Back to School

This summer flew by, but maybe it appeared shorter than usual as

I had some “downtime” for surgery, which is expected when living the life of a cancer survivor. Downtime causes a time warp illusion, but all is well that ends well and I am recovered and back to “life as I know it” fulltime.

I am excited and thankful for the little things. I recently began using a bookkeeper, Lourdes Arvizu, and it is a pleasant transition. I have also used Rory Chitwood (one of the UNWINED owners who being a former Apple Computer Inc. employee, also has a consulting company) to sync my MacBook, iMac and iPhone. Baby steps to become

more efficient and save time. Saving administrative time allows for more social and networking plans. As the weather gets colder, we move into fall and events galore. We start out with the traditional family events such as Claws for a Cause in September, Saint Mary’s County Fair in October, and much more as you will see in the Save the Date section on Page 19. October, of course, brings out the creative wardrobes as well which women can appreciate, as the Wonderful Witchy Women luncheon and Broomstick Ball also approach. Dust off your witch hats and join the fun for good causes. LG Magazine is a sponsor of each. Make sure to post your own events or photos of events you have attended, on the LG Magazine facebook page so we know what is important to you. We enjoy promoting businesses, and that helps us

also promote the charity events, so when in the market please use our advertisers, as these business owners care about the community and are reaching out to you. We want to be involved in your events. If you want to look your best at these events, visit Paulette Tsigaris at their stylish Redkin certified dollhouse Salon for glamorous hair and makeup. See their special offer on page 5 and awaken your “inner doll.” You can also treat yourself to an “in vogue” blowout at the famous Nirvana Salon page 12. Lastly, don’t hesitate to use the generous offer of $20 off from the Shoe Candy ad on page 14. Shoe Candy owner Lucille Mendez graciously provides wardrobe for the editor photos. A special thanks to “A Party for Your Palate.” We had a wonderful event with Chef Bruce Finch from a Party for Your Palate. See his ad with the current schedule for culinary classes, or hire him for a uniquely scrumptious menu and I can guarantee you will enjoy getting to know him. Also, send me an email if you would like to get on our evite list for upcoming events.

If you are looking for a good time, don’t miss the 8th annual Claws for a Cause (Los Gatos Lobster Party) on September 8th. The Claws for a Cause is presented by the Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club, in partnership with

C.B. Hannegan’s Irish Pub to support music, art and youth scholarship programs. Just thinking about this event, which features all-you-can-eat fresh Maine lobster and tri-tip, is enough to make one’s mouth water. Last year’s “block party” dinner sold out, so make sure to get your ticket now. “I have been living in Los Gatos since 1996 and I have seen a lot of events. The lobster fest is a great Los Gatos tradition! One that is not to be missed,” says Jorja Smith. You may recall an earlier article in LG Magazine, written about Darrell Monda, which listed organizations he was a part of and described his involvement. It took two pages to list his many achievements, but his heart was definitely wrapped around Claws for a Cause, as he proudly recalled initiating the very first one. He has been involved ever since. In 2004, Darrell attended a St. Patty’s Day fundraiser at C.B. Hannegan’s, which was what sparked the location inspiration. He liked what he saw. Mark Brodsky, another Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club (LGMRC) member, had regularly attended an all you can eat lobster party in Hawaii each year. They convened a lobster committee, and the brainstorming commenced. Darrell originally suggested lobster tails, but another committee member insisted on live lobsters, which, in retrospect, is a good thing, considering the catchy name of the event! Darrell approached Johnny Hannegan to inquire if he would be interested in holding this new event at his location, and with his confirmation, the event was born. At the same time, Darrell worked with about fifteen seniors from the SJSU advertising department to create a design campaign for this fundraiser the

Rotary named ‘Claws for a Cause.’ “The artwork was very creative. The students involved all were proud to have this showpiece for their portfolios, and most of them achieved well-paying positions quickly after graduating that year,” shares Darrell. The event planning was completed, but they still had the day of the event to plan for. “We (LGMRC) began to fly the lobsters out from Maine the Friday prior to the party, through Saturday morning. We loaded them into trucks, then took the live lobsters out of the back of the trucks, and the cooking began. During that first dinner we had 2,000 lobsters, and it was really an experiment. Mark brought large pots and gas burners and somehow we made it through. When Mark and I thought of this gathering, we had no idea it would turn out to be a great town event, raising sufficient funds for local non-profits and high school scholarships.” (Collectively, this event allowed over a quarter million dollars to be donated to local charities, scholarships and events.) The event is so renowned that Rotary groups from other locations now visit this Los Gatos bash for input and to mimic it. The Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce last year awarded ‘Claws for a Cause’ founder Darrell Monda the 2011 MVP-Most Valuable Professional at their Annual Dinner. The event was held at the La Rinconada Country Club. Darrell was recognized for his tireless volunteer work benefiting the community through the many service organizations of which he is a member, such as the Los Gatos Morning Rotary and the Los Gatos Community Foundation. Although Darrell is still tightly entwined with the event we sometimes refer to as the ‘Lobster Block Party’, Ron Lykins is the current Chair, and has been involved with this dedicated team as an advocate behind Chartering the

Morning Club from the sponsoring Club side, while at Los Gatos Rotary. “This is an all-hands event with every member of our Cool Cat Morning Rotary Club involved,” adds Ron. All 75 members of the LG Morning Rotary Club – Cool Cats of Los Gatos will be on deck. The motto is “Stray Cats United, Cool Cats Forever.” We have to thank the owners of C.B. Hannegan’s (best known for their annual St. Patty’s Day celebrations) of course. “It has been our pleasure to host this wonderful party for the last six years, and we look forward to hosting it again this year. The Los Gatos Morning Rotary club has put together the #1 community fundraiser with the Claws for a Cause - All you can eat Lobster Block Party,” says Johnny Hannegan. The Joe Sereno Band, a Los Gatos favorite, begins their evening’s performance as 500 to 1,000 people in the parking lot begin dancing to fun rock and roll music. It is a lively, but very safe environment with groups of friends dancing together, while others begin the food line. The venue now serves 3,000 crustaceans to satisfy this “all-you-can-eat” crowd. (The current “most eaten” record is 17 lobsters consumed by one attendee during the event.) In the back there are 12 large 20-gallon pots where the lobsters are cooked. It is no longer an experiment; the team has the logistics, including county health code regulations, dialed in. “The flow of the line moves strategically quick. I have noticed the improvement through the years. Even while in line, it is an incredibly social time--an opportunity to reacquaint yourself with friends and neighbors,” says Don Schallock

Sponsors:Darrell, Sponsor Chair this year, has created a first class treatment for his “King Lobsters” to ensure these sponsors have a pampered and special evening, including VIP parking, no waiting in line and other special goodies. Good Samaritan Hospital has been generous, along with many other businesses, but he is always looking for more. Ed Stahl from Travel Advisors of Los Gatos provided a $20,000 cruise ship vacation to Mexico for instance. There are many fabulous prizes and many raffle tickets will be purchased in anticipation. They thank their media sponsor Los Gatos Weekly, who has been very kind. According to Monda, the LG Weekly editor Dick Sparrer said, “This (Claws for a Cause) is the best annual party that Los Gatos holds.” Causes:Lighting for Literacy: a technology education and solar lighting program to improve literacy in 3rd world countries, Feeding the Homeless: thorough supporting St. Luke’s Pantry in Los Gatos which feeds and provides services to roughly 30 homeless people in Los Gatos, Ending Polio Now: Rotary International’s campaign to stamp out polio around the world, with support from the World Health Organization and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Youth Leadership Programs: scholarships to attend Enterprise Leadership Conference and Rotary Youth Leadership camp, School Music Programs: support of Band Boosters at LG High, Scholarships for College: College support for deserving and needy college bound seniors. Additional support to: Los Gatos Sea Scouts, Boy Scout Troop 501, and the Los Gatos Heroes of 911 Foundation Clean Up CrewAt 10:30pm when the last song is squeezed out of the band, and they are finished with their encores, the crowd slowly dissipates, except the Rotarians and their volunteers as they clean up until about midnight. They then return at 7am Sunday morning to continue the big clean up job - disassembling ramps, cleaning utensils and pots, and spray down the whole building. They usually finish about noon, at which time Johnny Hannegan has a hearty breakfast waiting for them, so they can eat and reflect on the excitement of the previous night, the wondrous contributions they are now able to make, and the great feeling throughout the community.

To get involved, donate time or funds, or get more information, contact Darrell Monda at (408) 370-3800 or email [email protected].

In June, the fourth annual Los Gatos Plein Air 2012 fine art show and silent auction was presented by the Los Gatos Morning Rotary.

This juried art show featured talented artists that paint in the plein air tradition from across the United States. These artists painted for four days in Los Gatos and the surrounding area and then exhibited and sold their paintings at the Los Gatos Town Plaza in a free to the public event filled with art, music and wine. The fundraiser benefited Montalvo Arts Education Program, Los Gatos Music and Arts, The Museums of Los Gatos, and Art Docents of Los Gatos. These programs serve over 20,000 youths throughout Santa Clara County. What is Plein Air? Painting outdoors, or “en plein air”, began in 19th century Europe, when Englishman John Constable and the French Barbizon painters sought to depict everyday subjects in their natural setting. Using sketches made directly in the field, these Realists inspired the Impressionists, who sought to convey light with color. Today, painting from life is a pursuit that continues to challenge the finest artists in the world but it is a style that is honored and celebrated through numerous Plein Air events that are held across the United States. This year over 80

“Everything looks great, and we are very happy with the end result. You’ve delivered on everything we’ve asked for and the results are outstanding.”

Hello Everyone! We are so excited to now offer a safe and comfortable skin tightening and body contouring procedure. Nusilk Med Spa is now offering the 5th generation of Radiofrequency (RF).

10 years ago, I was involved in a study for one of the first RF technologies. Although it was somewhat effective, it was painful with sporadic results. The first generation of RF emitters had inconsistent heating. This was painful, and sometimes caused blistering or indents from burning non-intended tissue. Like all technologies, there were some bugs to work through over the last decade, and happily I now stand behind this technology. The 5th generation of this RF technology really hits the mark of efficiency and safety. RF is an advanced technology that safely heats the collagen in the skin. When consistent energy is delivered, collagen in the body will contract, providing a tightening of skin in areas that have lost their elasticity from various reasons including aging, stretching from weight gain, or even pregnancy. In addition, it helps regenerate new collagen resulting in tighter and a more youthful skin appearance. Unlike other light/laser-based therapies, RF is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and is not affected by skin color. The consistent and controlled heat results in a tighter skin surface, breaking up uneven areas and shrinking excess tissue. It can contour those stubborn areas that won’t budge no matter how much we exercise. Although, these treatments will benefit most everyone, it is not the best option for those with excessive skin laxity or fat that would be best treated with surgical improvements such as tucks and liposuction. 3 DEEP skin tightening is great on those trouble areas of the face, neck, arms and knees. It tightens the laxity of the skin which improves one’s skin texture greatly. It can reduce the overall size of any area being treated. 3 DEEP body contouring reduces the volume, shape and circumference of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The consistent heat is very comfortable and the client has no downtime. Your skin may be slightly pink but this fades quickly. You will see some results immediately and continued improvements over more time. Most areas require 3-6 treatments. Throughout the years, I have worked with and studied a number of crazy technologies. My favorite was one that looked like a hair dryer from outer space that was supposed to grow hair. My colleagues affectionately named it the “chia pet” chair (no, it didn’t work). So, I am very hesitant to recommend anything that has not proven to be effective. This treatment is very effective. I can honestly say that I was initially skeptical because there was no pain. In “the olden days,” if it didn’t hurt it didn’t work. However my jowls tell a different story. I am very excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment. All consultations are complementary. Come see if this is the right choice for you. — Kimberly Schubert RN

artists applied to participate in Los Gatos Plein Air 2012 and 35 of those artists were chosen by a respected juror to participate. Those artists and nine invited artists journyed into our community and painted in this historic tradition using a variety of media, including oil, pastel, and watercolor. June 16th the public and artists gathered at the Los Gatos Town Plaza to view the framed paintings and participate in the silent auction. Art lovers enjoyed wine from local wineries while listening to live music and mingling with the artists while viewing the treasures of the town and the Bay Area as depicted on canvas.LG
