Suburbanites Laurence (an estate agent) and Beverly are entertaining theirnew neighbours. Angela and Tony (computer operator, ex-footballer) todrinks and snacks. Also invited is Susan, whose teenage daughter is givinga party at which her mother would be less than welcome. At first, good-will,cliches and fatuous small-talk ahOlmd; but the sense ofgrowing marital strainbetween Beverly and Laurence, Susan's growing anxiety llS to what is hap­pening at her daughter's party (increasingly evident through the sound ofrock music penetrating the room), and the supreme tactlessness ofV8liousremarks by Beverly and Angela generate a rising tension which finally snaps.Horrific reality breaks into their smug suburban world as Laurence has afatal heart-attack.
