Chamber music is the music of friends. It is an international language that brings people together, and is, at the same time, one of the richest art forms on earth. It is therefore with tremendous pleasure that we welcome to Lincoln Center, for the second time, our friends and students from the LG Chamber Music School.

Our aim, and the objective of CMS, has always been to bring the beauty and joy of chamber music to audiences and musicians across the globe, and to develop the musical talents and nurture the aspirations of young artists. Since the advent of our collaboration in 2009, it has been the greatest honor to lend our experience to chamber music training in Korea, and to witness the ever-deepening understanding of and love for chamber music shown by the budding young students from the LG Chamber Music School. With such incredible talent and dedication in abundance, the future of chamber music in Korea is certainly a very bright and promising one.

To the students from the LG Chamber Music School: we look forward to once again sharing with you the knowledge, skill, and passion of our CMS artists, and to providing you with an unforgettable and exciting New York cultural experience!

The One and Only Chamber Music Education Program in Korea

LG Chamber Music School is one of LG’s major social contribution activities and was developed together with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) in the United States in order to provide systematic chamber music education to gifted young musicians in Korea. Since its creation in 2009, the LG Chamber Music School has made a great effort to change the traditional focus put on classical music education in Korea, which predominantly favors nurturing soloist musicians, to encourage more talented musicians to embrace this art form early in their lives in order to help them develop into world-class chamber musicians.

The special two-year curriculum for the LG Chamber Music School was expertly arranged through the joint efforts of CMS and LG. Every year the LG Chamber Music School holds auditions for four chamber music instrumental specialties (piano, violin, viola, and cello) and selects around 30 outstanding and musically gifted youth (from grades 5-12). Next, the young musicians go through intensive group lessons (as opposed to individual soloist lessons) under the educational purpose of fostering mature and talented musicians who can also enjoy playing with other professional musicians.

In order to develop these students, LG Arts Center has strived to bring in more than 10 of Korea’s top music teachers as faculty to guide the classes. These teachers (including the school’s current artistic director Professor Ju-Young Baek of the Seoul National University, a renowned violinist) work tirelessly to teach group chamber music lessons and music theory classes every Saturday. They also give special lectures that help the young talented musicians learn leadership skills, communication skills, and the secrets to becoming successful professional musicians. Another special feature of the program is made possible by the special relationship with CMS. In addition to holding master classes and regular concerts, every year, the students meet with artists from CMS (headed by CMS artistic directors, cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han), in order to attend special lessons and workshops that are programed to personally check on students’ developmental progress, and help improve their playing skills.

Over the course of the past eight years, LG Chamber Music School has worked hard to establish a much-needed foundation for chamber music education in Korea, and has produced more than 100 graduates. The school will continue to emphasize the importance of chamber music and its intrinsic virtues of creativity, communication, and interaction in an effort to bring up well-rounded musicians of the next generation.

ABOUT CMSThe Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) is one of eleven constituents of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the largest performing arts complex in the world. Along with other constituents such as the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, Lincoln Center Theater, and The Metropolitan Opera, CMS has its home at Lincoln Center. CMS’ performance venue, Alice Tully Hall, has received international acclaim as one of the world's most exciting venues for chamber music. CMS presents chamber music of every instrumentation, style, and historical period in its extensive concert season in New York, its national and international tours, its many recordings and national radio broadcasts, its broad commissioning program, and its multifaceted educational programs. Demonstrating the belief that the future of chamber music lies in engaging and expanding the audience, CMS has created programs to bring the art of chamber music to audiences from a wide range of backgrounds, ages, and levels of musical knowledge. The artistic core of CMS is a multi-generational, dynamic repertory company of expert chamber musicians who form an evolving musical community. As part of that community, the CMS Two program discovers and weaves into the artistic fabric a select number of highly gifted young artists—individuals and ensembles—who embody the great performance traditions of the past while setting new standards for the future. CMS produces its own recordings on the CMS Studio Recordings label, which has been highly praised for both the artistry and the recorded sound of the eclectic range of repertoire it has released. These recordings are sold on-site at concerts in New York, on tour, and through the CMS website as well as online retailers such as iTunes. The newest media innovation, CMS Live!, offers recordings available only by download of extraordinary live performances chosen by CMS artistic directors David Finckel and Wu Han from among each season’s many concerts. CMS also has a broad range of historic recordings on the Arabesque, Delos, SONY Classical, Telarc, Musical Heritage Society, MusicMasters, and Omega Record Classics labels. Selected live CMS concerts are available for download as part of Deutsche Grammophon’s DG Concerts series. In 2004, CMS appointed cellist David Finckel and pianist Wu Han artistic directors. They succeed founding director Charles Wadsworth (1969-89), Fred Sherry (1989-92), and David Shifrin (1992-2004). Through its Watch Live series, CMS live streams approximately 30 chamber music concerts and events a season to a worldwide audience online. These streams are free to the public and are available on demand for an additional 72 hours after the broadcast. As this venerable institution approaches its 50th anniversary season in 2020, its commitment to artistic excellence and to serving the art of chamber music, in everything that it does, is stronger than ever.
