Obama's 'Yes, We Can' Trend andSwift BoatingBy Liza Porteus Viana (PoliticalMachine)

    Submitted at 2/19/2008 2:33:00 AM

Filed under: Democrats, BarackObama, 2008 PresidentNot only hasBarack Obama's "Yes, We Can"theme caught on like wildfire on theInternet but it apparently has createdsome commonalities between theDemocratic presidential hopeful and

    some foreign leaders, as well.

Tatars tan President Mint imerShaimiyev's favorite catchphrase, inTatar, is Bez Buldyrabyz!" That hasthe same meaning as "Yes, We Can."Media in Tatarstan (which, by theway, is a Russian republic located inthe East European Plain,) picked upon the similarities between the twomen after they saw the "Yes, WeCan" music video on YouTube thatfeatures Will.i.am of the Black EyedPeas and a slew of other famous faceslike Scarlett Johansson, Kate Walshof ABC's "Private Practice" (formerlyof "Grey's Anatomy), and that guywho plays "Sucre" on FOX's "Prison

Break" (Amaury Nolasco). Internetportal E-Kazan.ru alleged Obamaborrowed the phrase, but Shaimiyev'sspokesman said it's probably just acoincidence.

Elsewhere, The Politicker notes thatWalter Veltroni, who quit his job asRome's (Italy) mayor to run for primeminister with the new DemocraticParty, is now using the slogan as hiscampaign motto. In his campaign

videos on YouTube - which featureU2 singing "One"in the background -all of the video text shown is inItalian, except for the very last phrase- "Yes, We Can" - which is inEnglish.

After the jump, Michelle Obama is"finally" proud of her country and herhusband says he's already seen signsof "swift boating."

Meanwhile, Obama's wife, Michelle, has had an apparent slip of the tonguethat has some of the right wingers in afrenzy. Apparently, while speakingbefore a Milwaukee crowd Monday,Michelle Obama said: "For the firsttime in my adult lifetime, I am reallyproud of my country...and not justbecause Barack has done well, butbecause I think people are hungry forchange." (You can watch the videohere)

Blogs like Redstate.com are in atizzy, saying an "African-American,Princeton-and-Harvard educatedattorney , who has achieved a great

deal in her life ... and who is marriedto an African-American man who is aU.S. Senator, has never been proud ofher country before?" The WeeklyStandard also analyzes her comments.

Jill Zuckman of the Chicago Tribune, said on MSNBC Tuesday MichelleObama's remarks are nothing to getall riled up over, saying she's not usedto speaking to huge audiences at suchpublic events before, and didn't mean

anything by it. "I don't think she wassaying she was ashamed of thecountry before," Zuckman said.

    And in other Obama news (becausewe just can't seem to get enough ofhim these days), the White Househopeful told NBC's Matt Lauer in ani n t e r v i e w t h a t h e ' s a l r e a d yexperienced some of this year's "swiftboating" by his opponents. That's the

phrase which has become mainstreampolitical jargon after the Swift BoatVeterans for Truth clobbered JohnKerry in his 2004 White House bid.

"First of all, I've had to go up againstthe Clinton machine," Obama toldLauer (an oft-used phrase by thesenator from Illinois when he tries toconvince voters he's one tough cookiewho can successfully fight againstwell-oiled Washington competitors)."We've been battle tested over thecourse of this primary."

Obama again brought up the"scurrilous" e-mails that havecirculated about him, including ones

saying he's a Muslim and that hedoesn't pledge allegiance to theAmerican flag. "That may not comeexplicitly from the RepublicanNational Committee but I think we'llprobably see some of that comingfrom the underground."

V.P. Choices for the DemsBy David Knowles (PoliticalMachine)

    Submitted at 2/19/2008 12:49:00 AM

Filed under: Democrats , 2008PresidentThough the question of whothe Democrats will pick as theirnominee for president has not yetbeen settled, there has been muchspeculation as to who might fill outthe respective V.P. slots on eachticket. Hillary Clinton and BarackObama have different needs when itcomes to a running mate, but eachwill try to find that perfect someoneto compliment, augment, bolster, orcompensate for their own relativestrengths and weaknesses. Let'shandicap a few of the possible line-ups.

First, there's the tantalizing idea ofthe "Dream Ticket." which CNN's

Wolf Blitzer aired at the Democrats'first one-on-one debate. Clinton-

    Obama, or Obama-Clinton.

While many relish the idea breakinghistory twice in the same bill, I justdon't see it happening. The longer thisrace goes, the less each candidatereally likes the other. The next long shot for the V.P. slot isJohn Edwards. Though Clinton andObama crave his endorsement aboveall others, the man who already ranfor the veep slot will most likely beoffered another position in an Obamaor Clinton administration. The words"Attorney General Edwards" have amore fitting ring to them. Edwards

pulls either candidate to the left, where support is already guaranteed.

    So who are the serious contenders?W h i l e t h e r e a r e n u m e r o u s

possibilities for each candidate, I'llstick to the top two. First let's look atClinton.

Nothing is rewarded in Clintoniancircles like loyalty. And two menwho have stayed with Hillary fromthe very beginning are former Iowagovernor Tom Vilsack, and formerIndiana governor turned Senator EvanBayh. Each is young, energetic, smartand capable. Bayh's numerous Senateposts have given him ample foreignpolicy experience, and Vilsack cantout the outside of Washington angle.

As for Obama, two choices jump out.

John McCain has already made itclear that he, like Hillary Clinton, plans to hit Obama on the experience

question. On that front he shouldconsider Bill Richardson. The man

who, on paper, had the best-lookingresume in the Dem race, wouldinstantly calm jitters about Obama'sforeign policy weakness. Another guywho has proven he can stand toe-to-toe with Republicans on the questionof defense is Virginia Senator JimWebb.

    Though we've been considering theDemocrats, I must say that JohnMcCain has a much more easydecision. Forget about short-lists, justp ick up the phone and ca l lCo n d o l e e z a R i c e .

2 Your Click and Print NewspaperPakistan Elections Sweep OutRuling PartyBy Mark Impomeni (PoliticalMachine)

    Submitted at 2/18/2008 1:00:00 PM

Filed under: Bush Administration,TerrorParliamentary elections wereheld in Pakistan today, with PresidentPervez Musharraf's ruling MuslimLeague-Q Party suffering badly at thepolls. Opposition paties, one led bythe son of assassinated former primeminister Benazir Bhutto, and theother led by former prime ministerNawaz Sharif, were each able toclaim over 100 seats in the 272 seatparliament. Musharraf's party, bycontrast, was able to hold on to only20 to 30 seats. The Pakistan PeoplesParty, Bhutto's party, won the mostseats and will be tasked with forminga government.

It is unclear at this time whetherSharif's Muslim League-N Party will join the PPP in forming a coalitiongovernment. Sharif was said to besuspicious of Bhutto and is reportedto have close ties to Islamist extremistgroups in Pakistan. Taliban and al-Qaeda linked extremists claimedresponsibi l i ty for the Bhut toassassination. Sharif was the primeminister oused from power during thecoup that brought Musharraf topower. He may now feel that theelection results have renewed hisspecial claim on the office.

Regardless of the outcome of thepower sharing negotiations, it is clearthat Musharraf's party was soundlyrejected in the elections, and that willhave an effect on U.S. policy in theregion. Pakistan is a key ally of theU.S. in the war on terror, and theUnited States needs its efforts againstthe Taliban and al-Qaeda to becontinued, even stepped up, if it is toachieve a long lasting success inneighboring Afghanistan. Taliban anda-Qaeda elements use the border withPakistan to seek refuge from U.S. and

Afghan troops. The Pentagon recentlyannounced that it was committing3,200 more Marines to southernAfghanistan in an effort to help

Afghan troops put down a stubbornTaliban insurgency. The Pentagonwas certainly counting on help fromthe Pakistani Army on its side of themountainous border.

But the events in Pakistan over thepast year: the Red Mosque standoffwhere over 100 "students" werekilled in a Pakistani commando raid, the dismissal of the Chief Justice ofPakis tan 's Supreme Court byMusharraf, numerous bombings andassassination attempts, and the Bhutoassassination; were too much forMusharraf to survive. He will remainas president for the next five years, and his crackdown against the

Tal iban and a l -Qaeda in theNorthwest Frontier Provinces is likelyto continue for a while, but hisp o s i t i o n h a s b e e n b a d l ycompromised. Some policy makers inthe United States have wondered, during times that he was somewhatless active, what a war on terrorwithout Musharraf would look like. Itapears that they may now get to findout.

Hillary's Delegate EndgameBy David Knowles (PoliticalMachine)Submitted at 2/19/2008 12:03:00 AM

Filed under: Hil lary Cl inton,Democrats, Featured StoriesHow farwill Hillary Clinton go to make sureshe gets the Democratic nomination?Readers of this column have alreadylearned of her intention to try to seatMichigan and Florida delegates in herwithout a fair re-vote. The courtshipof Super Delegates, too, has been afocal point for both Clinton andObama, with many party insidersfearing an outcome in which Obamawould win the pledged delegates,

only to have that total overturned bythe "Supers" at the convention.

Well, today comes word of yetano ther wr ink le in Cl in ton 'sincreasingly uphill quest for theWhite House. The Politico reportsthat Hillary is prepared to enact astrategy to attempt to siphon awayObama's pledgeddelegates. RogerSimon:

Hil lary Cl inton 's president ialcampaign intends to go afterdelegates whom Barack Obama hasalready won in the caucuses andprimaries if she needs them to win thenomination. This strategy wasconfirmed to me by a high-rankingClinton official on Monday. And I amnot talking about superdelegates, those 795 party big shots who are notpledged to anybody. I am talkingabout getting pledged delegates toswitch sides.

So you see, if you thought that yourvote actually mattered, you were

mistaken. Turns out it was nothingmore than a symbolic gesture. Onethat could be overturned in an instantdepending on the whimsy of long-standing party alliances.Pledged delegates are not reallypledged at all, not even on the firstballot. This has been an open secret inthe party for years, but it has neverreally mattered because there hasalways been a clear victor by the time

    the convention convened.

So how will the residents of a statelike Virginia feel if their pledgeddelegates suddenly break for HillaryClinton? While former Virginia

mayor, Doug Wilder, predicted riotsin the street should the SuperDelegates trump the pledged variety, the question of what would happen ifpledged delegates magically changedsides remains unclear.

But one neutral Democrat icoperative said to me: "If you areHillary Clinton , you know you can'tget the nominat ion just withsuperdelegates without splitting theparty. You have to go after thepledged delegates."

By now it is clear that Clinton, everthe fighter, will play every last card in

her deck before allowing Obama towrest the nomination away from her.

Another Dem Has Plagiarism ProblemBy Dave (Political Machine)

    Submitted at 2/18/2008 11:06:00 AM

Filed under: Hillary Clinton, BarackObama, 2008 PresidentThe Clinton campaign just undercutthemselves on the plagiarism front:Jake Tapper writes:I asked Clinton communicationsdirector Howard Wolfson and Rep.Jim McGovern, D-Mass, if they couldassure the public that neither Clinton

nor McGovern has ever done whatSen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, didwhen he used the rhetoric of Gov.

Deval Patrick without footnoting him. They would not.In fact, Wolfson seemed to say itwouldn't be as big a deal if it werediscovered that Clinton had "lifted"such language."Sen. Clinton is not running on thestrength of her rhetoric," Wolfsonsaid.

Plagiarism isn't even the right wordfor it of course. Borrowing terms andphrases and well worn bits of rhetoric

is not illegal or even uncommon. Noone has a trademark on hope, orchange, or whatever. It isn't bad thatObama borrowed, it might be lame, but it isn't evil. And in fact it isindeed a high compliment. if Obamauses your stuff! But the last part is incredible. IfClinton did the same, it's ok for her,

but not for Obama? That's the kind ofstuff that gets you laughed out of theroom. Another unforced error from

Team Clinton as the team aims andfires at their own big toe.

Clinton's 'Cult' of ActionBy Greg McNeilly (PoliticalMachine)

    Submitted at 2/18/2008 11:07:00 AM

Filed under: Hillary Clinton, 2008PresidentOver and over, HillaryClinton, in press release and on thestump continues to pound the theme -action is more important than words -deeds over sentiment. Clinton hassaid, in different forms, this refrain:

How will we bring about change bymaking sure we nominate and elect adoer, not a talker?Remember, it wasthis message, that got her into atroublesome historical example whenshe claimed that President LyndonJohnson was a "doer" versus thattalker Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is true, we Americans, typically seeourselves as "doers." We cherish theaction-figure over the orator.

But when you hear nearly everycampaign speech from HillaryClinton mention this demand for

deeds and action over vision andwords, it's reminiscent of the "cult ofaction;" a perspective the worldwitnessed disquietly in 1930'sGerman nihilism.

Is action quo action really what

America needs? In times passed, when the street chantcalled for action not words, nationsfell and people were enslaved.Change happened, but not the kindwe call progress. This call for actionwas for its own sake. Action, makingthe program happen, implementingthe system, is to be taken withoutreflection or thought. Action, to thosewith this perspective, is a value itself.

But words do matter. And clearly, ideas matter.

As has been quipped, small mindsdiscuss people, average minds discussevents, great minds discuss ideas.Voters deserve a vigorous discussionabout ideas and not impulsiveplatitudes or slogans about action.

    Castro Resigns,MusharrefOustedBy Justin Paulette (PoliticalMachine)

    Submitted at 2/19/2008 1:23:00 AM

It was a bad day for petty tyrants.

Following half of a decade as acommunist dictator and constantthorn in the side of the United States,Cuban leader Fidel Castro hasannounced he will resign. Theannouncement was met with subtleindifference among Cubans, andhopeful applause from the U.S. "Ibelieve that the change from FidelCastro ought to begin a period of ademocrat ic t ransi t ion," s tatedPresident Bush. However, as Castro'sbrother Raul (who has been ruling inhis s tead s ince mid-2006) ispresumed to ascend as the nextpresident, significant change is highlyunlikely.

As Mark Impomeni has thoughtfullycovered, it seems Pakistan's PervesMusharref has suffered a devastatingelectoral loss. These events, and theevents to follow, will speak to theworld's tolerance of heavy-handedrulership. Pakistan has chosen a newpath following the over-reaching ofMr. Musharref, and Cuba now has anopportunity to dissent from thedictatorship of Castro's regime.

I hope the U.S. will not shy fromsupporting the efforts of democraticmovements in these nations. Theliberty and security of people in thosecountries, as well as here in our ownnation, could depend upon ourfaithful assistance.

Excluding one-time items, OMX earned 65 cents pershare, well above Wall Streetforecasts of 52 cents per share. If youthink that the company won't fall bytoo much in the coming months, thennow could be a good time to look at abullish hedged trade on OMX.

After hitting a one-year high of$55.40 in last February, the stock hita one-year low of $17.12 in January.

OMX opened this morning at $23.87.So far today the stock has hit a low of$23.25 and a high of $24.90. As of10:30, OMX is trading at $23.75, up$1.61 (7.3%). The chart for OMXlooks bullish but deterioratingslightly, while S&P gives the stock apositive 4 STARS (out of 5) buyrating.

For a bullish hedged play on thisstock, I would consider an April bull-put credit spread below the $17.50range. A bull-put credit spread is anoptions position that combines thepurchase and sale of put options to

hedge risk in case the stock doesn't dowhat you think but still leverage nicereturns. This particular trade will

make a 4.2% return in just twomonths as long as OMX is above$17.50 at April expiration. OfficeMaxwould have to fall by more than 26%before we would start to lose money.

OMX hasn't been below $17.50 bymore than a few cents in the past yearand has shown support around $23recently. This trade could be risky ifthe US economy continues to worsen, but even if that happens, this positioncould be protected by the support thestock might find at its 50-day movingaverage, which is around $23.

8 Your Click and Print NewspaperHijacking Search: Surf Canyon and ManagedQRethink The Search ExperienceBy Erick Schonfeld(TechCrunch)

    Submitted at 2/19/2008 8:31:52 AM

Creating a new search engine seemslike a futile exercise. If Yahoo andMicrosoft cannot compete withGoogle in search, what chance does astartup have? So instead of creatingnew search engines, we are starting tosee the rise of search applications thatsit on top of existing search engines. Two recent examples are SurfCanyon, which publicly launched itsb r o w s e r a d d - o n t o d a y , a n dManagedQ, which launched its ownsite quietly a few weeks ago. Ivebeen playing around with both forabout a week. They both offerimprovements to the pared-downsearch interface that we are all usedto and point to areas where search can

be made better. Not bad for twostartups without any venture capital(Surf Canyon has raised $250,000 inangel money, and ManagedQ is runout of the founders basement in PaloAlto). Still, while both point in theright direction, neither one comesclose to offering a better overallsearch experience than Google doeson its own.Surf Canyon is an application that sitson top of regular search results. Thestartup has its own Website whereyou can conduct searches, but thebrowser add-on makes it much morepractical to use. The add-on is foreither Firefox or Internet Explorer, and essentially allows you to re-order

search results on Google, Yahoo, orWindows Live Search. (Googledoesnt like it when other Websites re-order its search rankings, but SurfCanyon doesnt rely on GooglesAPIs to do what it does and thus feelsthat it is not bound by Googlesrestrictions).

Whenever you do a search, a littlebullseye icon appears at the right ofeach result. If you click on thebullseye, Surf Canyon inserts three

recommended search results that aresimilar to the one you clicked on.They appear indented under the resultyou are trying to drill down into. Fori n s t an ce , i f y o u s ea r ch fo rtechcrunch, the three recommendedresults might be a link to TechCrunchUK, Crunchgear, and the TechCrunchTech President Primaries ( therecommended results change overtime, even for the same search). Youcan drill down two more times withinthe recommended results to keep onrefining your search. So if you clickon the bullseye again next to one ofthe recommended links, you mightget a l ink to TechCrunch onAmazons Kindle store from page 8

of the regular Google results, amention in the NYTimes Bits blogfrom page 12, or a link to theTechCrunch Facebook group frompage 5.The results are hit or miss. SurfCanyon basically gets three chancesper click to come up with a relevantrecommendation. In general, it comescloser than if you hit the Similarpages link that Google provides withevery search result, but it still feelspretty random. Showing more thanthree recommended results wouldhelp. But what I like best about SurfCanyon is the interface. It doesnttake you to another Web page. Therecommended results just appear

underneath the appropriate link. Itfeels more like an application than acumbersome Website where you haveto click through multiple pages tofind what you want. Google couldtake a lesson in interface design fromSurf Canyon here with all of its Ajaxgoodness.

ManagedQ takes the more radicalapproach. It rethought the entire userinterface to make it much morevisual. Explains founder David Stat:Search hasnt changed in a decade.Result quality has improved, but whatyou see has not changed. The searchinterface has remained stagnant at thecommand level, So why not a searchapplication, rather than create asearch engine, we can sit on top ofthe results of any search engine.Currently we use Google.

Every time you do a search onManagedQ, a grid appears on theright of the first six results so you can

visually see what is on the other sideof what is normally a blue link. If youclick on one of the images, it opensup a larger, browsable window stillwithin ManagedQ. The idea is thatyou can surf the Web without leavingthe search application.Presenting search results visually isnothing new. Sites like ViewFourhave been doing it for years. ButManagedQ combines the visualsearch wi th a gu ided searchexper ience .On the left is a list of persons, places, and things to help you refine yoursearch. ManagedQ uses naturallanguage processing (NLP) to extractthe main concepts from the entire

search bin. And it does this very fast,in a distributed way using peer-to-peer t echno logy . One o f thedrawbacks of NLP system is that theytake a lot of time to parse and chunklarge data sets. ManagedQ solves thatproblem.

When you click on a name or concepton the left, it is highlighted whereverit appears in the miniature Web pageson the right. So ManagedQ gives you

a guided search experience withsuggested terms that help you narrowyour search. If you search forBarack Obama, it will suggestrelated people like John Edwards,Hil lary Cl inton, and JohnMcCain, as well as other relatedsearch terms: Harvard University,Keynote address, Voting Record,Early life, and Senate career. The major drawback to ManagedQ isthat if you want to see beyond thefirst result grid, you have to hit aNext button at the bottom. Whenyou try to refine a search using one ofthe guided terms on the left, insteadof bringing up the search results thatcontain that term, you are stuck with

the existing grid half-filled withgrayed-out boxes that say Nomatches on them. You have to clickthrough the result set to find to findWeb pages that match, in which casethe terms are highlighted. (For moreon ManagedQ, watch the tutorial). That flaw alone makes ManagedQnot much more than an interestingexperiment at this point. SearchingGoogle is still much faster and getsyou the results you want moredirectly. But again, Google can learnsomething here. Why not offer adecent-sized image of each Websitenext to search results to givesearchers a visual cue as to whatresides on the other side of that link?

It is that extra lit t le piece ofinformation that, in some cases butnot all, could help people sort throughsearch results easier.C r u n c h N e t w o r k :MobileCrunchMobile Gadgets andApplications, Delivered Daily.

Mixx To Cluster Related Stories -Digg Should Have Done ThisBy Michael Arrington(TechCrunch)

    Submitted at 2/19/2008 2:06:27 AM

Digg competitor Mixx continues toimpress us wi th newfeatu res(although the exodus of Digg users tothem may have been short lived).A new feature launches this week onMixx called Related Items. It solves acommon problem found on Digg andother sites where multiple articles onthe same story compete with eachother to get to the home page. Oneperson may submit a story fromUSAToday. Another may submitbasically the same story but from theWashington Post. Those stories aretracked separately on Digg, and votesare split between them as usersdiscover them. The result is that the

story takes longer to get to the homepage than it otherwise should. Orworse, both make it and the story isduplicated. Digg catches duplicatesubmission for the exact same link, but they are unable to determine ifstores are related.

The Related Items feature on Mixxflags a submission when it thinks thata story is similar. A message appearsthat says We may already have thisstory! Or at least one startling similar.Take a look at the stories below. Theuser submitting the related story canthen choose to submit it anyway, oradd it as a related item to the previoussubmission. Digg also flags storiesthat may be s imilar to othersubmissions, but does not offer theability to cluster the new story to theold ones.

There is a benefit to the submitter inadding the story to the previoussubmission because the new storywill be added, too (and traffic willflow). Users benefit because they get

more information and perspectives onthe story. Heres a screen shot of howthe clustering will look (click for

    bigger view):

The clustering that will occur fromthis wil l very much resembleTechMeme, which is a great way toquickly find multiple perspectives onthe news.Mixx, which is backed by IntersouthPartners and the LA Times, is still atiny blip compared to competitorslike Digg and Reddit. Comscore saysDigg has 12 million unique monthlyvisitors, compared to about a millionon Reddit. Mixx? Theyve got just45,000. Thats probably a low count, since newer and smaller sites aremuch harder for Comscore tomeasure. but they have a long, long

Report in addition to writing them on-site.While sports writers could simplysign up for accounts at WordPress orBlogger, theyd do better to publish atBleacher Report for several reasons. The first and most compelling reasonis a better audience. The site attractssports fans and surfaces the bestcontent to the homepage afterassessing several factors such aswriter rankings, editor ratings, community ratings, and hits. Readerswho like your stuff can become yourfan and track your work alongsideothers on a special lineup page. And articles published to Bleacher

actually give an extensive amount ofcontrol over their articles to othermembers. The community serves as acollective editor that works not onlyto correct grammatical and spellingerrors but to improve the prose moregenerally. Nothing is strictly out ofbounds, including article headlines, but the original writers do have thepower to revert changes made by thecommunity. According to the sitesfounders, this group editing systemhas been a very popular featureduring the beta period.Like many sites we see these days,Bleacher Report also integratestypical social networking features.

Will YouNoodle Predict Its OwnInevitable Failure?By Michael Arrington(TechCrunch)

    Submitted at 2/18/2008 7:44:27 PM

New startup YouNoodle debuted tosome first class press coverage thismorning - a headline in the NYTimesthat reads A Start-Up Says It CanPredict Others Fate. The reallychoice quote from the article fromCEO/co-founder Bob Goodson isthis:

Give us some information, and wellgive you some idea of what thecompany will be worth in five years. The best part about the article is thatthe p red ic t ion fea tu re hasn tlaunched, so no one can see if its forreal. For now, the site is a database ofstartups with very light information.Hardly what I would considerNYTimes material. If not for theinvestors, which include FoundersFund, Peter Thiel and Max Levchin,

theres no way we would havecovered this. The NYT did cover themselvessomewhat by bringing in someventure capitalist quotes callingbullshit on the whole thing. If theirtool did such a good job, theyd raisea fund themselves and beat the tar outof us, said Paul Kedrosky, whodidnt bother to write about thecompany on his blog. And hes exactly right. Just like thepeople who say they can sell you abook and a seminar to help you getrich quick off of distressed real estate- if these guys found some sort ofmagic formula that actually predictedthe value of a startup down the road, theyd keep the information to

themselves and make, well, unlimitedamounts of money. Its hype and nonsense, and it wontwork. The NYTimes bit on it hard, but our readers are smarter. In a pollthat Duncan ran earlier the vastmajor i ty say theres no wayYouNoodle can pick winners basedon some algorithm.I propose this as a test - If and whenYouNoodle launches this magicpredictor thingy, they should run theirown founding team through it. Microsoft To AnnounceWorldWide TelescopeOn February 27By Michael Arrington(TechCrunch)

    A source close to Microsoft says thecompany will launch new desktops o f t w a r e c a l l e d W o r l d W i d eTelescope on February 27 at the TEDConference in Monterey, California.Our guess is that this is what RobertScoble was talking about last week

when he said he saw a new Microsoftproject that brought him to tears. The service will be accessed througha downloadable appl icat ion -Windows only for now is what wehear. Users will be able to pan aroundthe nighttime sky and zoom as far into any one area as the data will allow.Microsoft is said to be tapping theHubble telescope as well as ten or soearth bound telescopes around theworld for data. When you find an areayou like, you can switch to a numberof different views, such as infraredand non-visible light.Dan Farber posted his own educatedguess that the project might beWorldWide Telescope, based on the

fact that Curtis Wong and JonathanFay were involved, and hes right.Last year Fay gave a presentationcalled The WorldWide Telescope, bringing the Universe to a PC nearyou. In 1993, Wong started a projectcalled John Dobsons Universe, avirtual sky tour on a CD-ROM,narrated by John Dobson. The twobegan working together at Microsoftin 2005.From what we hear, WorldWideTelescope will be significantly betterthan Google Sky, which launched lastAugust as part of Google Earth, andthe open source Stellarium (which ishugely better than Google Skyalready). The key is the user

interface, which is seamless as youmove around the sky and zoom in andout . Much of the Photosynthtechnology is said to have been usedfor the project. And the sheer amountof data Microsoft is accessing, said tobe measured in the terabits, gives thatgreat user interface something toshow off.Look for an announcement at TED,and more at Microsofts upcomingTechFest in early March.C r u n c h N e t w o r k :CrunchBoardbecause its time for youto find a new Job2.0

Students were previously able tolicense this software at greatlyreduced prices, or got access via theirCS department at school (or throughother, less legal, means). Now theyllbe able to get the software for free.Only students in Belgium, China,Finland, France, Germany, Spain,Sweden, Switzerland, the U.K. and

mainstream media sites. In September of last year, Wikileaksfinally hit paydirt in terms of a bigstory, when they broke a $3 billioncorruption story in which the ex-president Moi of Kenya looted publiccoffers and possibly altered theoutcome of a then impending national

election. After that, several major leaks weremade through the site, including mostnotably a sensitive Guantanamo Baymanual, that afforded a rare insideglimpse into the institution where theUnited States has imprisonedhundreds of suspected terrorists since2002.In fact, the controversy over theGitmo manuals lasted on into Januaryof this year, when reports of aBavarian trojan in the middleemerged activities of the Bavarianpolice, Ministry of Justice and theProsecution office in interceptingencrypted data submitted via SSL orSkype via the internet.

    Other notable scoops by Wikileaks

Google NixesFeedBurners AllTime StatsBy Kristen Nicole (Mashable!)

    Submitted at 2/18/2008 8:21:56 PM

Google has made some bad decisionsin the past, and doesnt always handleits customers with white gloves.

When the company launched StreetViews maps without blurring outpersonally identifying informationlike faces and license plate numbers, Iscratched my head. And when Googledecided to get rid of its premiumvideo services without letting itscustomers keep the videos theydpaid for, I felt the customers pain.So in another questionable move byGoogle, its somewhat slighted itsweb publisher clientle by getting ridof All Time stats for FeedBurnerdata. Thats not to say that theres nodata left at alldaily, weekly andmonthly numbers are still availablefor your use. But as Louis Graynoted, Google liberated FeedBurners

premium services by making themfree, so is this a sad result of gettingwhat you pay for?

The effect that this change could haveis rather far reaching. Several blogsand other web publications rely onFeedBurner s t a t s to pos t ionthemselves in regards to other sites, and for comparison purposes of theirown progress. For any publicationsout there that look to such data as amarker on their growth and currentvaluation, it looks like theyll need to

begin compiling their own data.Perhaps they can start by usingmashup tools like Strata, which arealso free.In regards to those services out there, like RatingBurner, that look tocomprise FeedBurners data in orderto conclude some comprehensive datafor more far-reaching purposes, the

loss of such data from FeedBurnercould essentially kill their business.Knowing Google, its rather unlikelythat the All Time stats will be goneforever. Whether it returns as apremium service or is merely offeredin a different capacity, I imaginetheres a possibility that well beseeing the option return in one way oranother, somewhere down the line.[image credit: Louis Gray]ShareThis

Variety Launches aBranded JobsterNetworkBy Kristen Nicole (Mashable!)Submitted at 2/19/2008 4:30:14 AM

Printed publications have been doinga lot to get addi t ional brandrecognition and ad support in theonline world, and lately, a lot of thishas been in the way of integratednetworking solutions, with existingnetworks and with networks of theirown. One area thats been meldingwith social networks on a larger scaleis the job sector, as weve seen withMonster, and entertainment newspublication Variety is launching asocial network for this purpose.

In conjunction with Jobster, this newnetwork, called The Biz, is actuallya white-labeled version of the popular

job-finding service. This networkisnt just for Variety to reach out topotential employees, but its a self-contained network where employerscan post jobs and seek out potential

new hires. As Jobster is known for itstake on social networking for thepurpose of enabling users to buildrelationships and leverage thoserelationships in the job-hunting andhiring process, The Biz allowsVariety to offer both ends of thisspectrum for entertainment jobs, under a brand that people recognize. What Jobster hasnt fully begun tooffer, however, are some of thenewer, emerging tools that employerscan now use to network with eachother for the specific process ofseeking out new employees. Whilesuch newer tools are still in the

experimental phase, I do wonder atsuch white label offerings ability tofully extend all the necessarynetworking opportunities. However, one thing remains certain: The Bizlets Variety extend its network brandacross the web in a rather practicalway.ShareThis

Thisact by Comcast was emphasized bythe fact that it has filed a statement indefense of the case brought against itby the FCC a few months back. Andin doing so, Comcast did somethingthat could make the company appeareven less qualified to make suchexecutive decisions in the regulationof broadband dispersement. As the P2P blog picked up via EdFeltens Freedom to Tinkerblog, thedefini t ion of a Bi tTorrent aspresented by Comcast is in fact onethat was used in a speech by amemb er o f Co n g re s s . N o w ,

considering the potentially graveoutcome of Comcast as a result of thecase brought against it by the FCC,and the rather official nature ofsuch a case, I cant be entirelysurprised that Comcast is looking toCongress for a respected definitionof what BitTorrent actually does. This aside, the biggest problem withComcasts use of a Congressmansspeech quote being used as definitivein regards to BitTorrent is the factthat its down right incorrect. Thisleaves room for a lot of holes to bepoked in Comcasts argument, but itsreally a matter of the FCC being ableto poke them.ShareThis

According toDealBook, waging whats known as aproxy fight against Yahoo will costthe company about $20-30 million, versus an additional $1.4 billion forevery dollar they add to theiracquisition offer. So what are the odds of Microsoftsuccessfully acquiring Yahoo viaproxy fight? While everyone is expecting forMicrosoft to dig just a little bit deeperinto their pockets (speculations saidthat $35 per share is a possibility) totry and change Yahoos mind, BillGates is playing it tough, sayingtheyre not raising the bid.He made this quite clear in aninterview with Reuters: We canafford to make big investments in the

engineering and marketing that needsto get done. We will do that with orwithout Yahoo. In other words, ifYahoo doesnt want the 44.6 bil, theyre gonna spend it elsewhere: atleast the $19 billion they have incash.

Of course, we all know that Microsoftis only acting indifference. In fact, ifthey dont buy Yahoo, theyll have atough time turning those 19 billiondollars into a web platform that willbe a decent competitor to Google;thats why they went unsolicited onYahoo in the first place.Gates, now a part-timer at Microsoft, had this to add: There is nothingnew in terms of the process. Wevesent our letter and weve reinforcedthat we consider that its a very fair

The viewer is presented with the storyof Derek Reese, who is Kyle Reese'sbrother and John Connor's uncle. Thisis done in the style of "future-flashes"in which we see Derek's story post-Judgment Day and learn a lot of newinformation that answers somequestions and creates a few more. Ialso got a little nerdy thrill out of

myriad of references to the firstTerminator movie (more on thatshortly).

I should have recognized the set usedfor the Resistance shelter. Was the"Hang In There Baby" lion picture inthe first movie? If so, I don't recall it.I did like how they retouched the

Linda Hamilton photo to put in LenaHeadey's image instead. It's like onethose time changes from the movieBack To The Future in which you seetime changing around the travelers.Continue reading The Sarah ConnorChronicles: Dungeons & Dragons
