Chapter 1: Introduction Industry report is an important subject in civil engineering. From this report, the student may apply their experience which gained from the actual site practice but if compared with the theory which we have learnt from the book, it may looks slightly difference. Industry training gives a chance to the student to face and solve the problems which may happened in the actual site training. During the training period, student may gained and learnt some experience and knowledge from the superior like project engineer and project manager. However, the part time student is given a chance to have exempted to this subject upon to the certain term and conditions apply. As a part time student, i have learnt 9 years experiences and knowledge in the construction industry from different scope of works in developer, main contractor and sub contractor. From these working experiences, I have learning different communication and leadership skill. In the report, I will sharing and discuss all my past and current scope of work, working experiences and my current handling project . I hope this report will bring me to your attention for the application to the industry training exempted.

actual site training. During the training period, student may gained and learnt some

experience and knowledge from the superior like project engineer and project manager.

certain term and conditions apply. As a part time student, i have learnt 9 years experiences

and knowledge in the construction industry from different scope of works in developer, main

contractor and sub contractor. From these working experiences, I have learning different

communication and leadership skill.

In the report, I will sharing and discuss all my past and current scope of work, working

experiences and my current handling project .

I hope this report will bring me to your attention for the application to the industry training

exempted.

Chapter 2: Company Background

2.1 Company Profile

KITA TEAMWORK SDN. BHD is formed by KITA TEAMWORK SDN. BHD is formed by Mr. Cheah Chong Sing started his career in

the year 1966 as an apprentice in the tiling industry where he acquired all his skills and

experience as an renown tile layer. With his enthusiastic and business minded character, he

team up with his partner to venture into own business in the year 1971 by established a tiling

company, Hon & Cheah Company. Under his management and directorship, the tiling

company had grown from a small sub-contractor into a company which can handle mega

projects. His enthusiasm does not stop, with his achievement so far, he also venture into the

building construction in year 1990 as main contractor where successfully undertaken and

completed numerous mega project under KITA TEAMWORK SDN BHD.

KITA TEAMWORK SDN. BHD. KITA TEAMWORK SDN. BHD. is a Malaysia base company established in the year 1990

with an authorized and fully paid capital of RM1, 000,000.00.

The company principal business is in general construction and is currently registered with

Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) under the building and structure category

of Grade ‘7’ which mean that the company are eligible to carry projects of all sizes. The

Company also registered with PKK as class ‘C’ contractor. However, the company are more

particular in undertake projects from private sector.

Through many years of experience, the company are not only capable with the technically

ground and we can also offer our services in the various discipline of construction such as

building and civil engineering, projects completed include construction of residential,

commercial and industrial buildings, infrastructure works, water and sewerage treatment and

property management. Other construction special nature accomplishments include the

construction of theme parks, luxury bungalows and condominiums, resorts and hotels.

The company emphasize the importance of teamwork and supreme management system in

accomplishment of our company objectives. With that in mind, we have set up with well

trained and experienced project management team which consists of Project Managers,

Engineers and Skilled Supervisors who are committed to uphold integrity, competence and

teamwork to ensure superior performances, efficiency and cost effective completion of

projects.

company have successfully completed numerous major projects mainly in Kuala Lumpur,

Selangor and Genting Highlands, Pahang.

3.0 PROJECT INFORMATION

SITE LOCATION PLAN

Helipad, Genting 2 is a project of Genting Malaysia Berhad, which is located at

Genting Highland. It is a minimum load bearing area designed for touchdown of a

helicopter.The area calculated to be one half the overall length of the helicopter multiplied by

three times the width of the widest portion of the fuselage. This project is around 70 km away

from city central Kuala Lumpur. Its take about one hour driving from Kuala Lumpur to the

site Genting Highland. The purpose of the project is to prepare a landing place to a helicopter,

come with waiting lounge, security guard house and pump house & water tank base.

The main contractor of the project is awarded to Kita TeamWork Sdn Bhd and this contractor

has 22 years of experience in high rise building and structure work.

The total area of this Helipad landing is 1276m2 , and the total area of guard house and

waiting lounge is 81m2.This project period is from 1/03/2012 to 31/05/2012, it takes around

3 months time to complete. The estimate contract sum is around RM 700,000.00

There are some problems we are facing during the construction, such as late confirmation

architecture material from client. Besides we also need to consider and concern some of

issues before the project should be started. The issue is we should fill the land to avoid the

erosion since the area of Helipad landing is limited.

4.0 Scope of Work Incharge by Student

My scope of work is on the civil work & architecture work. The civil work start from

demolition of site, site clearance, soil filing, setting up, concreting, form work, and so on. I

am not responsible on M&E and interior design work.

My responsibility and scope of work are as below:

i. To coordinate between architect and sub-contractor.

ii. To supervise the sub-contractor work.

iii. To check sub-contractor work on concreting, steel bar and form work

iv. To make sure all work done by sub-contractor follows the specifications, instructed by architect and C&S consultant.

v. To submit material sample to architect and get confirmation from them.

vi. To arrange on loading of material and material storage.

vii. To resolve discrepancy of drawing & bill of quantity specification.

viii. To attend the site meeting

ix. To receive and checking the daily report from the site supervisor.

x. To do site evaluation and verification with the clerk of work on the main claim submission

xi. To plan and organise the job

In this Helipad project, i have been instructed by the company to take care of

ii. Structure and architectural work of Guard House cum Operation Building

iii. Structure and architectural work of Car Poarch

iv. Structure and architectural work of Waiting Lounge

v. Structure and architectural work of Bath Room and Pantry

vi. Structure of New Pump House and Water Tank Base

5.0 Activities Done By The Student During The Construction of The Project

Activities 15 March 2012 to 15 April 2012

i. Demolition and Fill the land

I do the observation supervision on the hacking the existing floor and building. This include on the site clearance the debris and rubbish. I also arrange on the filling the earth to the landing of the helipad.

ii. To do setting up and piling

I do arranging workers on setting up and piling work. Firstly start with setting up after that already got confirmation of the piling test, the piling progress have been carried up (to the guard house, waiting lounge, pantry and toilet). The setting up, construct form work and steel bar to the helipad landing. I inspected the important part, from formwork till steel bar lay to the helipad landing.

iii. Construct of pile cap & ground Beam(middle of March)

I arranging sub contractor to construct the pile cap and ground beam including form work steel bar, concreting to the footing and ground beam (to the guard house, waiting lounge, pantry and toilet).

iv. Summation of architectural material

I am arranging the summation of architectural material like tiles, roofing tiles, lighting, some stainless steel accessory and paints to architect and the client. I am pending confirmation from the architect and client.

v. To construct the drainage and fencing

To do setting up on drainage, excavating the drainage and fencing. These included forming formwork, steel work and concreting to the drainage. To set up the fencing point and do the fencing (Wryer mesh Fencing).

vi. Construct the building of structure (the new waiting lounge and new guard house building) (early of April to the middle of April)

To construct the column and the beam (including form work, steel bar work and concreting of the column and beam).All important part of structure giving more attention( Like defect and honey corn ). To over look to all civil work especially the structure works. I am making sure all the structure work done by the sub contractor follow the specification from the architect and the civil structure engineering.

vii. Concreting Work

Concreting work is the more important thing i am taking care. I make sure that the concrete supply in the high quality and high standard. Slump test have been carry up to make sure the concrete make the standard.

Activities 15 April 2012 to 01 May 2012

i. Concreting to the Helipad Landing

I arranging sub contractor to do the concreting to the helipad part by part and finish the concreting to the helipad landing in one week. I also make sure the concrete in high quality of standards (No bleeding or any others of defects).

ii. Construct the architectural work ( Brick Wall and Plastering )

I arranged the sub contractor to lay the brick wall including stiffener and lintel on it. The plastering work was follow after the brick wall finish. I am making sure the workman ship in standard of quality.

Activities 01 May 2012 to 07 May 2012

i. Painting Work

After i get the confirmation types and codes of the paint. I arrange the sub contractor to start with the painting work. I observe the work man ship and try to avoid any error and mistake done by the sub contractor. The client gives some opinion and request on the additional work.

ii. Tiling Work

The architect confirmed the code of the tiles. The laying work starts after the screeding work has been done. In this stage i check the workman ship of the workers like flatness and none hollowness of the tiles.

iii. Electrical and Mechanical Work

In this stage M&E team moved in to settle their work, my duty just to arrange to coordinate with them and no further delay of the work.

Activities 07 May 2012 to 15 May 2012

i. Defect Work and Touch up Work

I do the checking with the architect and client to the structure and architectural work. I will make sure all the defects work. The defects list will prepare to sub contractor, I will make sure the sub contractors to touch up the defect. The defects are giving time about 5 day to complete it and hand over to client.

6.0 Problems Happened During Planning & Construct of Project

Normally every project must have facing some problems either in stage planning or construct until finishing of the project. However any problems either serious or non serious, it should have way to overcome, especially when we doing early stage of planning,

However, i also facing some problems when i doing Helipad with guard house and operation office project during the planning and construct stage. The problems facing during the construct & planning the project are as below:

i. There are some discrepancies between specification of helipad consultant and architect. In the drawing of architectural, the fencing is too near to the helipad landing. It is 3 meters away from landing of the helipad. The helipad consultant claimed that it is not follow the safety specification of the helipad rules which is giving dangerous to the pilot during landing the helicopter. The helipad consultant advise that the fencing distant at least 6m away from the helipad itself. However the space is limited between the helipad and fencing, and this problem become an argument between architect, consultant of helipad and client. Due to the issue, it may effects the time frame of project completion since it should take time to have a decision.

ii. Late confirmation on architectural material by the client. Client took some time to confirm due to their internal problems, and it may effect the project completion time extended.

iii. There are some addition work requested by the architect and client. Although the client allowed us to claim the addition as variation order but the work must be completed in the same agreed time, and this may let us facing the risk of project cannot completed on time.

iv. The climate also a problem during the construction. Some of the unexpected problems also may delay the project time frame. As an example, during the raining day, we are unable to do the casting, especially for the helipad and the column of the building. The other works such as formwork and steel work also affected.

v. There are also some problems occur among the sub contractor due to the poor management and weak communication among the contractor with the work. For example the sub contractor did not storage their cement properly. The cement damage by the rain due to not covered properly. The workers of sub contractor also make complaint that they are being paid salary late.

vi. The sub contractor not agreed to work over time because it will make their cost budget increased and they might face the risk in making loss.

7.0 The ways to overcome the problems

i. The architect, the helipad consultant and the client organised a meeting among themselves. After the meeting, there is a deal that the architect must follow the specification of safety by the helipad consultant. The problem of distance areas, the client agreed to extend the fencing until the next landside. The client will ready more space for the fencing area and we need to cooperate and proceed.

ii. The client agreed to give EOT (extend of time) to the main contractor but not much. We have to rearrange the plan to meet the time frame.

iii. We must have extract work shift, even night shift to make sure we can complete the addition work which requested by client on time to avoid project completion time delayed. All the expenses incurred , such as the over time claim is agreed bear by the client

iv. Proper work arrangement is part of my work scope. I must managed properly so all work can process in smooth even in raining day.

v. I also play an important role between sub contractor and client to communicate and minimise their conflict and ensure the project process smoothly.
