Connoisseurship of Antique Lace- Elizabeth KurellaThe connoisseurs of antique lace and lacy linens can do far more than simply slap a label on a vintage piece-they can

read the clues in the threads to know what makes it special. This class will feature Elizabeth Kurella's unique checklists

to study threads manipulations, how to date and place pieces by design and technique, and how to distinguish between

intrinsic and market values. Participants will work with pieces from the Sweet Briar collection, with some from Eliza-

beth's personal collection, and are encouraged to bring pieces from their own collections for identification, evaluation,

and analysis. Kit fee for this class is $10, paid directly to the teacher.

Elizabeth Kurella is an author and teacher who specializes in the identification and conservation of fine antique

laces and embroidery. Her books include, "Anybody can Mend Lace and Linens ", "Guide to Lace and Linens ",

"The Secrets of Real Lace ", and her new Connoisseur's Guides to VintageLace, including, "A Connoisseur'sGuide to Honiton Lace ", "Whitework Embroidered Lace Handkerchiefs ", and "Normandy Lace Patchworks ". She

lives near Chicago.

Binche Lace-Michael GiusianaThis class will cover Binche techniques at all levels of instruction. Beginners should have experience in Flanders lace

and be proficient at working from color diagrams. Participants in this class will receive all handouts on CDs, including

PDF files of Michael's first two books which are now out of print. Advanced students may elect to begin reconstruction

and design work. Some preparation before the class begins will be necessary for this, and reconstruction students may

find that having their laptop computers with them will be helpful.

Michael Giusiana teaches at Ramstein Middle School in Germany during the school year, and comes home to theUS to teach Flanders and Binche laces during the summer. He has been studying lacemaking and lace reconstruc-

tionfrom some of the finest teachers in Europe, and has written four books with afifth one due out thisfall.

's Gravenmoer Lace-Susan WenzelSusan will be providing instruction in's Gravenmoer Lace on all levels. Those who have never made any's GravenmoerLace will start with a bookmark. The bookmark incorporates many's Gravenmoer techniques including those necessary

to make the now "famous" necklace. If you have completed this bookmark in an earlier workshop you will move onto

the necklace or a mat which incorporates advanced techniques. Those who complete the bookmark during the week may

begin work on a more advanced piece. Class requirements are for a SOLID foundation in Torchon. Knowing how towork a half stitch diamond and trail are a must. Knowledge of gimp use is helpful but not required.

"Susan Wenzel,- AKA "Lacy Susan", has been teaching for 16 years including numerous lOLl charter chapters,

lOLl conventions and professional craft shows. She recently developed her experience in 's Gravenmoer Lace while

studying in Holland under the guidance of a Dutch teacher and made sure to actually visit the town of 's Graven-

moer. Her emphasis on the use of "color" in lacemaking grew out of her experiences in Holland. Susan owns and

operates "Lacy Susan, " a lacemaking, tatting and knitted lace retail supply business carrying one of the most com-

prehensive ranges of supplies of any u.s. suppliers. She will be our vendor during this retreat.
