Before You Use This FirearmIt is very important that you read andunderstand this manual before using yournew rifle. Warnings should be read andheeded carefully. Also follow the safetyrules listed in “Marlin's Guide to GunSafety”, printed in this manual.

•WARNING: Marlin firearms are designedand manufactured to handle standardfactory-loaded ammunition which con-forms to SAAMI (Sporting Arms andAmmunition Manufacturers’ Institute Inc.)standards with dependability and safety.Due to the many bullet and load optionsavailable, the element of judgementinvolved, the skill required, and the factthat serious injuries have resulted fromdangerous handloads, Marlin does notmake any recommendations with regardto handloaded ammunition.

Use of the Offset Hammer SpurA detachable offset hammer spur, fixed tothe hammer, must be used when using ascope. An offset hammer spur and wrenchwere packed with your gun (in the envelopecontaining the adapter base). For safeoperation when using a scope, the offsethammer spur must be installed. Installationinstructions are printed on the envelope, as

well as below. We recommend that youremove the offset hammer spur whennot using a scope. For right hand use, position the offset ham-mer spur so that it protrudes from the rightside of the hammer, slide the offset hammerspur as far forward on the hammer as it willgo, and tighten set screw. For left hand use, mount the offset hammer spur so that it pro-trudes from the left side of the hammer, andtighten set screw. Be sure the set screwtightens into the small notch on either theright or left side of the hammer, and checkregularly to be sure that it is tight.

Safety Features•WARNING: Your rifle is equipped with twosafety devices, which, when used proper-ly, provide an added degree of safety. Before loading your rifle, become familiarwith the operation of the hammer blocksafety and the two hammer positions(FULL COCK and REBOUND/SAFETY),by practicing with the rifle unloaded.

•WARNING: Never disassemble the safe-ty. It has been correctly designed, fittedand tested, and is not reversible. Anymechanical device can fail, however, sonever rely on the safety to justify care-less handling. Never use a firearm with asafety that does not function properly.

1.How to Operate the Hammer Block Safety

The hammer block safety mechanism is around button located at the rear of thereceiver. To put your rifle on SAFE, pushthe safety button from left to right as faras it will go (See A). The safety is now onSAFE and the word SAFE will appeararound the right side of the button. The safest way to carry your rifle when itis loaded, is with the hammer in theRebound/Safety position, and the safetyon SAFE. At all other times the actionshould be open.

To move the safety button to the FIREposition, push it from right to left as far asit will go (See B). A red ring will appeararound the left side of the button as awarning that it is in the FIRE position. Ifthe hammer is pulled all the way back tofull cock, the rifle will be cocked andready to fire.

2.Hammer PositionsA. The Full Cock position of the ham-

mer is when it is at its furthest point fromthe firing pin (See C). If the trigger ispulled when the hammer is in this posi-tion, and the safety button is in the FIREposition, the gun will fire.

FIRE Position

B

B. Your new rifle has a feature knownas a “rebounding hammer”. Each time thetrigger is pulled (with the safety in theFIRE position) the hammer strikes the fir-ing pin, and then automatically“rebounds” to the Rebound/Safety posi-tion (See D).

3. To move the hammer to theRebound/Safety position from the FullCock position, first put the hammerblock safety button on SAFE. The ham-mer may be moved from Full Cock to theRebound/Safety position by firmly holdingthe hammer in the Full Cock position withyour thumb. Keep your thumb on thehammer as you pull the trigger. As soonas you feel the hammer exerting forwardpressure against your thumb, removeyour finger from the trigger and ease thehammer slowly forward to theRebound/Safety position (See E & F). Toresume the Full Cock position, pull thehammer all the way to the rear.

•WARNING: When the hammer is in theRebound/Safety position and the ham-mer block safety is in the FIRE position,if the trigger is held back and the ham-mer is struck, the rifle may fire.

How to Load•WARNING: Never attempt to load yourrifle with ammunition that does not meetthe cartridge designation stamped onthe barrel. Use only clean, dry, factory-loaded ammunition which conforms toindustry standards.

•WARNING: Before loading or firing, always check the bore and chamber to besure they are free of grease, oil, or anyother obstruction. With the action open, and the hammer block safety button onSAFE, look through the barrel to see ifthere is an obstruction. If there is, it mustbe removed before firing. Otherwise, per-sonal injury or damage could result.

•WARNING: This rifle will not functionproperly unless the inner magazine tubeis locked securely in place.

•WARNING: Never add cartridges to apartially loaded tubular magazine.

•WARNING: The following procedure is theonly recommended method of loading.

Loading the MagazineBe sure the bolt is closed (lever closed),the hammer is in the Rebound/Safety posi-tion, the hammer block safety is on SAFEand the rifle is pointed in a safe direction.Turn your rifle upside down and unlock theinner magazine tube by pushing in andturning the knurled locking end knob (SeeG). Keeping your fingers away from themuzzle, pull the inner tube from the outertube until the loading port is exposed.

With the muzzle raised slightly, drop car-tridges into the loading port, bullet endtoward the muzzle (See H). When youhave loaded up to the magazine capacity(26 Shorts, 21 Longs or 19 Long Rifles),slide the tube back in place, turning itslightly to ease passage over the loadedrounds. DO NOT FORCE THE TUBEDOWN. Then rotate the knurled lockingend knob to the locked position. Theinner tube will not lock in place if thenumber of cartridges loaded exceeds themagazine capacity.

Marlin lever action 22 rifles are NOTdesigned for single loading. Always load car-tridges through the tubular magazine asdirected above.

Preparing to Fire

With the rifle pointed in a safe direction, completely open and close the lever onetime, and put the hammer block safety inthe FIRE position. Your rifle is loaded, cocked, and ready to fire.•WARNING: If you do not want to fire atthis point, put the hammer block safetyon SAFE, then return the hammer to theRebound/Safety position. (See D).

How to FireWith the hammer in the Full Cock position, and the safety in the FIRE position, and therifle pointed at the target, squeeze the trig-ger. Work the lever fully open and closedfor each repeat shot. Failure to fully oper-ate the lever can result in a jammed action. If you do not fire all the cartridges in themagazine, be sure to put the hammerblock safety on SAFE, and the hammer inthe Rebound/Safety position until you areready to fire again.

What to do if Rifle Fails to Fire

Misfire

If you have squeezed the trigger and thecartridge does not fire, remain in the shoot-ing position, pointing the gun in a safedirection. Count to 10, then unload the riflecompletely. (See “How to Unload”).

Underpowered Shot

A “squib”, or underpowered shot, shouldnot occur if the ammunition is clean, dry,and factory loaded. You can normally tellif a shot is underpowered by the unusual-ly low sound it makes.

•WARNING: Because the bullet may actu-ally still be in the barrel, you must unloadcompletely and, with the action open, usea cleaning rod to see if there is an obstruc-tion. If there is, it should be removed by aqualified gunsmith. Otherwise, personalinjury or damage could result.

How to UnloadNote: The inner magazine tube mustbe locked in place to unload the rifle.Keeping your fingers away from the trig-ger, with the hammer block safety onSAFE, and with the rifle pointed in a safedirection, manually eject all cartridges byopening and closing the lever, until youare sure the chamber and magazine areempty (See I). The lever must be com-pletely closed and then fully opened toinsure proper feeding and ejection of allcartridges. Then, with the lever in theopen position (bolt to the rear), inspect the

chamber, carrier and magazine carefullyto be sure there are no cartridges left. Then check the magazine inspection porton the left side of the receiver (See J). Ifthe magazine is empty, the red followerwill be visible through this hole. If you donot see the red follower, repeat the abovesteps until you do.

•WARNING: Remember, always keep themuzzle pointed in a safe direction, because until a visual check has beenmade, you must assume that a live roundremains in the chamber, and/or magazine.

SightingYour rifle has been sighted-in and test-fired at the factory. Due to individualshooting characteristics, however, sight-ing should be range verified.

Vertical Correction (Elevation)

To raise the point of impact, raise the rearsight, by moving the sight elevator rearward. To lower the point of impact, lower the rearsight, by moving the sight elevator forward.

Horizontal Correction (Windage)

To move the point of impact to the left, tap the rear sight base to the left. Tomove the point of impact to the right, tapthe rear sight base to the right.

Scope MountingYour rifle is drilled and tapped for scopemounts. They are made by Tasco, Weaver, and others, and are available through yourlocal gun dealer. You may also orderdirectly from Marlin Gun Service. Call1-800-544-8892 for more information.

How to Clean Your Rifle•WARNING: Never attempt to wipe downor clean a loaded firearm. Follow theinstructions under “How to Unload”,before cleaning.

To clean the bore from the breechend, follow this procedure. With the lever closed, the safety on SAFE,and the hammer in the Rebound/Safety

position, loosen the takedown screw untilit is floppy in the receiver (do not try toremove it completely) (See K). Place afolded cloth on the floor or a work bench.Hold the butt section of the rifle firmly andlet the left side of the muzzle strike thecloth (See L). Do not touch the lever. Youmay have to repeat this tapping severaltimes before the two parts of the receiverseparate. You can then remove thebreech bolt by sliding it to the rear as faras it will go, and lifting it out (See M). Thiscompletes the takedown operation. To prevent damage to the ejector whilecleaning, hold it down as far as it will gowith a small screwdriver (See N), and atthe same time insert a second screwdriv-er into the slotted rivet just ahead of theejector (See O). Then turn the rivet slight-
