# Li-Fi is transmission of data through illumination.
# LED Bulb varies in intensity faster than the human
eye can follow.
# LED lights can be switched on and off at high
speeds.
# This property is the basics for Li-Fi.
# LED when on gives binary 1 and off gives binary 0
Introduction to lifi
technology
FOUNDER
Professor Harald Haas from the University of Edinburghcoined the term Li-Fi in in TED global talk in 2011.
Harald Haas continues to wow the world with the potential to use light for communication
Prof. Harald HaasUniversity of Edinburgh.
How lifi works
Light for Wireless
communicationLight has been around for millions of years It has created us, has
created life and has created all stuffs of life.Light is part of
electromagnetic spectrum. There are 40 billion light box already
installed.Flickering lights are annoying but thy may have an
upside. Li-Fi uses rapid pulses of light to transmit information
wirelessly.
It is inherently safe to use and would be great if we can use it for our
wireless communication.
WI-FI vs LI-FI#Li-Fi can be thought of as a light-based Wi-Fi. That is, it uses light
#instead of radio waves to transmit information.
#Instead of Wi-Fi modems, Li-Fi would use transceiver-fitted LED
lamps that can light a room as well as transmit and receive
information.
#WI-FI is great for general wireless coverage within buildings, and li-
fi is ideal for high density wireless data coverage in confined area
and for relieving radio interference issues .
#So the two technologies can be considered complimentary.
Present Scenario #We have 1.4 million cellular base stations
deployed
#We also have 5 billion of mobile phones
#Mobile phones transmit 600tb of data every
Month
#Wireless communication has become an utility
likE electricity and water #We use it in our
everyday life, private life, business life
#Currently Wi-Fi uses radio waves
Disadvantages of other
spectrums
Advantages
Availability Efficiency High security Easy to use Fast data transfer Harmless Low-cost Capacity
APPLICATIONS OF LI-FI
Limitations
#Light can't pass through objects.
#Interferences from external light sources like sun light, normal
bulbs, and opaque materials in the path of transmission will
cause interruption in the communication.
#Li-Fi requires line of sight.
#High installation cost of the VLC systems.
#A major challenge facing Li-Fi is how the receiving device will
transmit back to transmitter.
ConclusionThe possibilities are numerous and can be explored further. If
this technology can be put into practical use , every bulb can be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspots to transmit wireless data.
