Foundation. As a member of the first class

of the College, I have been privileged to watch

the evolution over the past fifty years and I am

very proud to call Crowder my alma mater.

This past year we closed the books with the

largest fund balance in the Foundation’s history;

we provided more scholarships to more students

than ever before; and held the 10th Festival of

Wreaths that grossed

over $80,000. All of

this in spite of a pitiful

economy with the

worst interest rates in

history.

We completed our goal

on the McDonald

County capital

campaign. Many said it

would never happen,

but we did it. The contractor has a projected

completion date of December 15 and we are

planning classes to begin in January. I intend to

be there in my Crowder shirt to welcome them

on that very first day.

Because of a generous lead donation, we are

well on the way to completing our fundraising

goal for our new campus expansion and

renovation in Webb City, additional space that

we have needed for quite some time. That

project is well underway and should be

completed within this next year. Plans are also

in the works for more student-housing on the

Neosho campus.

YOU are the driving force behind these

accomplishments. You have continued to be

faithful to the Crowder College Foundation and

the principles for which it stands—to build a

civil, serving, literate, learning community of

responsible citizens. If we can continue to strive

to do that as well as maintain our fiduciary

responsibility to be the very best stewards of the

funds with which we are entrusted, we will

continue to have record breaking years and

effectively make a difference in our corner of

the world.

Thank you for giving and for believing that we

can make a difference.

What a great opportunity to recognize Dr. Alan

Marble who served Crowder College in various

capacities from 1986 to 2012. Immediately prior

to assuming the role of Interim President in

2006 and President in 2007, he served as Dean

of Business and Support Services with

responsibility for every aspect of the roughly

$30 million organizational budget. As part of

that role he was responsible for Development

including both private fund raising and

supervision of the Grants Office. He began

employment at Crowder College in 1986 as the

Director of Continuing Education. His

educational background includes attending

Crowder before graduating from Missouri

Southern State University with a B.A. degree in

Psychology. He received his Master’s degree in

Psychology from Pittsburg State University,

Kansas. He holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education

Administration from the University of Nebraska

– Lincoln. He has won numerous awards and

accolades over the years but prefers to look

forward to future challenges rather than back on

prior achievements.

While serving as president of the college,

Crowder became one of the fastest growing

colleges in Missouri, with enrollment nearly

doubling in six years. Several building projects

were completed including the Arnold Farber

Building, Tatum Bell Tower, Davidson Hall,

and the MARET Center.

From an academic perspective, cooperative

agreements to offer Bachelor’s completion

programs with MSSU and MSU were also

implemented during his tenure. Dual credit

programs with area high schools have grown to

span the nine county service district. An

Associate of Arts degree program in Applied

Behavior Analysis has evolved into an

important resource for the community. And,

most recently, the opportunity for completion of

an Associate of Arts degree during high school

was introduced with the Carthage R-9 School

District.

Crowder was named Best Place to Work by the

Tri-State Business Journal and one of the

nation’s top 120 community colleges by the

Aspen institute under Dr. Marble’s tenure.

“I can’t imagine how a greater group of

professionals could be assembled… you are

simply the best and I will miss marching in step

with you every day. But, I fully expect this

parade to keep moving forward with vigor and

joy. Keep up the great work and may God bless

each of you beyond measure,” said Marble.

Dr. Marble resides in Neosho with his wife,

Lori, and twin boys, Logan and Dexter. His

daughter, Jessica, is currently working on her

graduate degree and recently married Caleb

Powell.

Upon retirement from the College in June 2013,

Dr. Marble entered a new phase of his career as

Interim President of Missouri Southern State

University.

McDONALD COUNTY—James B. Tatum Center

Fundraising is complete on the McDonald

County Campus, however, naming opportunities

still exist. Construction crews broke ground in

April 2013 and as of July 31, 2013 red iron and

steel framing were quite visible from I-49.

Classes are scheduled to begin at the new

location in January 2014. Thanks to a grant

from the U.S. Department of Labor, the

Crowder College-McDonald County nurses

have already completed a full year of nursing

program classes at the temporary location with

very little out-of-pocket costs. It is not just the

nursing program that will benefit from the new

location, but full-time general education degree

seeking students will also have the opportunity

to complete their degree with the inclusion of

online classes.

WEBB CITY CAMPUS EXPANSION

Groundbreaking for construction of the new

Webb City Campus began in June 2013. The

new building will add 22,000 square feet to the

10,000 square foot current facility and will

include a 9,000 square foot tornado safe room

able to withstand an EF-5 tornado. This safe

room will provide students, staff and

community residents protection from dangerous

storms and function as usable classroom space.

A capital fundraising campaign is underway

with a goal of $1.5 million to be raised in

private donations. Donors Jim and Treva

Dawson have pledged $900,000, with $300,000

for the required FEMA match and $600,000 of

it to match additional donations from private

citizens, business, industry and the Crowder

College Foundation. Mr. and Mrs. Dawson were

first generation college students in their families

and they understand and value the importance

of education and what Crowder has done for

Webb City and the surrounding communities.

More than half of the $1.5 million has been

pledged.

Additional support is needed. If you or someone

you know would like to participate, please

contact the Foundation Office. The building is

scheduled to open for the Fall 2014 semester.

Foundation scholarship recipients and their

families packed the Sneller Gymnasium for

the 24th Annual Scholarship Banquet. What a

great opportunity for donors to get to know the

recipients on a more personal level, and for the

students to be able to put faces to names and

express gratitude for their scholarships.

New Scholarship 2012:

The Irma Lipe Ag Travel Seminar was

established by the Denison, Lipe & Welch

families in honor of their mother, Irma Lipe.

The scholarship will go to one student that

needs financial assistance to attend the

Agriculture Travel Seminar.

In 2012-2013, Crowder College Foundation

awarded 247 students $189,755.66.

Requirements vary by scholarship, but most

generally require a 2.5 GPA and 12 credit

hours per semester. Amounts range from $50

to full tuition. The Foundation oversees more

than 100 active scholarship accounts.

Scholarship recipients are required to

complete 2 hours of community/college

volunteer hours. The goal is to encourage

students to understand the joy of giving back

in some capacity what has been graciously

given to them.

This year marked the 10th Anniversary of the

little wreath fundraiser that began with just 10

wreaths and one BIG dream. With over 430

auction items, the 10th Annual Festival of

Wreaths did Rise Above previous years with

gross donations of over $80,000.

Auction software management company,

BidPal, was contracted to implement an

electronic bid and checkout process. The

addition of BidPal to the auction made bidding

easy for our guests and increased efficiency in

check-in and check-out procedures. Bidders had

the option of paying with a credit card on their

handheld for faster check-out!

Participants enjoyed the electronic process and

the option to remain comfortably seated, enjoy

dinner and the live auction while at the same

time keeping tabs on their Silent Auction items!

Significant funds from this year’s auction will

be matched by the current Department of

Education Title III endowment program. The

FOW funds and match will be endowed for 20

years, an investment in our future support of

scholarships. Festival of Wreaths scholarships

for the 2012-2013 academic year were awarded

to 35 students totaling $15,850.

Evening of Jazz began as a way for the

Foundation to reach out to friends in the

community. Over the years, it has grown into a

chance for us to celebrate our successes with

our members and new friends.

The Crowder Jazz Orchestra, formed in 2005,

grew out of a love for traditional big band jazz

music and a need for a community-based

ensemble in the Crowder College service

region. The 18 piece band presents repertoire

ranging from classic jazz standards to

arrangements by today’s leading big band

composers and arrangers. CJO connects with

audiences of all musical genres and often

presents public concerts in tandem with

educational outreach events.

The Crowder Jazz Orchestra is comprised of

community and professional musicians, which

includes members that collectively have played

with musical greats such as Aretha Franklin,

Ben Vereen, Doc Severinsen, Joe Williams,

Henry Mancini, Wayne Newton, the Woody

Herman Orchestra, and Bob Mintzer.

Per popular demand, an Evening of Jazz was

presented in Carthage in October 2012.

Events such as this establish opportunities to

build relationships, make new friends and, as a

result, increase the Foundation membership.

Thus, increasing scholarship funds, capital

building funds and general financial support for

Crowder College.

2012 OUTSTANDING ALUMNI Born in 1954 in Bentonville, AR, Mark Armstrong has been a resident of Pineville, MO his entire life except for 18 months while in college at MSSC. A 1973 graduate of McDonald County High School and 1975 graduate of Crowder College, Mark decided to continue his education at Missouri Southern State University (formerly College) with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Finance.

He met his wife Barbi in the 5th grade. She was an Anderson cheerleader and he was a Pineville Blackhawk athlete. They started dating their junior year in high school and were married in 1974. They have two sons, Tony Armstrong of Joplin, MO and Tyler Armstrong of Lee Summit, MO. His mother, Natalie Armstrong, lives just across the street from Mark and Barbi. His older brother, Steve Armstrong, is a doctor in Springfield, MO and his younger sister D'Ann Dennis, is the Director of Nursing at Crowder College. Mark and Barbi have two beautiful grandbabies, Brody Mac Armstrong (Mac coming from his great grandfather Bill "Mac" McCracken) and Ashlynn Rose Armstrong.

Following in his Grandfather's and Father's footsteps, his banking career started when he was just 14. His father, Dale Armstrong, president of the bank, hired Mark to file checks paying him $3 per week. He worked part time for the First National Bank of Joplin while he was completing his education at Missouri Southern. While at First National the president of the bank assigned him a different job every 90 days. From teller to proof operator

and finally to loan collections, he was given many learning opportunities. He was ready to get back to Pineville, transferring to the Pineville Branch he started in the loan department to be a loan officer. He was promoted to vice president in 1986 and also became branch manager in 2005. Today it is US Bank and Mark is the Pineville branch manager. After 37 years in the banking business, Armstrong says, “I learn something new everyday.”

His favorite "hobby" is to spend time with Brody Mac and Ashlynn Rose, overshadowing former favorites of hunting, fishing, golf and mountain climbing!

New Public Management Degree

This new program offered in fall 2013 will

prepare students for careers in local, state, and

federal government administration. An

Associate of Arts degree in Public Management

would also benefit those interested in public

service and non-profit organizations. Businesses

that receive grants or governmental support

would be prime employment opportunities for

graduates. The program was made possible

through a Public Safety Project grant that

Crowder obtained last year. The grant includes

Fire Science, Criminal Justice and Emergency

Medical Services along with the Public

Management program. The Public Management

degree is designed to allow students to transfer

to a four year university and complete a

bachelor’s degree in public management. An

articulation agreement with an area university is

under review.

MINUTES OF THE CROWDER COLLEGE FOUNDATION

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

August 12, 2013

Wright Conference Center-Farber Building

Dinner:

Gary Jones and the Great Western Dining Staff served dinner to the membership at 5:30 PM.

Welcome, Introductions, and Call to Order

President Jim Armstrong welcomed eighty-eight Foundation members to the Crowder College Wright Conference

Center, recognizing the Board of Trustees and the Foundation Directors. The Annual Meeting was called to order

at 6:08 PM. President Armstrong stated it had been a fantastic year with our focus on two projects: McDonald

County and Webb City Expansion.

Invocation

Larry Vancuren, McDonald County Foundation Board member, gave the invocation.

Opening Remarks

Dr. Kent Farnsworth, Crowder College Interim President, gave opening remarks showing appreciation to each of

our members; Representative Bill Lant and Representative Bill Reiboldt for representing our area so well; Great

Western Dining Staff for the dinner before the meeting; and the Board of Trustees.

Development Office Update

Cindy Branscum, Director of Institutional Advancement, thanked Pam Hudson, former Director of Development,

for her assistance over the past couple weeks in making the job transition a smooth process, especially with her

new leadership assignment in opening the McDonald County campus. Branscum stated it was hard to express

enough gratitude for each contribution to the Foundation. Branscum thanked the members for helping raise our

own leaders by believing in the Foundation and the students.

Annual Foundation Membership Meeting and Reports

Annual Report

Kim Ramsay, Foundation stand-in Treasurer asked the members to please review the Financial Reports in the An-

nual Report. Ramsay reported it had been an incredible year; earnings have been increasing, assets have grown as

a result of receivables for the McDonald County and Webb City building projects and community support.

Motion to Approve Board Actions

Wayne Paul MOTIONED to approve Board of Directors’ actions for the past year and seconded by Vicki Babbitt

and duly carried.

Milestones

President Armstrong presented milestone certificates to donors who reached a new “milestone” in giving of

$2,500 or more.

Election Results & Introduction of New Foundation Board Members

President Armstrong reported the results of the election of new Board members and officers of the Board. The fol-

lowing were elected to serve for the upcoming four years: Vance Keaton, McDonald County and Scott Wade,

Newton County.

Officers for the 2013-2014 Board include Jim Armstrong, President; Bob Brumley, Vice President of McDonald

County; Kevin Wilson, Vice President of Newton County; Kelly Walters, Treasurer; and Cindy Branscum,

Secretary.

Distinguished Service Award

Bob Brumley presented Dr. Alan Marble with the Distinguished Service award. Brumley highlighted Dr. Marble’s

involvement in the community and how Marble was so successful as President of Crowder College for seven years

because he had a vision and passion of what an institution should look like. An engraved brick was present to Dr.

Marble and another brick will be placed in the courtyard honoring Marble’s service.

Closing Remarks

Dr. Kent Farnsworth gave closing remarks in which he shared why Crowder College is so important in this region.

Farnsworth shared that colleges are the most important part of a community in three areas: developing the econo-

my, culture and society. The most important thing we can do for our economic future is to invest in education. He

thanked each donor for making Crowder a wonderful college and for being our support and backbone.
