Activities of the last 24h

Until 15h00 : Fill 4381, 1033b. Time in stable beams: 12h20 15h00 → 18h00 : Recovery from CRYO, the injection

- “Overcharge” caused loss of cry conditions in P4 - Recurrent problem of last 3 fills, otherwise transients mastered for the filling

18h00 → 21h00 : Injection of next physics fill, same filling scheme - Suspected problems with ADT causing emittance blowup -> dumped first fill - Still blow up (B2-V)

21h00 → now : Fill 4384, ~10h in stable beams

Emittances Fill 4384

No obvious problems with the ADT, at least in B2VQ’ controlled well to 15-17, both planes, during injection

Chili earthquake

By J. Wenninger

Around 02:00 AM (local time) the operation crews noticed that the beam (at injection) was moving radially although no modulation was turned on. They suspected a malfunctioning of the real-time systems, tried some things and then it went away…

Just after 07:00 AM (local time), during the shift handover, the crews again noticed a modulation of the radial position and an oscillating lifetime. Again suspected the real-time systems. When they called me and I looked at the data, I said as a joke ‘this looks like the Costa Rica earthquake’ unaware that earthquakes had hit Chili.

Example of effect on orbit (event 1)!  LHC radial orbit change between 01:45 and 02:15 (23:45-24:15 UTC). LHC at

injection energy. Radial amplitude is large (3 times larger than Costa Rica event, 200 microns).

! Roughly 1 hour after the 8.3M quake, which roughly fits a simple estimate based on a distance of 12’000 km at a speed of 4 km/s.

Period is ~ 25 seconds.

Plan

Intensity ramp up:After 2 good fills with 1033b, we want to add one more train!- Will find a convenient time after the meeting to proceed

MP validation of “1200b” step ongoing to go further over WE

ParasiticEoF: TCL and Roman pot scans, RF studies - this morning, aim for a dump at ~10hRF: bunch length test for heat load
