15 ans déjà ! Voilà 15 ans que les Sommets du cinéma d’animation invitent au rassemblement du milieu de l’animation. La mission de notre festival : célébrer l’incroyable vitalité et savoir-faire montréalais, présenter le travail des artistes et des professionnels d’ici et d’ailleurs à un public diversifié, provoquer toutes sortes de rencontres fructueuses et renforcer la place de Montréal dans le calendrier des festivals internationaux consacrés à l’animation sous toutes ses formes.

L’édition 2016 des Sommets se caractérise par un dynamisme communicatif et grandissant grâce à nos partenaires enthousiastes et une programmation bonifiée. Nous constatons avec plaisir que notre événement répond à un réel besoin et qu’il suscite l’attention des artisans autant que de l’industrie.

Les Sommets sont la fête de tous.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years  already! 15 years ago, the Sommets du cinéma d’animation brought the animation community together. Our mission: to celebrate Montreal’s amazing vitality and know-how, to showcase the work of local and international artists to a diverse audience, to encourage fruitful encounters of all kinds and to affirm Montreal’s place on the calendar of international festivals devoted to all forms of   animation.

The 2016 edition of the Sommets distinguishes itself through its ever- increasing and infectious energy, thanks to our avid partners and enhanced programming. We are proud to see that our event fulfills a true need and attracts the attention of creators and members of the industry alike.

Je ne sens plus rien présente deux amoureux vivant à l’écart du monde, dans une nacelle haut perchée, et tentant de se rendre utiles alors que tout va de travers partout ailleurs. Une savoureuse satire dessinée, déjantée à souhait, de notre monde en déroute.

I Don’t Feel Anything Anymore is a tale of two lovers who live an isolated life high in the sky, striving to make themselves useful while all is chaos down below. A rich animated satire of life in a world gone off the rails.

Une jeune poète canadienne entreprend un voyage fondateur qui lui en apprend davantage sur ce père iranien dont elle s’était crue abandonnée. Regard sensible et espiègle sur l’histoire familiale, l’identité culturelle et l’essence même de la poésie, ce long métrage d’animation fait appel aux voix de Sandra Oh, Don McKellar, Nancy Kwan et Shohreh Aghdashloo.

A young Canadian poet sets out on the journey of a lifetime as she learns about the Iranian father who she had assumed abandoned her. A sensitive and playful look at family history, cultural identity, and the nature of poetry itself, this animated film features the voices of Sandra Oh, Don McKellar, Nancy Kwan, and Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Après avoir raté le dernier train, une vieille dame, Louise, est con-trainte de rester dans une station balnéaire désertée en cette fin d’été. Le temps rapidement se dégrade, les grandes marées surviennent, condamnant électricité et moyens de communication. Pour survivre, Louise apprivoisera les éléments naturels et la solitude.

After missing the last train of the summer, Louise, an elderly woman, is forced to remain in a deserted seaside town. The weather quickly worsens and tides rise, cutting off all electricity and means of communication. To survive, Louise must accept her envi-ronment and her solitude.

Chris Lavis et Maciek Szczerbowski (Clyde Henry Productions) ont conçu des marionnettes à la fois éblouissantes et extravagantes pour leurs films et vidéos (Madame Tutli-Putli, Cochemare, etc.). Elles sont aussi de véritables œuvres d’art, comme le révèle cette exposition regroupant 40 pièces spectaculaires.

Au fil des ans, la Cinémathèque québécoise a acquis des artefacts du cinéma d’animation ( dessins, marionnettes, correspondance, peintures) en raison de leur valeur docu mentaire ou de leur intérêt esthétique. Cette exposition dévoile bon nombre de pièces  prestigieuses.

Cinéaste d’animation émérite, Diane Obomsawin (Ici par ici, J’aime les filles, etc.) est aussi une artiste accomplie aux talents multiples. Cette exposition permettra de prendre la mesure de la variété de ses talents en bande dessinée, en illustration et en peinture.

Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski (Clyde Henry Productions) have made stunning and elaborate puppets for their films and videos (Madame Tutli-Putli, Cochemare). These creations are also works of art in themselves, as this exhibition of 40  spectacular pieces will attest.

Over the years, the Cinémathèque québécoise has acquired film animation artefacts (including illustrations, puppets, letters and paintings) either for their historical value or for their aesthetic appeal. A  number of notable pieces from our collection will be on display.

In addition to being a distinguished animator, Diane Obomsawin (Here and There, I Like Girls) is also a multi-faceted, accomplished artist. This exhibition will highlight the breadth of her talents as a comic book artist, illustrator and painter.

Diane Obomsawin donnera une leçon de cinéma exceptionnelle d’une durée de cinq heures. En première partie, la réalisatrice de J’aime les filles offrira une présentation commentée de ses films et ses bandes dessinées, tandis que dans une seconde partie, elle invitera le public à parti-ciper à la création d’un GIF animé inspiré de son  humour  légendaire. Lauréate d’un Oscar pour son court métrage d’animation Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase (1992), Joan Gratz est une personnalité de premier plan de l’animation américaine indé pendante. Lors de cette rencontre, cette résidente de Portland, en Oregon, présentera ses films et les secrets de la technique qui a fait sa renommée, la « claypainting » (peinture à la pâte à modeler). An exceptional 5-hour masterclass with Diane  Obomsawin awaits. First, the creator of I Like Girls will present and discuss her film and comic book work. Les ateliers offerts par l’équipe du Festival Stop Motion Montréal permettent aux jeunes animateurs en herbe d’explorer trois techniques d’animation image par image : pâte à modeler, papiers découpés et objets. Encadrés par des animateurs de formation, les enfants sont invités à confectionner des personnages et des accessoires, ou à choisir parmi ceux déjà mis à leur disposition.

The Montreal Stop Motion Festival’s workshops offer budding young animators the chance to explore three frame-by-frame animation techniques: modelling clay, paper cut-outs and objects. Under the guidance of trained animators, children are invited to create their own characters and accessories, or choose among those made available on site.

Ces six jeunes artistes sont les premiers participants aux résidences de mentorat en cinéma d’animation de la Cinémathèque québécoise. Durant six semaines, ils ont développé un projet en profi tant des ressources off ertes par la Cinémathèque et l’ONF tout en étant chacun conseillé par un mentor. Grâce à eux, la Cinémathèque est devenue un laboratoire de création !

Th ese six young artists are the fi rst participants in the Cinémathèque québécoise’s mentored animation residency program. Over the course of six weeks, they have developed their projects using the resources made available to them by the Cinémathèque and the NFB, while each benefi ting from the guidance of a mentor. Th e Cinémathèque can now call itself a creative lab!
