Replace the battery when itno longer provides acceptableperformance. The battery canbe recharged several hundredtimes before replacement.

Recharge the battery after longperiods of non-use to maximizebattery life.

Battery life will vary dueto usage patterns andenvironmental conditions.

Use of extended backlighting,MEdia Net Browsing, and dataconnectivity kits affect battery

life and talk/standby times. The self-protection function of

the battery cuts the power ofthe phone when its operationis in an abnormal state. In thiscase, remove the battery fromthe phone, reinstall it, and turnthe phone on.

Actual battery life will depend onnetwork configuration, productsettings, usage patterns, batteryand environmental conditions.

Explosion, Shock, and FireHazards Do not put your phone in a

place subject to excessive dustand keep the minimum requireddistance between the powercord and heat sources.

Unplug the power cord priorto cleaning your phone, andclean the power plug pin whenit is dirty.

When using the powerplug, ensure that it is firmlyconnected.

FDA Consumer UpdateThe U.S. Food and Drug

    Administration Centre for Devices

and Radiological Health ConsumerUpdate on Mobile Phones.

    1. Do wireless phones pose ahealth hazard? The available scientific evidencedoes not show that any healthproblems are associated withusing wireless phones. Thereis no proof, however, thatwireless phones are absolutely

safe. Wireless phones emitlow levels of radio frequencyenergy (RF) in the microwaverange while being used. Theyalso emit very low levels of RFwhen in the standby mode.Whereas high levels of RF

can produce health effects (byheating tissue), exposure to lowlevel RF that does not produceheating effects causes noknown adverse health effects. Many studies of low level RFexposures have not found anybiological effects. Some studieshave suggested that somebiological effects may occur, but such findings have notbeen confirmed by additionalresearch. In some cases, other

    Safety Guidelines

  • 7/29/2019 Lg Km555 Manual

    75/98

    73

researchers have had difficultyin reproducing those studies, orin determining the reasons forinconsistent results.

    2. What is the FDAs roleconcerning the safety ofwireless phones?Under the law, the FDA doesnot review the safety ofradiation emitting consumerproducts such as wirelessphones before they can be sold,as it does with new drugs ormedical devices. However, theagency has authority to takeaction if wireless phones areshown to emit radio frequencyenergy (RF) at a level that ishazardous to the user. In sucha case, the FDA could requirethe manufacturers of wireless

phones to notify users of thehealth hazard and to repair, replace, or recall the phones sothat the hazard no longer exists.

Although the existing scientificdata do not justify FDAregulatory actions, the FDA

has urged the wireless phoneindustry to take a number ofsteps, including the following: Support needed research into

    possible biological effectsof RF of the type emitted bywireless phones;

    Design wireless phones in a

way that minimizes any RFexposure to the user thatis not necessary for devicefunction; and

Cooperate in providing usersof wireless phones with the

best possible information onpossible effects of wirelessphone use on human health.

The FDA belongs to aninteragency working groupof the federal agencies thathave responsibility for differentaspects of RF safety to ensurecoordinated efforts at thefederal level. The followingagencies belong to this workinggroup:

large epidemiology studies havebeen published since December2000. Between them, thestudies investigated anypossible association betweenthe use of wireless phones andprimary brain cancer, glioma, meningioma, or acousticneuroma, tumors of the brainor salivary gland, leukemia,or other cancers. None ofthe studies demonstrated theexistence of any harmful healtheffects from wireless phone RFexposures.

However, none of the studiescan answer questions aboutlongterm exposures, since theaverage period of phone use inthese studies was around threeyears.

    5. What research is needed todecide whether RF exposurefrom wireless phones posesa health risk?A combination of laboratorystudies and epidemiological

studies of people actuallyusing wireless phones wouldprovide some of the data thatare needed. Lifetime animalexposure studies could becompleted in a few years. However, very large numbersof animals would be neededto provide reliable proof ofa cancer promoting effect ifone exists. Epidemiologicalstudies can provide data thatis directly applicable to humanpopulations, but 10 or moreyears follow-up may be needed

to provide answers about somehealth effects, such as cancer. This is because the intervalbetween the time of exposureto a cancer-causing agent andthe time tumors develop - ifthey do may be many, many

years. The interpretation ofepidemiological studies ishampered by difficulties inmeasuring actual RF exposureduring day-to-day use ofwireless phones. Many factors

    Safety Guidelines

    79/98

    77

affect this measurement, suchas the angle at which thephone is held, or which modelof phone is used.

    6. What is the FDA doing to findout more about the possiblehealth effects of wirelessphone RF?

The FDA is working withthe U.S. National ToxicologyProgram and with groups ofinvestigators around the worldto ensure that high priorityanimal studies are conductedto address important questionsabout the effects of exposureto radiofrequency energy (RF).The FDA has been a leadingparticipant in the World HealthOrganization InternationalElectromagnetic Fields (EMF)

Project since its inception in1996. An influential resultof this work has been thedevelopment of a detailedagenda of research needs thathas driven the establishment

of new research programsaround the world. The projecthas also helped develop aseries of public informationdocuments on EMF issues. The FDA and the CellularTelecommunications & Internet

Association (CTIA) have aformal Cooperative Researchand Development Agreement(CRADA) to do research onwireless phone safety. TheFDA provides the scientificoversight, obtaining input fromexperts in government, industry,

and academic organizations.CTIAfunded research isconducted through contractswith independent investigators. The initial research will includeboth laboratory studies andstudies of wireless phone

users. The CRADA will alsoinclude a broad assessment ofadditional research needs in thecontext of the latest researchdevelopments around theworld.

    7. How can I find out howmuch radiofrequency energyexposure I can get by usingmy wireless phone? All phones sold in the UnitedStates must comply withFederal CommunicationsCommission (FCC) guidelines

that limit radiofrequency energy(RF) exposures. The FCC established theseguidelines in consultation withthe FDA and the other federalhealth and safety agencies. The FCC limit for RF exposure

from wireless telephones isset at a Specific AbsorptionRate (SAR) of 1.6 watts perkilogram (1.6 W/kg). The FCClimit is consistent with thesafety standards developedby the Institute of Electricaland Electronic Engineering(IEEE) and the National Councilon Radiation Protection andMeasurement. The exposurelimit takes into considerationthe bodys ability to remove

heat from the tissues thatabsorb energy from thewireless phone and is set wellbelow levels known to haveeffects. Manufacturers ofwireless phones must reportthe RF exposure level for eachmodel of phone to the FCC. TheFCC website(http://www.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety)gives directions for locatingthe FCC identification numberon your phone so you can findyour phones RF exposure levelin the online listing.

    8. What has the FDA done tomeasure the radiofrequencyenergy coming from wirelessphones? The Institute of Electrical andElectronic Engineers (IEEE)

is developing a technicalstandard for measuring theradiofrequency energy (RF)exposure from wireless phonesand other wireless handsetswith the participation andleadership of FDA scientists

    81/98

    79

and engineers. The standard,Recommended Practice forDetermining the Spatial- Peak Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)in the Human Body Due toWireless CommunicationsDevices: ExperimentalTechniques, sets forth the firstconsistent test methodologyfor measuring the rate atwhich RF is deposited inthe heads of wireless phoneusers. The test method usesa tissuesimulating model ofthe human head. Standardized

SAR test methodology isexpected to greatly improve theconsistency of measurementsmade at different laboratorieson the same phone. SAR is themeasurement of the amountof energy absorbed in tissue,

either by the whole body ora small part of the body. Itis measured in watts/kg (ormilliwatts/g) of matter. Thismeasurement is used todetermine whether a wirelessphone complies with safetyguidelines.

    9. What steps can I take toreduce my exposure toradiofrequency energy frommy wireless phone? If there is a risk from theseproducts - and at this point wedo not know that there is - it isprobably very small. But if you

are concerned about avoidingeven potential risks, you cantake a few simple steps tominimize your exposure toradiofrequency energy (RF).Since time is a key factor inhow much exposure a person

receives, reducing the amountof time spent using a wirelessphone will reduce RF exposure. If you must conduct extendedconversations by wirelessphone every day, you couldplace more distance betweenyour body and the source ofthe RF, since the exposure leveldrops off dramatically withdistance. For example, youcould use a headset and carrythe wireless phone away from

your body or use a wireless

phone connected to a remoteantenna. Again, the scientificdata do not demonstrate thatwireless phones are harmful. But if you are concernedabout the RF exposure fromthese products, you can usemeasures like those describedabove to reduce your RFexposure from wireless phoneuse.

    10. What about children usingwireless phones?

The scientific evidence doesnot show a danger to usersof wireless phones, includingchildren and teenagers. If youwant to take steps to lowerexposure to radiofrequencyenergy (RF), the measuresdescribed above would apply to

children and teenagers usingwireless phones. Reducing thetime of wireless phone useand increasing the distancebetween the user and the RFsource will reduce RF exposure. Some groups sponsored by

other national governmentshave advised that childrenbe discouraged from usingwireless phones at all. Forexample, the government inthe United Kingdom distributedleaflets containing such arecommendation in December2000. They noted that noevidence exists that using awireless phone causes braintumors or other ill effects.Their recommendation to limitwireless phone use by childrenwas strictly precautionary; it

was not based on scientificevidence that any health hazardexists.

    11. What about wireless phoneinterference with medicalequipment?

Radiofrequency energy (RF)from wireless phones caninteract with some electronicdevices. For this reason, theFDA helped develop a detailedtest method to measureelectromagnetic interference

(EMI) of implanted cardiacpacemakers and defibrillatorsfrom wireless telephones. This test method is now partof a standard sponsoredby the Association for the

Advancement of Medicalinstrumentation (AAMI). Thefinal draft, a joint effort bythe FDA, medical devicemanufacturers, and manyother groups, was completedin late 2000. This standard willallow manufacturers to ensurethat cardiac pacemakers and

defibrillators are safe fromwireless phone EMI. The FDAhas tested hearing aids forinterference from handheldwireless phones and helpeddevelop a voluntary standardsponsored by the Institute

of Electrical and ElectronicEngineers (IEEE). This standardspecifies test methods andperformance requirementsfor hearing aids and wirelessphones so that no interferenceoccurs when a person uses

a compatible phone and acompatible hearing aid atthe same time. This standardwas approved by the IEEE in2000. The FDA continues tomonitor the use of wirelessphones for possible interactionswith other medical devices.Should harmful interferencebe found to occur, the FDAwill conduct testing to assessthe interference and work toresolve the problem.
