Letters and numbers
TELEVISION
By DIANNE BUTLER
GEE, I’m kicking myself Imissed the big Letters and
Numbers season-two finaleon Friday night.
Apparently, it wentdown to the wire. Tonywalked away with thecrown. It was the math thatgot him over the line, ac-cording to Lily Serna, themath head on the show.
But there’s no long,princess-like hiatus forthese people — it’s straightinto the third series.
David Astle, the Letterspart of Letters and Num-
bers, has a little storyabout the word three. Thisis such a funny old show.
I’m not familiar with thecarry-over champ, Andrethe roof-plumbing special-ist. You may be, though, ifyou watch this regularly.
He’s been ‘‘trying out afew things’’, he tells hostRichard Morecroft. Doeshe just mean something todo with downpiping? Butthen I think maybe he’stalking about consonantsand vowels.
Do they have a systemgoing, these contestants?Maybe you would do someresearch, if there were abig dictionary and pridewere at stake. The mathtypes, they’d definitelyhave a formula.
The other player tonight,Jenny, is a girl who wearsglasses and studies engin-eering and science, andcan get a Rubik’s cube outin 42 seconds.
