3

1 - BMW safety tests

Bursting tank scenario tests

➢ The LH2 tank of the BMW Hydrogencar was analysed

➢ Ten vessels (120 litre) were tested

➢ Tanks were wrecked by means ofcutting charges.

[Pehr, K., 1996. Aspects of safety and acceptance of LH2 tanksystems in passenger cars. Int. J. Hydrogen Energy 21, 387–395]

4

1 - BMW safety testsUncertainties

➢ The exact amount of LH2 during each test is not known (1.8 ÷ 5.4 kg).

➢ Only the inner vessel was tested

➢ Exact position of the measurement points is unknown

➢ A proper fragments analysis was not provided (max. fragment range 15 m)

➢ Only maximum fireball diameter (20 m) and duration (4 s) were reported

➢ Fireball radiation measurements were not published

6

Methodology

Analytical models & empirical correlations were employed in the analysis

8

Results - Overpressure

Ideal gas behaviour models do not work properly close to the critical pressure

9

Results - Overpressure and impulse

Results - Fragments and fireball (SH2IFT)Fragments

Fireball

➢ Further validation of the model is needed

➢ Thermal radiation measurements for LH2

fireball (small- mid-scale) were not found

13

Current activity and future studiesUnder review

➢ CFD analysis of the BLEVE by using ADREA-HF in collaboration with NCSR“Demokritos”(BMW tests)

➢ Thermal node model to estimate the time to failure of a liquefied gasvessel exposed to a fire

Current activities

➢ CFD analysis of the LH2 tank lading when exposed to a fire

➢ Implementation of the combustion effect in future models
