Case Study: The Mosaic Company
With approx. 9B in annual revenue the Mosaic Company is the world’s largest producer of potash and phosphate fertilizers. Headquartered in Minneapolis MN, Mosaic employs over 9,000 employees globally. Mosaic selected Capgemini to provide cloud architecture, migration and end to end managed services for their virtual data center platform. Initially Amazon Web Services was selected as the future state platform prior to Mosaic finalizing their selection on Azure for IaaS and PaaS services.
Program Objectives: ! Establish a virtual data center framework that will allow Mosaic to migrate the majority or their applications to a PaaS and IaaS platform by 2017. ! Optimize the delivery of IT services resulting cost benchmark against peers aspiring to top quartile. Business Challenges: ! Aging IT Landscape requiring modernization at the compute, storage and networking layers. ! Rapid Growth and demand for new services was challenging IT to meet capacity requirements. ! Existing Processes and Operating Model was not able to take advantage of cloud services. ! IT transitioning to a very lean organization model. Solution ! Development of Architecture standards and policies to enable a Virtual Data Center Framework for cloud ! Heterogeneous Migration of 100 SAP Systems to a End to End Managed Service (Application, Basis, IaaS) ! Migration of approx. 400 applications to a combination of Managed IaaS, PaaS and Self-managed IaaS platform
The Mosaic Company
Benefits ! Improved agility – speed to delivery; capacity elasticity ! Leverage shared resource pools ! Provide capacity elasticity (e.g. demand-driven) ! Deliver self-service management capabilities ! Cost management – ability to lower operational costs in targeted
areas; improve cost predictability & visibility ! Significantly reduce I&O operating costs
! Create a more predictable cost stream aligning to business demand ! Quality of service – access to expert-level services, resources and
technology; ! Deliver 99.7% or higher of production availability ! Enhance DR by delivering processes & technology supporting our
business impact analysis ! Develop “minimal touch” administration for Mosaic support analysts ! Alignment to Mosaic org / optimize support model

Migration Approaches for Azure
! Homogenous Migration (Lift & Shift) − Both operating system and database are the
same in Source and Target System
− Migration performed with block level copy processes
! Heterogeneous System Migration − At least one of the following is changed
during the copy:
• Operating system
• Database system
− Migration process is usually application specific
− Additional testing and verification is required
! Rebuild − Rebuild/Clone of Common Usage Pattern
(App Server, Web Server)
− Limited Transactional Data
