Scheduling Your Coursework It is vital that all doctoral students create a reasonable timeline and understand the approximate sequence of coursework in order to increase the coherence of your program. Here are the guiding principles for choosing courses:

Core Doctoral Courses in Our Department

• EDG 7938, Doctoral Seminar, must be taken as soon as possible after being admitted. In this course, you analyze research studies and dissertations

• EDG 7250, Constructing Models of Curriculum, should be taken fairly early in your program. This course gives you a historical and philosophical understanding of curriculum, and enables you to understand different ways to conceptualize curriculum.

• EDF 7758, Trends in Analyzing Instructional Practices, should be taken fairly early in your program, before EDF 7917 if possible. In this course, you will examine research about instructional practices and analyze your own practice.

• EDF 7917, Instructional Policies and the Teaching Profession, should be taken after the just-mentioned core courses in your program. This course focuses on policy and professional development.

• EDG 7944, Research in Curriculum and Instruction, must be taken in your next-to-last or last semester of coursework. In this course, you write your literature review for the dissertation and analyze curriculum research from other nations.

Other Curriculum and Instruction Courses

EDG 6224, EDG 6253, and EDG 6285 may be mandated by your Program Advisor as courses to take early, as part of the “Exploratory Electives” in your program. These courses are taken if you do not have prior graduate-level curriculum, instruction, and program evaluation coursework.

Other Research Courses

STA 6113, Educational Statistics, should be taken early in your program, by any student who has not taken a graduate-level statistics course before entering the program.

STA 7114, Advanced Statistics, should be taken during the mid-point of your program.

EDA 6415, Introduction to Qualitative Inquiry, should be taken during the mid-point of your program.

EDA 7416, Advanced Qualitative Inquiry, is a course we strongly encourage you to take although it is not a requirement. You should enroll in this course toward the end of your program. EDG 7482, Advanced Research, must be taken in your last semester of coursework. This is the course in which you write a draft of your Dissertation Proposal.

EDF 6918, Action Research in Schools and Communities. This course is designed for students interested in collaborative planning for action research based on their own inquiry questions about their own classrooms.

The next chart shows doctoral core courses and other Curriculum and Instruction courses that will be offered in Spring 2011. Please be sure to consult each semester with your Program Advisor about the courses you wish to register for, and your timeline for the program. Please be aware that the courses listed below are subject to change.

CCEI Research Brown Bag The Department of Curriculum, Culture, and Educational Inquiry (CCEI) has been organizing Research Brown Bags with a view to encouraging research initiatives and scholarly work among students and faculty. The brown bags feature two presentations – (generally) one by a graduate student and one by a CCEI faculty. Each presentation is about 30 minutes long followed by Q&A. In the past, many interesting topics have been discussed such as student-centered learning, multicultural curriculum, environmental education, motivation, and “colorism” in children’s books. It is an indispensible opportunity for graduate students who want to pursue their career in education.

Plan of Study The document which now must be turned in to the college and university is the Plan of Study, which is located on the website for the Graduate College. Here is the link for that document: http://wise.fau.edu/graduate/currentstudents/doctoral/pdf/FORM_5_Plan_of_Study_for_the_Doctoral_Degree_Form_II_INS.pdf This document is a PDF file that must be typed, except for the signatures. The form is created in a format that allows you to type the information on your computer. The Graduate College has posted updated forms on their website http://wise.fau.edu/graduate/currentstudents/graduateforms/index.php Visit the website before you submit a plan of study. If you have any questions about the process, contact your Program Advisor. TIP – print your transcript before filling out your plan of study.

Independent Study Process In order to work on an independent study, you should make a proposal to a professor based on what you want to learn. You and your professor will work together to create the format for your study. Together, you complete the “Proposal for Directed Independent Study” form. Turn the completed and signed form to the departmental office in ED 353. In addition the instructor needs to email the office staff issuing permission to add you to the directed independent study.

Doctoral Dissertation Concept Paper In order to help our doctoral students begin to organize their thoughts on dissertation research, we suggest that students and their Dissertation Chairs prepare a concise statement of research intent. This document will help the student begin to answer important questions about what they will research and how they might carry out their study. This document will also help professors make an informed decision when students ask them to serve on a Dissertation Committee. See your Dissertation Chair for the suggested format.
