    Additional Yield Trials Data

    • The following trials were carried out by BASF at Rawcliffe Bridge, Yorkshire in 2016 and 2017 and consists of a range of wheat varieties compared with 8 fungicide treatments.

    • Rawcliffe Bridge is a high yielding site with a high incidence of disease regarding both Yellow Rust and Septoria Tritici recorded in 2016, and high levels of Yellow Rust in 2017.

    • The following graph shows a comparison of the three treatments shown in the table below for the season 2016.

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 6Limagrain Field Seeds

    BASF

    Rawcliffe Bridge 2016

    • LG Motown was the top variety for treated yield potential (a mean of 8 different Commercial fungicide treatments).

    • LG Motown responds well to differing commercial fungicide programmes.

    • LG Motown has a good disease resistance profile as signified by the high untreated yield – good diseaseresistance should not be under estimated in seasons of high disease pressure.

    BASF

    Rawcliffe Bridge 2017

    • The season of 2017 consisted of 32 varieties across 9 treatments.

    • The following graph (next slide) shows a comparison of three fungicide programmes used in 2017, comparing Untreated, Triazole + multisite and a 2 x SDHI (see treatment list below).

    BASF

    Rawcliffe Bridge 2017

    • LG Motown performed very well in 2017, again being one of the top varieties across the range of fungicide programmes used in the trial.

    • LG Motown also showed a high untreated yield even though some lodging was seen in the trial plot.

    • Interestingly LG Motown and Graham are earlier maturing varieties and performed very well in this trial, in a season of low disease pressure regarding Septoria tritici.

    • High levels of yellow rust was present in the trial as one can see from the untreated plots of Reflection and JB Diego

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 9Limagrain Field Seeds

Data from the AHDB Recommended List 2019/20.

    • LG Motown is a shorter strawed variety with lodging ratings of 6 untreated / 6 PGR treated. Limagrain would suggest that the actual rating of 6.4 is rather harsh on the variety and that the season of 2017 was a difficult season for PGR applications and regional weather patterns.

    • Limagrain data would suggest the variety should have a 7 rating when PGR treated and the 2018 data sets should agree with this observation.

    • Limagrain advise that a split PGR programme should be implemented on LG Motown to ensure good rooting, tillering and straw strength.

    • LG Motown is an earlier maturing variety (0), similar to several feed varieties on the AHDB recommended list 2019/20.

    • Looking at the raw data sets for maturity in the North one can see that LG Motown does become one of the earliest varieties for maturity – a significant characteristic of importance for Northern growers.

    Limagrain PGR Trials 2017

    • Limagrain carried out trials in 2016 and 2017 looking at single v split PGR programmes against an untreated control.

    • The data was conclusive with all work we have done in the past regarding variety interaction and PGR programmes – split programmes do ensure reduced lodging and consequently higher yield potential and aid an easier harvest.

    • The table below shows the PGR programme used in 2017 with the following graph showing the results for LG Motown across two seed rates

    • Limagrain trials show the split PGR programme reduced lodging significantly and produced the highest yields.

    • LG Motown is a high tillering variety and reduced seed rates should be considered to reduce lodging without a yield penalty ( Split PGR v 300 & 400 seed rate).

    • Additional PGR application at GS37- 39 may be necessary in very high biomass / high yielding situations to ensure good standing at harvest – Limagrain suggest that lower rates of PGR are advisable at this later stage, as LG Motown is a shorter strawed variety and a significantly reduced height may reduce final yield potential.

    Maturity

    • Limagrain believe that LG Motown has an earlier maturity than what the AHDB recommended list 2019/20 data

    suggests.

    • The pictures above were taken on the same day from our Limagrain trials in Perth, Scotland and show a range of

varieties at differing maturity stages which have been related to the AHDB RL ratings.

    • LG Motown offers a significant difference, a valuable characteristic for growers especially in the North.

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 13Limagrain Field Seeds

    Maturity - Northern Data

    • The graph shows a mean of a two year data set (2016/2017) from official trials in the North for yield combined with maturity (ripening days +/- JB Diego).

    • LG Motown is an earlier maturing variety in the North – an important characteristic valued by growers for ensuring

an earlier harvest and field work opportunities for the next cropping campaign.

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 14Limagrain Field Seeds

    Drilling Date v Seed Rate

    • Limagrain trials have shown that LG Motown is a high tillering variety.

    • This is an important characteristic as seed rates should be based on drilling date and soil / weather conditions.

    • Excessive seed rates will have an effect on a crops standing ability and disease pressure levels.

    • LG Motown is not suitable for the early drilling situation and Limagrain recommend a drilling date of mid September onwards.

    • LG Motown does suit the later drilling opportunity as it’s a high tillering variety that moves quickly in the spring regarding plant growth.

    • The variety has the desirable characteristics for competing in a blackgrass situation when a delayed drilling strategy is used to combat blackgrass populations.

    • LG Motown can be drilled to the end of February.

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 15Limagrain Field Seeds

Drilling Date v Seed Rate H2017

    • The graph above shows LG Motown compared with Revelation and LG Sundance at three seed rates and two drilling dates for final yield and final ear count numbers.

    • LG Motown would appear to be similar to Revelation regarding yield and final ear counts.

    • Limagrain suggest that for LG Motown a seed rate of 250 - 300 seeds / m2 should be considered when drilling early October and increased to 325 - 375 for the end of October if conditions are favourable.

    • High seed rates should only be considered for later drilling or in a blackgrass situation if conditions are not favourable for crop establishment – PGR and Nitrogen applications will have to be carefully managed if high seed rates have been implemented.

    Disease Resistance – Soft Wheat

Data from the AHDB Recommended List 2019/20.

    • LG Motown has a very good disease resistance profile, offering very good resistance for Mildew, yellow and brown rust combined with a respectable rating of 5.7 for Septoria.

    • The eyespot rating of (4) is based on limited data but should be viewed with caution and Limagrain advises that an appropriate fungicide for eyespot control is included in any programme implemented.

    • Mildew resistance is important in both a later drilled situation on light soils and also in Scotland when some seasons dictate high mildew disease pressure.

    • LG Motown carries resistance for OWBM – a genetic insurance when insecticide products are limited and indeed questionable regarding timing and effectiveness.

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 17Limagrain Field Seeds

    Disease Resistance

    Hard Feed Wheat Comparison

Data from the AHDB Recommended List 2019/20.

    • LG Motown offers a very good combined disease resistance profile when compared with many of the hard feed wheat varieties on the AHDB recommended list 2019/20.

    • LG Motown is resistant to OWBM, a valuable genetic characteristic that is not present in many hard feed wheat varieties. Although OWBM populations have appeared to be low in recent seasons, many agronomists agree that we should not get complacent regarding this significant pest.

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 18Limagrain Field Seeds

    Agronomic – Variety Positioning

Data from the AHDB Recommended List 2019/20.

    • LG Motown performs well as a first wheat and data would suggest the variety is a good second / continuous wheat.

    • LG Motown is not a variety suitable for the early drilling situation on farm. Limagrain recommend that the variety suits the mid and later sowing drilling dates – Mid September onwards

    • LG Motown performs very well on the lighter soil situation which can be attributed to the varieties agronomic characteristics of high tillering, quicker spring plant growth and an earlier maturity.

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 19Limagrain Field Seeds

    Market Opportunities

Data from the AHDB Recommended List 2019/20.

    • LG Motown is a soft feed wheat with additional approval for distilling.

    • Soft feed wheat varieties with additional end market opportunities of export / distilling offer growers additional premiums over standard soft and hard feed wheat varieties.

    • LG Motown offers Northern growers a variety that fulfils the market requirements of both distilling and bio ethanol industries as well as the standard feed wheat market.

  • LG Motown Optimising Variety Performance/ page 20Limagrain Field Seeds

    Grain Quality

Data from the AHDB Recommended List 2019/20.

    • LG Motown has a respectable Hagberg Falling Number and specific weight.

    • LG Motown has grain quality similar or better than many of the soft and hard feed wheat varieties available.

    • Limited data would suggest that LG Motown has a better sprouting resistance (6) than many of the soft wheat varieties on the AHDB recommended list. Interestingly we now have quality wheat varieties and hard feed wheat varieties that are more susceptible to sprouting in the market place.

    • LG Motown is an earlier maturing variety and as such requires monitoring for harvest date to ensure grain quality is not implicated from an over delayed harvest. Using varieties of differing maturity can be a valuable asset regarding grain quality, especially when erratic weather patterns dictate harvest date as seen in the North.

    • Very good disease resistance profile for all key diseases (Eyespot rating (4) – similar to many varieties and will require monitoring)

    • A high tillering variety with a faster spring plant development.

    • LG Motown is an earlier maturing variety – a beneficial characteristic in the North.

    • LG Motown performs well in both a first and second wheat situations.

    • LG Motown is suitable for the later drilling situation, after roots or in a black grass scenario.

    • The variety performs well on light soil types.

    • Additional market outlet of Distilling over standard feed wheats.

    • The variety has OWBM resistance.
