Tabor Graduation - Class of 2011 Geoff Morrow Encouragement Award On April 21st, Tabor celebrated the achievements of the graduating class of 2011. One of the features of the 2011 Graduation was the presentation of the Geoff Morrow Encouragement Award. Geoff Morrow, was a friend of Tabor Adelaide and acted as a mobiliser for Wycliffe Bible Translators Australia for over 30 years. The primary role of Wycliffe Australia is to train and support Australian Christians who wish to live cross culturally and use their skills to give practical assistance to local communities undertaking Bible translation projects or to establish new ones. Geoff had a passion for God and people and wanted others to share that passion, especially cross-culturally. For this reason, following Geoff’s call home to be with the Lord in July 2008, he and the Morrow family, assisted Wycliffe Bible Translators Australia in creating the Geoff Morrow Award. The award is presented to a Tabor Adelaide student majoring in Intercultural Studies, within the Ministry, Theology and Culture school, to provide financial assistance towards a supervised field education trip to a destination of the recipient’s choosing. This year’s recipient, Allison Ranson, will use the financial grant toward her 7 week trip to Israel. Here she will participate in the community of Nazareth Evangelical Theological Seminary, in Nazareth, and engage in several social action projects in the surrounding region. Alison is pictured left with David Turnbull, Senior Lecturer in Intercultural Studies and Aileen Morrow, the widow of Geoff Morrow, at this year’s graduation ceremony. Alieen currently works as the National Coordinator of the Operation Encounter Course for Wycliffe Bible Translators. Book Release Congratulations to Tabor Students Renee Bennet and Claire Richards! Congratulations Dr Frank Davies!

I am pleased to announce that the Head of Education, Frank Davies, has been awarded a Doctor of Education (Flinders) for his research in “gifted education.” His dissertation was passed “with distinction.” This is a significant personal achievement and also a significant step in Tabor Adelaide’s academic development.

Well done, Dr Frank Davies!

Deputy Principal (Academic) Tabor Adelaide

Preaching Masterclass With Dr John Goldingay

Rev Dr John Goldingay is the David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary (USA).

John joined Fuller in 1997. Before that he was the Principal and a professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at St John’s Theological College in Nottingham, England. He is the author of Old Testament Theology, vols. 1-3 (2003-2009), Walk On (2002), Men Behaving Badly (2000), To the Usual Suspects (1998), After Eating the Apricot (1996), Models for the Interpretation of Scripture (1995), and Models for Scripture (1994), as well as commentaries on Daniel, Isaiah, and Psalms. Most recently, he published Genesis for Everyone (Parts 1 and 2) and the first two volumes of the Old Testament for Everyone commentary series (Westminster John Knox, 2010). He holds membership in the Society of Biblical Literature and serves on the editorial board for the Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies.

John Goldingay is also an associate pastor at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Pasadena.

John writes:

I was brought up on that classical form of expository preaching that works by seeking to explain systematically and explicitly the central message of a text and the way its various parts contribute to this message, addressing people’s minds as clearly and directly as possible. It remains a powerful and effective means of opening up the significance of Scripture.

But it’s mainly appropriate for Bible texts that are themselves directly expository (such as the Prophets, the Sermon

on the Mount, and the Epistles).

I came to realize I needed an approach to preaching that works the way that stories themselves work and didn’t just make the story the jumping-off point for direct teaching. The first time I tried this, I quaked at the knees, feeling I was taking people back to an old-fashioned Sunday School. Yet I don’t remember ever receiving more appreciative feedback from a sermon. I proved to myself that there is a power about stories that reaches adults as profoundly as it reaches children.

I subsequently came to realize that the Psalms communicate in a different way again. They teach people about worship and prayer, but they do so not by telling them how to worship and pray, but by showing them what worship and prayer are like.

In the sessions at Tabor Adelaide I will be talking about different approaches to preaching different kinds of texts. But of course I come as an Old Testament guy, so I will combine that question with some consideration about preaching on the Old Testament. We’ll look at preaching on...

• The Old Testament story

• Old Testament Law

• Old Testament prophecy

• The Psalms

For each session I will talk for half the time then send you off to think in small groups about a passage you might preach on. I hope you may go home with four sermons!

The Preaching Masterclass with Dr John Goldingay will be held at Tabor Adelaide on Thursday the 28th and Friday the 29th of June from 9:30-3:00pm. The cost is $100 for the 2 days (including lunches) If you are interested please register via email at [email protected]
