A Message from the PresidentI am delighted to welcome all members, guests and visitors to Leverstock Green Cricket Club in 007-8. I am especially pleased that our local Member of Parliament, Mike Penning, has agreed to become an honorary member of the club and we look forward to seeing him during the season.Overall, the club has had an enjoyable and successful year. Unfortunately, the

First Eleven was relegated to Division 3 of the Hertfordshire League and we do hope for better results this season under the leadership of the legendary Dave Tyson, who returns as First Eleven captain. On a more positive note, the Sunday First Eleven gained promotion in the Chess Valley League. The Second Eleven had another very successful season, achieving a second successive promotion to Division 5 of the Herts League. The Third Eleven consolidated its status in Division 11 whilst the Fourth Eleven had an encouraging season and will play league cricket for the first time in 008. We wish Tony Williams and his players all the best in this new venture. Youth cricket continues to flourish at Leverstock Green and is, and will be, an important factor in the club’s continuing development.Cricket Week was very successful in 006, the highlight being the match played against the Luther Blissett XI, which contained both international players and celebrities. It was a wonderful occasion graced by a glorious, golden Summer’s day and a large crowd. It was a wonderful advert for “cricket on the Green” and raised substantial amounts of money for charity. Off the field, the club thrived socially and there was a regular series of enjoyable events. The main one was the Annual Dinner Dance which, for the first time, was held in a well-appointed marquee adjacent to the pavilion. Great credit must go to the Social Committee which organised the event, led by Steve Wright, who was awarded the prestigious Faulkner Trophy in recognition of the wonderful efforts of the committee.

Next year, in 008, we are looking forward to enjoying the club’s centenary year. Plans are being made to celebrate one hundred years of existence in style. However, we are also looking forward with optimism to this season when I hope that large numbers of people will enjoy and appreciate the facilities and ethos of Leverstock Green Cricket Club.

A Message from the new Club Captain!Prior to outlining my hopes for the year ahead I think it is worth thanking David Tyson for five long years as Club Captain. During David’s time in the post there have been many successes and promotions throughout the club but perhaps the biggest development for us has been in our junior section. Over the last five years this vital resource for the future of our club has developed year on year and is now bearing the kind of fruit for our senior teams necessary for us to survive and move forward in years to come. We now have not only five junior teams playing a league season in their respective age groups but a very busy and productive Saturday morning training session, not to mention festival days and other tournaments. We have a growing and thriving juniors section that attracts sponsorship easily and is in the process of taking the next step in its development with the appointment of a senior coach to oversee its immediate future. David’s direction during his time as club captain has driven this forward and we all owe him a great debt of gratitude. I wish him well as first team captain for both Saturdays and Sundays this year and thank him for the help in bedding me into the role.I believe 007 will be a transitional year for our club and my real hope for all of us is that we get back to enjoying this beautiful game and cherishing the memories it furnishes us with. Our first team under David’s captaincy has a chance to really develop the club's best youngsters this year in Division 3 and create a platform from which to move forward in years to come. They will be younger and more settled than in the recent past and I hope this helps them become successful again. Our ageing second team managed a second successive promotion last year and has made it into the lofty position of Division 5. Congratulations must be given to the effort of Simon Collins whose steadfast belief and conviction in this team was the difference between being promoted and staying where they were in Division 6. Special mention must also be given to the outstanding efforts of Peter Hill and Tony Humphrey at the top of the innings both individually and together in partnership which realised over 90 league runs. Their contribution was a decisive factor in a successful season. Our third team once again finished in the middle of Division 11 last year with a disappointing 6 wins from 19 games repeating the pattern from recent years since their excellent promotion from Division 1 in

8

Page 9: LGCC Fixture Book 2007

004. This year will be the first that our good youngsters from last year's under 14’s and 15’s will be properly ready to play for them and I hope that this, along with support of some of the stalwarts from recent years will spur them on. Brian Coulshed and Mike Parkes’ team will be younger, fitter and keener than ever before and I personally would like them to be a strong focus for our club as I believe them to be at least one division below where they could and should be. Promotion contention is a must, so be aggressive from the start boys and good luck! This is also the first year that we have entered a fourth eleven into the Hertfordshire League Division 13 under the guidance and captaincy of Tony Williams. On behalf of everyone I would like to wish Tony the very best of luck and I am sure you will do very well. Our Sunday team managed to gain promotion from Division 5 to Division 4 last year just edging out Uxbridge in the final game and congratulations go to all concerned. This was a truly memorable season for a predominantly young side in our club who turned out every week without fail under the captaincy of David Tyson. I hope they can build on their consistency of performance of last year and make this season as successful and as enjoyable as last year's.I hope the overriding message from me in my first year as Club Captain is that we now have to invest as much time and effort as we can as a club into continuing the development of our youngsters, who are after all our future. Every senior side will have the best of our good young cricketers in it and captains and senior players are duty-bound to support, encourage and promote these people into prominent, role-playing positions. We have to expose them to the level we currently find ourselves at as a club and let them show us what they can do. Finally a note for our opposition at all levels. I would like them to feel unconditionally welcome when they are here and leave our club after any match feeling that they enjoyed themselves and looking forward to returning. We sometime lose ourselves in the heat of competition and I would like to think that we can rediscover some of the respect for our opponents that this great game deserves. Above all, I want you all to enjoy your cricket at whatever level you play. I want the club to be a busy, vibrant, happy place on match days. We have to get back to the joy that cricket brings all of us. Good luck to you all. Best wishes,

Danny Murray 9

2007 Club EventsThe social events for 006 were all successful nights the highlight being the annual awards dinner which was held at the club in a marquee. This event will be repeated on Saturday 6th October 007. Details for tickets will be circulated in April, details will be displayed on notice boards in the club, via e-mail and on the club web site.To enable us to cut our postage costs, the number of letters we send out will be reduced where possible. To ensure that you are kept informed please send an e-mail with your details to [email protected]. You can also visit the club website at www.lgcc.org.uk.007 Social events kicked off with a very well attended valentine party night followed in March by Abracadabra, a night of magic, music and superb entertainment that included our very own Phil Perry. All the superbly talented artists gave their time for free and on the night we raised £585 for the Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice. The hospice service supports families from across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes who are caring for a child or young person diagnosed with a life-limiting condition - a well-deserved cause I am sure you will agree.Due to the high attendance demand this event was changed to a ticketed entrance on the grounds of health and safety therefore limiting the numbers to 110 people. In future to avoid disappointment and ensure a fair distribution of tickets, events such as this one will be entrance by ticket only with members taking priority for allocation of tickets. The Carling Cup final was televised on a large screen, which was also a very well attended event. Watch notice boards for announcements of future sporting events - we have a world cup cricket tournament taking place and a rugby world cup later this year.Once again, many thanks for all your support during 006, from myself and the social team, Gerry Howe, Gail Howe, Lin Craft and our newest member Claire Heath we look forward to providing yet another year of top class social events for all the club members.

Junior Section Season 2006The 006 season was one of Leverstock Green’s best yet with the Under 10’s winning the North West League and every other team improving on 005. In 007 we are looking to better the successes of last season and have completely restructured the way Leverstock Green runs its colts section to ensure we keep moving in the right direction. This season will see us running teams in the Under 10, 11, 1, 13 and two Under 15 teams. After finishing the season undefeated and winning the Herts North West League the Under 10’s then went on to finish runner-up in the County finals at Haileybury School. Congratulations must go to Daniel Lake, Sam Revell, Johnny Pitts, Dominic Clarke, Adam Campbell, Jack Rankin, Rory Fleming, Haydn Cassidy, Darren Leadbitter, George

McCausland and Charlie Fowler who all contributed throughout the season. The Under 11’s played some tremendous cricket throughout the season winning 5 matches and eventually finishing a creditable third.

The Under 11 8-a-side fought hard throughout the season losing only 3 matches and also finished a respectable third. The Under 13’s showed plenty of promise and progressed nicely as the season went on. They improved on the

18

Page 19: LGCC Fixture Book 2007

performances of 005 jumping from 5th to another third place. The Under 15’s showed great improvement as well, moving from a finish of 8th in 005 to 4th last season. The Under 15 Village competition was a new direction the club took to help provide opportunities for new players. This proved to be a success with our boys finishing runners up by only points.006 saw the second annual Leverstock Green Ashes Competition with the boys making it through to the final only to finish runners up for the second year running. On the 15th July 007 the Ashes Competition will take on a new format with matches for all age groups throughout the day. This season saw Ben Parkes and Charlie Munroe selected in Sub County squads with Rory Fleming, Sam Revell and Daniel Fowler selected for District squads. We again saw a number of Under 15’s developing their skills in the senior ranks. Because of this we will be able to field a 4th XI in the 007 Herts League for the first time. Since the club introduced the 4th XI concept three seasons ago it has seen a number of our teenage cricketers develop into vital players in the senior ranks. Congratulations to all those who won individual awards last season. The Colt of the Year award went to Will Murray who produced all round performances for the Under 15’s and in the senior ranks.Let’s get ready for another exciting and progressive season in 007

Short History of Leverstock Green Cricket Club

The game of cricket was first played on a regular basis in Leverstock Green during the 190’s, though its formation can be traced back to 1908. Matches were played on farmland off Pancake Lane for some years, then, when the land was needed, the Club moved a short distance to Cherry Tree Lane.

The team, consisting mainly of members of the village, played regular Saturday matches until the end of the 1939 season, when, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, it was reluctantly forced to disband.

It was not until 1958, almost twenty years later, that several

players from those early days, together with local residents both old and new, managed to persuade the authorities to allow the ground as we know it today to be used as a cricket pitch. This then became the new home of Leverstock Green Cricket Club.

Only one eleven played at this time, with a fixture list for both Saturday and Sunday games.

In 1964 a second eleven was formed and over the years increasing membership enabled the club to field three regular elevens within the Hertfordshire Cricket League. A regular fourth XI was formed in 005 and joined Division Thirteen of the Herts League two years later.

The Club can also boast successful junior sides. As the club moved into the new millennium, juniors as young as seven were encouraged to join in. Through the dedication and hard work of a number of senior members and players, the Club currently runs six junior sides across five age groups.

With a thriving social membership and excellent facilities we have come a long way from the early days in Pancake Lane.

Cycling at LGCC

Eureka! Over £30,000 was raised for the British Heart Foundation during the last 10 years with over £4,000 raised last year alone. A huge thanks for all your generous support.

We raised a substantial amount at last year’s cricket week with a raffle, quiz and auction taking place on the Friday of the week. Another big thank you to all of the people who donated towards our expenses for the day with a very generous donor paying for our accommodation in Brighton on the night so we could celebrate our 10th year in style!

This year, 16 intrepid riders will once again set out to ride from London to Brighton on June 17th. As always your support would be most welcome. Setting off at 4.30 a.m. must seem like utter tomfoolery, but it’s a great day out and a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.

In 006, we undertook a daunting, draining, emotional but satisfying cycle ride from Whitehaven to Sunderland. This ride is known in the cycling circles at the CC - Coast to Coast. At over 150 miles in length it’s a ride to test the hardiest of cyclists but we all managed to achieve it without any casualties apart from a few worn out brake pads!

During this year we are planning to ride from Leverstock Green Cricket Club to the Alexandra Yacht Club in Southend-on-Sea where we will spend the night and also enjoy a day of sailing in the Thames estuary at Southend-on-Sea.

The cycling fraternity meets and rides almost every Sunday from March to October, if you would like to join us on one of these Sunday excursions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Once again, we thank you for your sponsorship; your support again this year would be as always most appreciated.
