News Letter September 2018

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,Greetings to you all in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.God’s own Country, Kerala, was undergoing the worst flood in a century last month. The visuals were so numbing. The magnitude of destruction is incomprehensible. So many of our relatives and friends were in dire straits. Tragedy is very random and chaotic. The water flow devastated their dreams, their houses, their dear ones and even their hearts. The only word echoed in the air was help me.The flood in Kerala saw a unique rescue operation, which is going to be an important case study world wide for people in the disaster management. The fishermen from coastal villages volunteered to the flood affected areas for rescue operations with their boats. The district administration, Disaster Management Team, Indian Coast Guard, Police, Indian Air force, Indian Navy, Youths and volunteers from all over the country rushed into the flood affected areas. They rescued thousands of lives from the high risk disaster zone. Despite the damages to their own fibre boats, outboard engines, minor to major injuries to the fishermen, they are swimming against all odds with a mission fuelled by passion and commitment to save thousands of lives.“I wasn’t concerned about my life; my priority was their life” said Jaisal K.P a fisherman from Malappuram who lean down and allowed the flood victims to step on his back to embark a boat on flooded ground. It is a real picture of compassion and commitment. A BIG SALUTE!I whole heartedly appreciate Immanuel family to respond to this need spontaneously. Let us join our hands together to rebuild Kerala. Mar Thoma Church observes Sevika Sanghom Day and Senior Citizens Day in the month of September. Our parish celebrate the second Sunday as the Day of Sevika Sangham based on the theme: “Women: Partners in God’s Liberation.” Our Sevika Sanghom members deserve appreciation for their humble efforts in support of our parish programmes and activities. “Hagar Nite” is a program with a commitment. It is to help the helpless widows to rebuild their lives. Let us join with them to be the voice of the voiceless in this centenary year of the Mar Thoma Suvishesha Sevikasangam.

Due to varied reasons majority of children move away from their old age parents. Hence, both feel a scene of detachment. But to a great extent this can be overcome by certain deliberate and meaningful efforts. Often big problems are solved with simple solutions. The simple solutions are the best solutions and complex solutions may lead to more complexities. The main reason for the negative feeling associated with moving is, not physical but mental and psychological. This is very simple to understand. What matters here is relationship, togetherness and mental proximity. Whether we are far or near, we should ensure at least 4 things our parents deserve. They should feel your acknowledgement:1. That they are accepted (not sympathy but acceptance)2. That they are respected (not charity but, respect)3. That they are wanted (not that they want you but you genuinely want them)4. That they are loved & cared for their needs (do repay the debt of love only with love)Exo. 20:12There are many reasons why we should ensure these acknowledgements. Even if you forget all the other reasons, you must remember two: They are your parents & you are their Child. You are enjoying the fruits of their yesterday’s physical labour and the blessings of their yesterday’s spiritual labour (their prayerful tears and tearful prayers). The diocese of North America and Europe is proceeding with the purchase of The Mount Carmel Christian Church, 6015 Old Stone Mountain Road, Atlanta for the use of the Diocese. Diocesan Assembly of the diocese of North America and Europe that met on July 4th & 5th, 2018 at Houston had decided to purchase this facility for the use of the Diocese for$ 6.25 million. The Diocese envisions to develop the following programs at ‘The Carmel Mar Thoma Center’ Atlanta. Family Enrichment Programs, Spiritual Development Programs, Clergy and Laity Refresher Courses, Retirement Homes, Publication Center and Diocesan Convention Center. The total area of the property comprises 42 acres of land with 111,820 square feet of buildings. This will help our Diocese to have a second phase development for the future of the Church. Please pray and contribute for the Atlanta project of our Diocese.May the good Lord guide and equip us to move foreword in the most effective way.

History of Labor DayLabor Day: What it MeansLabor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor DaySome records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to hon-or those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.
