Summer is just around the corner and it is time to be “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” at The Dalles-Wasco County Library. This summer readers of all ages will explore all things sports and fitness at The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library. Activities include performers, a one-time only kid’s book club, maker kids and little makers, kids’ yoga, LEGO time and much more. The library will be kicking off summer reading on Wednes-

day, June 15th from 1—3 p.m. at City Park, located at 707 Union Street. At this event all summer reading participants may pick up a summer reading bag (as long as supplies last) their summer reading packet and BINGO card. The 2016 Summer Reading Program is open to babies through adults, with programs, prize drawings, storytimes and more. This summer the library will be offering the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” reading challenge for parents of children age 0 to starting kindergarten as part of the summer reading program. A special teddy bear picnic will take place on Thursday, June 23rd, at 10:30 a.m. at City Park. Cinda Johnson will be performing. Bring your favorite teddy bear, hat and blanket. The library is looking for volunteers age 16 and older, to help us during summer library programs and story times. If you enjoy being around kids and are interested in volunteering no more than two hours a week, please pick up a volunteer form at the library. Types of activities include preparing summer reading materials for distribution, helping during the summer reading kickoff event and programs, assisting with story time activity preparation and helping at the maker programs for very young makers (ages 5-8) and kids as makers (ages 9-11). Watch for more summer reading information and details on the library’s website at www.wascocountylibrary.com.

This month’s conversation will focus on Death with Dignity. What can we do to prepare for our own end of life care? Are there options? Future conversations will based on what you want to know about.

Julie Reynolds and Colleen Ballinger will lead this recurring, facilitated discus-sion on one of the hardest things to talk about: death and dying. The discussion will take place the fourth Tuesday of each month. The next discussion will be at 6:30 p.m. on May 24th, in the library’s meeting room.

Julie Reynolds has a doctorate in Systems Science, and a graduate certificate in gerontology from Portland State University. She looks at death as a natural part of a person's life, and doesn't think it's scary to talk about. Colleen Ballinger is a Reg-istered Nurse that is a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse. She has been caring for, and learning from terminally ill people for over 20 years.

Movies at the library Yes, we really do show movies at the library; we even have popcorn available (while it

Parents: please screen this talk to determine if it is appropriate for your youth.

The discussion on May 5th will be Brené Brown: The power of vulnerability. Brené Brown studies human connection – our ability to empathize, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity.

For more information, or to be on the email list for this event, please contact Jenny Loughmiller at:

[email protected], or call/text at 541-298-1231.

What’s happening at Southern Wasco County Library Hoop dancer, Kevin Locke Renowned hoop dancer, Kevin Locke, will do three performances in Maupin on May 13th. He will do a school assembly program at 9:30 a.m. at the South Wasco County School District. Followed by a Flute Soiree, a short flute concert, at the Southern Wasco County Library at 1:00 p.m. that afternoon. That evening at 7:00 p.m. there will be a performance featuring hoop dancing, flute music and story tell-ing at the high school gym, located at 699 Fourth Street, in Maupin. Kevin Locke is known throughout the world as a visionary Hoop Dancer, a tra-ditional storyteller, the preeminent player of the indigenous Northern Plains flute, cultural ambassador, recording artist, and educator. Kevin is Lakota (Hunkpapa Band of Lakota Sioux) and Anishinabe. While his early instructions were received from his immediate family and community, from his extended family in every part of the world Kevin has learned many lessons in global citizenship and how we each can draw from our individual heritages to create a vibrant, evolving global civiliza-tion embracing and celebrating our collective heritage. Kevin Locke is acknowledged to be the pivotal force in the now powerful revival of the indigenous flute tradition, which teetered on the brink of extinction in the latter half of the 20th century. Kevin was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts, which recognized him as a "Master Traditional Artist who has con-tributed to the shaping of our artistic traditions and to preserving the cultural diversity of the United States." He won the Album of the Year Award at the Native American Music Awards for his CD "Earth Gift" in 2009. As a folk artist he is often characterized as being from a tribal-specific background only. But Kevin draws from deep wellsprings of knowledge, distilled and refined over many generations, yielding a profound sense of the universality of the human spirit and its inclination toward harmony, balance, beauty, peace, and the sacred. Through movement and dance, sound and music, Kevin conveys this universal spirit through his stories, music, humor, and dance, both in per-formance and workshop and lecture settings.

This event is sponsored by the Southern Wasco County Library and made possible through grants from the Wasco County Cultural Trust and Libraries of Eastern Oregon/ArtPlace America.
