INTRODUCTION TO THE EMERGENCY FLIP GUIDE

This booklet outlines how Law Library staff should respond to some types of emergencies. This guide is not

comprehensive. It is a reference to assist you in responding to the emergency. In responding to any emergency, remember

these three things:1. Do not take unnecessary risks.

    2. There is no substitute for remaining calm.

    3. Always use common sense.

ForMedical and Fire emergencies call 911.

ForCollections emergencies (events that threaten the Librarys physical collections), call the

Preservation Emergency Phone (24 hours) at 203-530-5414.

For any emergencies that are a threat to personal safety (e.g. bomb threat, explosion) call On-Campus

Emergency at 911, and then notify Library Administration at 432-7593.

For non-emergency facilities-related issues, call Shana Jackson at 432-7593, or email her at

    TORNADO

What to do during a tornado. (www.fema.gov)

Familiarize yourself with these terms to help identify a tornado hazard:

Tornado Watch - Tornadoes are possible. Remain alert for approaching storms. Watch the sky

and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for information.

Tornado Warning - A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.

    Take shelter immediately.

If you are under a tornado WARNING, seek shelter immediately!

    If you are in: Then:

    A structure (e.g.

    residence, small

    building, school, nursing

    home, hospital, factory,

    shopping center, high-

    rise building)

Go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement,

storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement,

go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet,

interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside

walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside.

Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your headand neck. Do not open windows.

VehicleGet out immediately and go to the lowest oor of a sturdy, nearby

    building, or storm shelter.

    Outside with no shelter

Lie at in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with

your hands. Be aware of the potential for ooding.

Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, at

    location.

Never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas in a car

or truck. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter.

Watch out for ying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes

    most fatalities and injuries.

    SPECIAL NEEDS GUIDELINES

    1. Preparation for those with disabilities

Get involved in emergency and evacuation planning. If you are a part of the discussion, you can provide information on your specic abilities and limitations and tell people how

best to provide you with effective assistance. Practice drills increase skills and instill condence in ones ability to cope in anemergency.

Know how to get to all the exits and review them regularly. Report safety hazards (re extinguishers, blocked exits, furniture, etc). Teach your support network how to operate your equipment in an emergency (i.e. how todisengage the gears of a power wheelchair).

If you are hard of hearing or deaf, practice having co-workers communicate importantinformation to you through gestures.

If you are blind, have co-workers practice guiding you. If you use a service animal, include the animal in drills. Carry emergency health information and emergency contact numbers with you at alltimes. Make multiple copies of this information to keep in your emergency supply kits, car, workplace, wallet, wheelchair pack, backpack, etc.

    2. During evacuation

If you need assistance evacuating a building, determine the most direct evacuation route. Identify your evacuation assistant. This person should know how to help you withoutcausing injury to themselves, to you, or to others, even if you need to be lifted or carried.

Be prepared to quickly give critical information on how someone can assist you withoutcausing injury. Take charge and practice how to quickly explain to people how to bestassist you.

Dont wait until an emergency occurs: prepare now! Talk to your supervisor, a buildingmanager, or the Universitys Ofce for Equal Opportunity programs. They can help youthrough the planning process.

    PERSONAL SAFETY

Top 10 Personal Safety Tips - PROVIDED BY THE YALE UNIVERSITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

    1. No lock works UNLESS YOU LOCK IT.

    2. Lock public doors or gates to your apartment building, or ofce. Lock your doors when you leave your

ofce or apartment. Lock your doors before you go to sleep. Always lock windows that are accessible

    from the outside.

    3. Never leave a public door propped open, even for a friend. Leave spare keys with a trusted neighbor or

friend, never hidden near your door.

    4. Take precaution in safeguarding your valuables (i.e. laptops, cell phones I-Pads etc.) Do not leave

valuables unsecured and unattended. Register your bikes and laptops (more info at http://publicsafety.

yale.edu). Write down the Serial Numbers of valuable items.

    5. Keep house and car keys on separate key chains. When leaving your car for service, or at a parking lot,

leave only the car keys. Never attach your address to your keychain. Yale urges you never to attach your

Yale ID tag to your keychain.

    6. Identify visitors through a window or peephole before opening the door.

    7. Request that service people show proper credentials before you let them in. If necessary, call the

company to verify employment. Do not lend your keys or Yale ID tag to anyone.

    8. If a stranger asks to use your telephone, politely refuse. Offer to call for assistance for them.

    9. Please do not walk alone at night. Remain aware of your surroundings (i.e. remove ear buds.) Uselighted pathways. When well-lit areas are not available, please call 432-WALK (432-9255). A uniformed

Security Ofcer will be dispatched to your location and escort you to your on-campus destination. You

will recognize these ofcers by their white shirts, navy pants, prominent SECURITY labels, and an

ofcial security badge on the left side of their chest.

    10. Sign up for the Bulldog Mobile Program: http://publicsafety.yale.edu/bulldog-mobile. Bulldog Mobile

gives students, staff and faculty on campus an effective way to coordinate with Yale Police (YPD) via

mobile device to help provide a safe and secure campus environment. With Bulldog Mobile, you can use

your cell phone as a personal security device to activate the GPS tracking technology and escort timer

    options.

    11. Report to police any unusual or suspicious activity near your home, room, or around your neighbors

homes or apartments. Program the Yale Police Phone number into your cell phone: 203-432-4400 OR

TEXT at 67283, type yaletip and add a space, after the space type a message, hit send.
