Editorial
The heavy snow in the first week of February will have made many people think that idea of ‘man-made global warming’ is a misunderstanding of nature (they always trot out the old saw that global warming is ‘part of the normal cycle’, not understanding that the rate of change we are experiencing now, has no precedent in millions of years) ...or something made up by those who wish to do down the fossil fuel industry. However, when we look at the bigger picture, we have to accept that climate change really is happening, and not only that, happening at an ever-increasing rate.
So, the rhetorical question I am posing is this: “What are you personally going to do to mitigate the effects of global warming?”
We have to face the fact that successive governments across the globe have failed to ’bite the bullet’ and do anything about this situation. Mealy-mouthed words and promises don’t fix the amount of global warming gases going into the atmosphere. We talk about biomass generation yet the global warming impact of this is possibly worse than what it is meant to replace - due to the transport of biofuels across the oceans and the chopping down of important forests. We are predicted to get many more extreme weather events as time goes on: wetter winters, stronger winds; hotter, drier summers. One only has to look at the horrific effects of forest fires and droughts in different parts of the world to get a foretaste of what we may all have to put up with; if not us, then our children and grandchildren will be the ones to suffer.
Can we do anything on an individual basis, or should we just ‘stick our heads in the sand’ and hope for the best? I’m not sure we can change the way our governments work - they are too much in thrall to the fossil fuel lobby, as shown by the push for fracking to extract gas from under the ground. On a personal basis, we can make sure we are well insulated in our homes, wind and water proof. Burn a little less fuel. Don’t buy stuff that comes on a container ship or plane. If you live near sea level, get a boat!

As usual with the chapel, February has been a quiet month with
our usual services but no events to report. We held an events meeting in January to plan ahead for 2019 and there are some very exciting events ahead for you all to come to.
On 23rd February (after this issue has gone to print) Tabitha hosted a coffee and cake morning for Marie Curie. I am sure it will be well supported and will be reported on in the April magazine.
On 2nd March we are holding our event to support Comic Relief – a beetle drive followed by pancakes so that we incorporate Shrove Tuesday but a little early! Please come along to enjoy the evening
and support Comic Relief - see advertisement below.
Mothering Sunday is 31st March and our young people have arranged a service at 11am to celebrate this day. If you would like
to come to join us on this special Sunday, you will be very welcome.

Lezant Flower and Garden Group’s AGM was held on 16th January to the usual format. Officers remain as last year: Chairman: Mary Crew, Treasurer: Jill Price, Joint Secretaries: Rosemary Buckler and Shirley Ough.
The programme of activities for the coming year was revealed with something to interest everyone. Our February meeting with Robin Hill telling us about his Dartmoor garden will be reported in the April issue of this magazine but please put a note in your diary for our meeting on 20th March when we welcome local flower arranger, Louise Trenerry, who will run a workshop when we will make an Easter floral display. All materials and flowers will be provided so do join us to have some fun in Lezant Church room on that day at 7.30pm.

It's a circular walk of approximately 3 miles and will take about 2 hrs to complete. Starting at the church and heading to Down House, passing Trebullett Hill Mine, Trewarlett, St Lawrence House and back to the church at Lezant. The route includes two separate footpaths and lanes. Please bring your own refreshments.

There is an open meeting on Thursday 14th March at Trebul-lett at 6.30pm for parents, young people and anyone inter-ested, to discuss setting up a Youth Club. We have premises and some equipment but require volunteers to help run this much needed locally-based facility. The format of the meeting will be coming together for networking and exchange of ideas, followed by some formal decisions. Offers of help and any support would be much appreciated. Young people welcome to come and play or join the discussions on the same evening.

GOODBYE CORNISH MAID - In memory of the last of the Treburley Maddevers.
Doreen Wadland, nee Maddever, born 30th October 1929, died 22nd May 2018
Doreen’s family have organised a graveside service on 29th March at 12 noon in Lezant Churchyard for her ashes to be interred where lie her parents, William and Beatrice Maddever. Afterwards, there will be a farewell drink at the Springer Spaniel in Treburley at about 1pm. If you knew Doreen and have memories to share, please feel welcome to join us. Lezant Lunch Club -January 30th 2019

due mainly to ill health and ap-
pointments. Brenda, as usual,
entertained the small group with
one of her anecdotes before the waitresses served everyone with
beef and vegetables. Tasty
sponge pudding and custard
followed before Ann Sheldrake
was introduced to give her talk on her experiences with horses
and disabled people driving a carriage containing their wheelchairs.
Ann has been involved with horses for many years and is an assessor of
trainee drivers of the carriages both when living in Sussex and in this area too.
There were around 600 groups in the U.K., all relying on volunteers who must obey Health and Safety rules, be trained and insured. Before this ruling came
into force the group that Ann was once with had a volunteer who, while not
allowed to handle the horses was given a job of painting a wall. He fell from a
ladder and claimed substantial damages for his injuries. He turned out to be an
ex convict. Four volunteers are needed to load each disabled driver and the wheel chair into the carriage. There is always a shortage of people to help.
The various groups put on shows for the general public. The competitors are
divided into different classes from Novice to the more experienced able to win
rosettes and prestige. The first section in eventing, is Dressage; next, Country
Roads, Coned Tracks and lastly Obstacles. For some time Ann’s horse was called Queenie, which occasionally caused some hilarity, especially when urg-
ing the horse to go faster as she called, “Come on Queenie, come on
Queenie.” Ann has competed against Prince Philip. Once, on a foggy course
she was asking herself how she should complete the course, when a voice be-
hind her explained. It was Prince Philip.
There is a “Riding for the Disabled” group in Tavistock which meets twice a

The February meeting was our AGM. Our president has agreed to carry on for another year but a new vice president, treasurer and secretary were elected, with other members responsible for producing the year's programme of events and press releases. Cups were awarded to members who were overall winners of the monthly competitions. The AGM was followed by a quiz, with the winners receiving chocolate cream eggs.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 13th March 2019 at 7.30 p.m. in the Lezant Church Room, when there will be a talk on "Art in the service of science".
New members are always welcome. If you would like to come along, your first two meetings will be free of charge as tasters.

PARISH TAXI SCHEME
FOR RESIDENTS OF LEZANT PARISH ONLY
The parish council subsidy for the taxi scheme is now £4 per trip, return £4 each way. The fares
charged by Launceston Taxis are as below. As a resident of Lezant Parish, you are entitled to a
subsidy of £4.00 for any taxi journey at any time, so long as a taxi is available. To take advantage of the
scheme the taxi must be pre-booked through Launceston Taxis on 07340 813434. The taxi driver will
have a form that he will complete. You sign the form and pay the reduced rate to the driver. Please note
that the single fares quoted below are for guidance only, if you live outside one of the villages the fare
may differ slightly:

Eg, a return journey from Treburley to Launceston will cost £10 in total. The Parish Council would
encourage all residents to use the taxi whenever possible although it is appreciated that a taxi is not
always available. Pre-booking the day before can sometimes help. Remember, the taxi cannot be
used on a regular basis for commuting between home and work, nor as a school-run vehicle.

Lezant Horticultural Society
This year, the Society's Annual Dinner is on Saturday 2nd March at Trethorne Leisure Park. Tickets are £17.50 each for 2 courses and are available from any committee member. As you all know,
Trethorne do a wonderful carvery,so come along and join us. Vegetarian options are also avail-able. Please ask any committee member for details. The first of our two Prize Draws takes place after the dinner, so come along and join us on the 2nd March for a lovely evening.
Saturday 16th March is our annual Daffodil Show in Lezant Church Rooms. Please have a look in
your garden and enter the Show as it is such a wonderful sight to see all the glorious daffodils after such a gloomy, wet winter. There are 12 classes and I'm sure we all can enter a couple of them at least. Entries should be staged between 10.00 am and 11.15 am on the 16th. All entry forms should be with me by 8.00 pm Wednesday 13th March. You can send them via email, post or by

“Faulty Communications: Living with Istanbul’s Earthquake Threat”
Professor Iain Stewart, Professor of Geoscience Communica-
tion, UNESCO Chair in Geoscience and Society, University of Plymouth and Director of its Sustainable Earth Institute, will talk about Turkey’s North Anatolian Fault which is primed for seismic rupture and it is likely that a future destructive earth-
quake will be within striking distance of Istanbul. So how do you prepare a city of over 13 million people for a potential seis-mic calamity? How do we translate our scientific understanding
of the earthquake hazard into meaningful preparedness and improved safety on the ground? Drawing on examples from
Japan and Italy as well as Turkey, Iain Stewart explores the fault lines between
reason and faith in communicating to at-risk communities the myth of solid
ground.
