BOOK REVIEW

1. Title : THE BIG SHORT Inside the doomsday machine

Author : Michael Lewis Publisher : ALLEN LANE One more book on the financial meltdown of 2008 – why on earth should anyone read it?

Here’s the answer: because Michael Lewis has written it. But caveats. Lewis is not the most erudite writer on financial matters. There are many others who understand the subject better than he does. Second, Lewis has not written the most comprehensive book on the subject either.

2. Title : YOUR MONEY MILESTONES Author : Moshe A. Milevsky Publisher : FT Press The title marks one believe this could be a how-to manual on financial planning. Its slow

start can be disappointing, but you will soon realize it looks at the psychology behind key financial decisions in life, backed by amazing research. For example, the author advocates the principle of ‘consumption smoothing’ to have a uniform consumption stream over our life by borrowing when necessary, typically early in life, and save when necessary, later in life.

3. Title : 13 BANKERS : THE WALL STREET TAKEOVER AND THE NEXT FINANCIAL MELTDOWN Author : Simson Johnson, James Kwak Publisher : RANDOM HOUSE

Page 22: Library Bulletin June 2010 - jiml.ac.in Bulletin June 2010.pdf · CURRENT AWARENESS BULLETIN, JUNE 2010 ... 1078 Integration vs segmentation in the global equities markets / Tulin

(22)

Recuperating from the financial crisis of 2008, Wall Street is yet again on the brink of a potential economic meltdown as six big banks threaten to release havoc with their risky practices. Johnson and Kwak provide a historical overview of America’s financial ideology, spanning over 100 years, to reveal the flaws that plague Wall Street and the ways to mitigate dangers.

4. Title : REWORK: CHANGE THE WAY YOU WORK FOREVER Author : Jason Fried, David Heinemeier Publisher : CROWN BUSINESS Built on the principle that only destruction can lead to creation, the authors of this book

preface their arguments by discarding all conventional wisdom about the ways to progress in business. They provide a radical modus operandi and advocate that successes in a business cycle are more educative than failures. Replete with practical ideas, and a sharp focus on productive values, the book picks up from the where the authors’ previous 37Signals left off, laying out a concrete pathway for finishing projects and getting the job done right.

5. Title : THE SURPRISING SOLUTION : CREATING POSSIBILITY IN A SWIFT AND SEVERE WORLD Author : Bruce Piasecki Publisher : SOURCEBOOKS Sustainable development is like socialism; a hat that has lost its shape since it has been

worn by too many heads, said political scientist C.M. Joad. With innovation getting mixed with sustainable development, it becomes a strong force that the corporate world struggles to control.

6. Title : THE INVISIBLE HANDS : HEDGE FUNDS OFF THE RECORD: RETHINKING REAL MONEY; Author : Steven Dronby Publisher : WILEY The book focuses on the financial experts who successfully managed hedge funds and

effectively followed risk-management techniques during the recent financial crisis. Author Steven Dronby provides a guide for financial security by showcasing how some of the most proficient fund managers approach money management, and how they sailed through market crashes. The book analyses some fundamental issues about investment and portfolio constructions in the hedge fund business in the post-crisis world.

7. Title : NEGOTIATING PEACE IN DEEPLY DIVIDED SOCIETIES : A SET OF SIMULATIONS Author : Radha Kumar Publisher : SAGE It is a violent society that we inhabit in on this planet – mass murders, wars, ethnic

violence, rapes and other atrocities, destruction of heritage and places of worships, communal clashes – the list is endless. So is the pursuit for peace, and such strong is this quest that, in modern times, many universities and institutions globally have started offering specialized training programmes and courses in the study of conflicts, as well as ways and means to resolve these. The volume by Radha Kumar is an initiative in this direction.

8. Title : GLOBALIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Author : Ashwini Deshpande Publisher : Oxford The focus of this volume is on new thinking and new research by young scholars on

issues ranging from trade regimes and exchange rate policies; financial fragility, currently convertibility and monetary policy; labour and employment; issues in cross-national growth comparisons; lessons from the Chinese growth experience, etc.

The layout of the text begins with an introduction by the editor followed by an essay on the shrinking policy space available to the developing countries, so much so that their sovereignty as regards economic policy is vanishing, owing to Washington domination. This is followed by 13 essays, each about a specific country and a specific issue.

9. Title : LOOKING EAST TO LOOK WEST Author : Sunanda K. Datta-Ray Publisher : PENGUIN VIKING It is essential to understand Singapor’s ties with India over the years to give a perspective

to India’s ‘Look East’ policy. And for this, understanding Lee Kuan Yew, the first prime minister of the island republic, is crucial. After all, for Lee, Asia would be “submerged” if India did not “emerge”. Here, Sundand K. Datta-Ray’s LOOKING EAS TO LOOK WEST gains relevance. It gives interesting and deep insight into the relations between the two countries and elaborates how Lee’s Mission India laid the seeds of the current Singapore. The author has interviewed Lee extensively for the book.

10. Title : CHINA AND INDIA : PROSPECTS FOR PEACE Author : Jonathan Holslag Publisher : COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

Page 24: Library Bulletin June 2010 - jiml.ac.in Bulletin June 2010.pdf · CURRENT AWARENESS BULLETIN, JUNE 2010 ... 1078 Integration vs segmentation in the global equities markets / Tulin

China and India are the two major pillars of the global market economy and potential trade super powers. These Asian giants, housing two-fifth of the world’s population, adopted economic reforms almost at the time, though at varied pace. But these reforms changed the relationship between the two, notes Jonathan Holslag, research head at the Brussels Institute of Contemporary China studies. The transformation from closed, socialist economies to liberal-market economies also transformed India and China from enemies to “trading states”.

11. Title : FROM WORKPLACE TO PLAYSPACE Author : Pamela Meyer Publisher : WILEY To initiate innovative thinking and practices, it is crucial to change the perception of

classifying innovation as non-work. Suggesting a change, Pamela Meyer plays up the concept of playspaces, which exist within an organisation’s workplace, but escape the official system of performance. Arguing against the notion of work and play being mutually exclusive, Meyer cites various examples of firms who have successfully integrated the playspace approach into their business models.

12. Title : SUPER CORP : VANGUARD COMPANIES CREATE INNOVATION, PROFITS, GROWTH AND SOCIAL GOOD Author : Rosabeth Moss Kanter Publisher : VIVA BOOKS Supercorp focuses on the idea of doing well by doing good. A Harvard professor who

specializes on strategy, innovation and leadership, Rosabeth Moss Kanter says vanguard organizations are those that are at the forefront of globalization, change and success even in times of adversities such as the financial crisis of 2008.

The driving forces behind this success are organizational vision and values, and their use to determine decision making, behaviour, culture of innovation that seeks ideas from all sources, treatment of employees as volunteers and letting them manage projects, and action on social and environmental issues through contribution of capabilities rather than mere donations.

The book is based on three years of research that involved 350 interviews in 20 countries. It is narrated through the examples of companies that have exhibited commendable leadership – IBM and P&G from America, Cemex from Mexico, Omron Corporation from Japan and Banco Real from Brazil.

13. Title : CAPITAL IDEAS Author : Jeffrey M. Chwieroth Publisher : Princeton University

Page 25: Library Bulletin June 2010 - jiml.ac.in Bulletin June 2010.pdf · CURRENT AWARENESS BULLETIN, JUNE 2010 ... 1078 Integration vs segmentation in the global equities markets / Tulin

(25)

Last year, following the global economic crisis, Oliver Blanchard, chief economist and head of research at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) questioned the orthodoxy of a low inflation target of 2-3 per cent that central banks in developed economies take as the Holy Grain. In a paper, ‘Rethinking Macroeconomic Policy’. Co-written with his colleagues Giovanni Dell’ Ariccia and Paolo Mauro, he also said government intervention in the economy may not be a bad thing either, nor should the current account deficit – the import export gap should be less than 2 per cent of the GDP.

14. Title : DISASTER-PROOF YOUR CAREER : TACTICS TO SURVIVE, THRIVE AND KEEP AHEAD IN THE WORKPLACE Author : Patrick Forsyth Publisher : KOGAN PAGE While most career management guides culminate at a point where the individual lands

the right job, this book focuses primarily on what comes next. Patrick Forsyth provides a step-by-step approach to securing your existing job by fine-tuning your expertise to match challenges that arise periodically. Emphasising the importance of performance appraisals and the changing work environment in an organization, the author tells us how an employee can gain rewards and validation by remaining career fit.

15. Title : ECONOMY, DEMOCRACY AND THE STATE : THE INDIAN EXPERIENCE Author : Ramashray Roy Publisher : SAGE Ramashray Roy, a political philosopher, has been associated with several scholarly

bodies. He discusses, in this book, the centrality now achieved by economic forces in India since independence, and how it has affected the government, as well as the nature and direction of economic growth. The constitution, which was framed after the British left, can be summarized (as has been done by Granville Austin, quotes Roy) into three important strands, they being: protecting and enhancing national unity and integrity; establishing institutions of democracy; and fostering a social revolution to better the lot of the masses of Indians.

16. Title : PUBLIC RELATIONS : PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES Author : Iqbal S. Sachdeva Publisher : Oxford University Press The practice of PR is now becoming more professional than ever. Capturing the nuances

of a powerful profession such as PR and offering it as a semi-text book is a difficult task.

Page 26: Library Bulletin June 2010 - jiml.ac.in Bulletin June 2010.pdf · CURRENT AWARENESS BULLETIN, JUNE 2010 ... 1078 Integration vs segmentation in the global equities markets / Tulin

(26)

However, Iqbal S. Sachdeva – a practicing PR professional with several decades of experience and also former secretary of the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), the industry mouthpiece – has been able to achieve this.

This book, though a first of its kind, is academic in nature, aimed more at students than practicing professionals, as it provides cues and templates for action by PR professionals on how to write a press release, the chairman’s speech, etc.

17. Title : BEYOND DEALMAKING Author : Meanie Billings - Yun Publisher : WILEY This book shows the key to winning unbeatable, long-term results in today’s complex

economic landscape is to negotiate solid long term relationships.

18. Title : TOWARD THE NEXT ECONOMICS AND OTHER ESSAYS Author : Peter F. Drucker Publisher : HARVARD BUSINESS PRESS Why would anyone re-release in 2010 a collection of papers written during 1972-80? Why

at all would anyone buy it? You would, if you are smart. Peter Drucker’s publishers seems to have figured this out; hence this timely release.

A lot has changed from the 1970s when management literature was at the fringes of mainstream policy literature.

The volume has 12 essays. They reflect on Drucker’s thoughts on a slew of subjects – the new emerging economic paradigm, the environment, technology, the role of international firms in developing countries, management practices, corporate governance, interaction between science and industry, Japanese management practices, and (interestingly) the role of art.

19. Title : POWERING THE FUTURE : A SCIENTIST’S GUIDE TO ENERGY INDEPENDENCE Author : DANIEL B. BOTKIN Publisher : FT PRESS The current energy crisis that threatens global sustainability has received due attention

from academics and policy makers. It has set off a series debates on the viability of alternate energy resources and reducing the use of fossil fuels. Daniel Botkin provides an extensive road

Page 27: Library Bulletin June 2010 - jiml.ac.in Bulletin June 2010.pdf · CURRENT AWARENESS BULLETIN, JUNE 2010 ... 1078 Integration vs segmentation in the global equities markets / Tulin

(27)

map to energy independence. He also talks about the challenges that lie ahead. Botkin analyses the scientifically - and economically - realisable prospects of using solar, wind and hydroelectric power, among others. He also probes the loopholes in the current energy distribution system.

20. Title : THE INVENTION OF ENTERPRISE Author : David S. Landes, Joel Mokyr & William J. Baumol Publisher : PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRESS Tracking the evolution of hundreds of entrepreneurship models and documenting their

short- and long – term ramifications, THE INVENTION OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP is well timed.

The preface of the book states that “the practical utilization of inventions and their indispensable contribution to economic growth will be below the levels they might have otherwise achieved without the intervention of entrepreneurs”. Starting on this note, the book attempts to explore entrepreneurship since antiquity, seeking commonalities and providing an insight into the processes that drive and sustain entrepreneurship.

The book probes whether entrepreneurship was shaped by history or vice versa. And this carefully crafted study has a whole new perspective of both history and entrepreneurship. It brings out the role played by several forms of entrepreneurship – redistributive, productive, corrosive, replicative and more – in the rise and fall of civilizations, economies and nations.

21. Title : HOW TO PLAY THE GAME AT THE TOP : THE 9 RULES FOR CONSUMMATE CORPORATE EFFECTIVENESS Author : Fenorris Pearson Publisher : AGATE Perhaps one of the most pressing and never fully – answered questions employees reflect

upon is how to advance in career and what would set this in motion. Having worked with corporations such as Dell and Motorola, Fenorris Pearson lays down nine steps to be successful in today’s challenging corporate environment. The book discloses techniques – learnt through trial and error – to outsmart your peers. The trick is to profit from the lessons gained through the author’s varied corporate encounters, and use them to climb up the ladder.
