What is Library2Go?

Library2Go is a service subscribed to by the Coos

County Libraries. It provides audiobooks, videos, and e-books that you can download directly to your home

computer. In many cases, titles can also be transferredto portable mp3 players, e-readers, or even burnt to

CD.

A personal computer is required to use Library2Go. To get the most out of the service, a

high-speed internet is also desirable. While dial-up internet users will likely be able to use

e-book titles relatively easily, audiobooks and videos will take an extremely long time todownload. Library2Go requires a computer running Windows 98 SE or newer or

Macintosh OS 10.4.9 or newer. It is also available for some mobile phones. E-book titlesrequire the free Adobe Digital Editions software or similar e-book software, such as

Sony's Reader Library. Instructions for installing Adobe Digital Editions as well as the

software required to use Library2Go (called OverDrive Media console) are available onthe website.

Library2Go titles are available in the following file formats:

 Audiobooks: WMA and MP3

 E-Books: EPUB and PDF

 Videos: WMV

The titles on Library2Go use a technology called Digital Rights Management (DRM). This

technology helps prevent unauthorized copying of the files and copyright infringementgenerally. Unfortunately, devices that cannot use the above-listed formats or that are

unable to to use the DRM technology cannot be used with some Library2Go titles. Some

titles are not available for use with popular devices such as Apple mp3 players (iPods andiPhones) or the Amazon Kindle e-reader.

Accessing Library2Go

There are two simple ways to access Library2Go. To start off, open your web browser(such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari). Then you can do either of the following:

1. Type http://www.cooslibraries.org into the address bar at the top of the browser

and press Enter. This will take you to the website for the Coos County Libraries.

From there, click the blue link for Library2Go on the right side of your screen.

2. You can also go directly to Library2Go by typing http://library2go.lib.overdrive.com

into the address bar of your web browser and pressing Enter.

The Library2Go main page

When you first access Library2Go, you'll see the following page. We'll cover each of the

elements more in detail later in the walkthrough.

Finding E-books Online, p.3

On the Coos County Libraries website, click the blue Library2Go link on the right side of the page to access

Library2Go.

Menus:

Allow you to manage your

account, checked out items,

and generally navigate the site.

Handy search bar:

Search for items you

want, just like your

library's website.

Browsing menus:

In addition to providing

help, these side menus

let you browse the

various titles available.

Content area:

This section of the

website will display your

search results or a list of

titles for you to browse.

Installing OverDrive Media Console

In order to use many of the titles on Library2Go, particularly,

the audiobooks and videos, you need to install a free piece ofsoftware called OverDrive Media Console (OMC). To install

OMC, look for a small menu on the left side of the Library2Gowebsite called Software (the menu is shown at left). Click

the OverDrive Media Console link.

Clicking the link will take you to a new website that allows you

to download and install the software. On the right side of the

website, choose your operating system (OMC is even availablefor some mobile phones). Once you've selected your operating

system, click the Download Now button, as shown at right.

Your web browser will now prompt you to download the file or

to install the software. Depending on your options, you caneither choose to run the file (that is, start up the installation

program as soon as it's finished downloading) or save it.

Choose your preferred option (select Run if in doubt) andclick OK to download the software to your computer. If you

choose to save the installation file, you will have to find whereyou downloaded it and double-click the file to open it and

being installing OMC.

Once you've opened the installation file, it

will guide you through the process ofinstalling OMC. Use the Next button to

navigate through the installation. The

installer will require you to agree to theEnd User License Agreement and will ask

you where on your computer you'd like to

install the program (if in doubt, leave thedefault).

After navigating through the installation program, you will be able to open

OMC from the icon it placed on your desktop, from the Start Menu, or fromthe entry in your Applications folder on a Mac. Look for the small icon shown

at right.

OverDrive Media Console main screen

Once you checkout audio or video titles from Library2Go, they will open and download in

OverDrive Media Console. We'll talk a bit more about how to do this later, but for now, here's a basic overview of the OMC main screen.

Depending on the title, different Library2Go books allow you to do different things. For

instance, some titles allow you to burn them to a CD or transfer them to an mp3 player. These restriction are placed on the files by the publisher. If a particular title cannot be

transferred or burnt to disc, the options will be greyed out in OMC.

Searching for titles on Library2Go

Now that we've seen OverDrive Media Console a bit, let's go find some content to put in

it! Go back to your web browser and find the Library2Go website again. Near the topmiddle of the page, you'll find a handy search bar like the one shown below.

Finding E-books Online, p.5

Action buttons:

Allow you to listen to or

watch, transfer to an mp3

player or iTunes, burn to CD,

download, or delete titles.

Media Library:

Organizes your

checked-out titles

by author, title,

media type, etc.

Title list:

Shows the title you

currently have checked

out from Library2Go.

Using the search bar, you can find specific titles, authors, subjects, or formats that

interest you. Type your desired title or author into the box on the left, then select the

format you'd like (a list of formats is shown in the screenshot above) by clicking thesmall down arrow to the right of All Formats. If you'd like, you can also use fields box to

search for a specific title, author, or ISBN. Once you've entered your desired search

terms, click Go. We're doing a sample search for books by the author Neil Gaiman, andthe results page is shown below.

A search result, like the one shown

at right, will include a briefdescription, an average rating given

by users of Library2Go (like you!),and detailed information on the

format of the file, whether it will

work on a Mac or PC, and whetheryou can burn it to disc. If any of the

Plays on icons are greyed out, it

means that the title cannot be usedon that device, is not in that file format, or cannot be burnt to disc.

Navigation:

The Previous

and Next links

can be used to

scan through

the list of

results.

Titles:

Here are the

individual items that

match your search.

From here, you can

click the title to get

more information,

add them to your

cart, etc.

Sorting options:

Use these options

to change the

order in which

your results

appear.

Clicking on the title of a result willtake you to a page with further

information about the title. This

includes the publisher, publicationdate, subjects, further information

about the file itself (e.g. its size, length, etc.).

Scrolling down on the descriptionpage will also reveal a longer

summary of the title, author

information, and more details onwhat you can and cannot do with the

file (e.g. burn it to disc). Finally, make sure to check out the If you

like this title, you might also

like . . . section. It shows books thatmight interest you that other

Library2Go users have checked out.

You can also simply browse the titles on Library2Go, rather

than searching for specific books. On the lefthand side of the

Library2Go website, you'll see several short menus like theone shown at left. You can use these to browse different

formats and genres of books. Click on one of the shown

genres, or click More... to view other genres.

The main page of Library2Go also provides several titles to browse. For instance, below isan example of available MP3 audiobook titles (i.e. ones that can be checked out now).

Just click on the title of the item to view more information.

Finding E-books Online, p.7

If you're on the Coastline website (http://www.cooslibraries.org), there's another easy

way to search Library2Go titles. On the main page, just click the tab near the top that

says Library2Go. It will open a search box that lets you search for specific titles orauthors and limit them by file format or subject.

Your 2Go cart, holds, and wish list

Once you find an available item that

you want, simply click the link that

says Add 2Go Cart underneath thesearch entry for the item (see the

example at left) or on the itemdescription page. The 2Go Cart is a

temporary holding place for you to

save items before you check themout. This way, others won't be able to check them out while you're still perusing the

collections. Once you click Add 2Go Cart, you'll be taken to your cart and shown what

you currently have in it.

Many titles can only be checked out by a certain number of people at one time, so somemight be unavailable. Instead of seeing Add 2Go Cart, unavailable items will give you

the option to Place a Hold. This means that you'll be placed on a waiting list for the item

and will be notified when it's ready to check out. When you click Place a Hold, it willtake you to the following screen:

Finding E-books Online, p.8

Enter your email address to get notified when the item is ready to check out. Then click

the Place a Hold button. Library2Go will then confirm that the hold was placed.

You can also add any item, even currently unavailable ones, to a wish list by clicking the

Add to Wish List. The Wish List is basically a way to save titles you'd like to checkout in

the future but that you are yet ready to check out for whatever reason.

Checking out and downloading items

Now that you know how to add items

to your 2Go cart, feel free to keepadding items as you find them.

When you're ready to check out, click the 2Go Cart link near the top

of the Library2Go screen. You'll be

shown the various titles you'veplaced in your cart, as shown at

right. Your 2Go Cart lists the items

you've placed it in while you've beensearching the Library2Go website. It

saves the titles for 30 minutes, sothat other people cannot check them

out before you.

You can checkout a maximum of six

titles on your account at one time.

They check out for varying periodsdepending on the format of the item.

The files will automatically disappearafter the checkout period ends, so

you don't need to worry about late

fees or getting them back on time.Unfortunately, checked out items

cannot be returned early.

Once you've reviewed your items, click the Proceed to Checkout link near the bottom of

your 2Go cart.

When you proceed to checkout, you will be prompted to login to your account. You can

login anytime by clicking the Login link near the top right of the Library2Go website aswell. When you login, you'll be taken to the page shown below.

Finding E-books Online, p.9

In the box next to Library, click the small down arrow to get a list of libraries. SelectCoos County Library Service District. Then, type the number on the back of your

Coastline library card into the library card number box and click the Login button.

If you have any MP3 titles in your cart, you may be asked to confirm the Library2Go MP3

terms of use. Click the Yes button to confirm, if the terms of use page appears. Once

you've confirmed the term of use, you'll be asked to again confirm that you want tocheck out the items in your cart. Do so by clicking

After you've checked out the items

you want, you'll be taken to a screenwhere you can download the items.

Simply click the Download button

underneath the title. Download timeswill differ depending on the file type,

size, and your internet connection.

When you click the Download link

your web browser will ask you if youwant to open or save the file, as

shown below. Choose Open with.

Audiobook and video titles will default to open in OverDrive Media Console. E-book titles

will open in your e-book software, such as Reader Library or Adobe Digital Editions. Theinitial file that you download from the Library2Go website is actually quite small; the full

file will download in OMC or your e-book software.

Finding E-books Online, p.10

When you download an audiobook or video file, it

will open a window in OMC asking you which parts

of the title you'd like to download. Titles are oftendivided into parts to make them a bit easier to

download. For instance, audiobooks are often

divided into CD-sized parts. You can select whichparts you'd like to download using the checkboxes

on the left side of the window. Select the parts ofthe title you'd like to download, then click the

OK button. We recommend that dial-up users

download only one or two parts at a time to helpprevent download errors.

Once you start downloading a file, you can see how far along your download is by clicking

on a title in OMC and looking at the bottom of the window.

Using files in OverDrive Media Console

Once your files are done downloading, you can begin to use them! The right side of

Overdrive Media Console will show you the titles you currently have downloaded, as

shown below.

Let's start by looking at the audiobook files that you've downloaded. Clicking on a titlewill allow you to do many things with the title using the buttons at the top of OMC. Some

options may be unavailable, depending on the rights allowed by the title. Here are your

options:

Finding E-books Online, p.11

Play lets you listen to the file right from your computer.

Transfer allows you to put the file onto a portable MP3 player or your iTunes

library.

Burn enables you to burn titles to CD, for titles that allow it.

Download lets you re-download the file or download different parts of it.

Delete removes the title from OMC and your computer. It is still counted

against your checkouts on Library2Go until the title expires.

Properties lets you see the rights you have on the file and view the item

description/summary.

Transferring and burning files

Audiobook and some video titles can be

transferred to portable MP3 players. To doso, connect your MP3 player to your

computer. Then, click the file you'd like to

transfer and click the Transfer button.

The OverDrive Media Console TransferWizard will open. Use the Back and

Next buttons to move through the wizard.

If you have multiple MP3 playersconnected, it will ask you to which device

you'd like to transfer the file. You can then

select which parts of the title to transfer tothe player. OMC will then transfer the

selected parts to your MP3 player and thenconfirm when the transfer is finished. Now

you really can listen to the file on the go!

For titles that allow it, you can also burn audiobooks to CD so that you can listen to them

in your car or CD player. To burn to disc, click the title you'd like to burn in OMC thenclick the Burn button.

Finding E-books Online, p.12

The Burn Wizard will open. Insert arecordable CD into the disc drive on your

computer. Like the Transfer Wizard, the

Burn Wizard will walk you through theprocess of burning a disc. Select which

parts you'd like to burn (a part usuallycorresponds to one burnt disc), then click

Next. OMC will now burn the selected

titles to disc. It will prompt you when youneed to insert a new blank disc. The

burning process could take a while

depending on the size of the file.

Transferring files to an Apple iPod or iPhone

Some titles on Library2Go are able to be transferred to an iPod or iPhone. The process is

slightly longer than transferring to other MP3 players, but it is still fairly simple.

To transfer files to an Apple device, you first have to transfer the files into iTunes. You do

this using the same process described above to transfer the file to a non-Apple MP3

player. Click the title you'd like to transfer in OverDrive Media Console. Then, click theTransfer button. If you have a non-Apple MP3 player connected to your computer, you'll

need to select iTunes from the options. Otherwise, OMC will assume you want to transferthe file to iTunes. As with the process described above, navigate through the Transfer

Wizard to put the file into iTunes. You'll be able to select the parts of the file you want.

Once the Transfer Wizard is finished, open iTunes. If you look in your Music library, you'll

find that your audiobook title will be there.

Finding E-books Online, p.13

Depending on your

settings in iTunes, youcan now sync your iPod

or iPhone as you would

normally and transferthe audiobook(s) to

your device. If iTunes isnot set to sync

automatically, just click

the icon for your iPod oriPhone on the left side

of the iTunes screen and

then click the Syncbutton in the bottom

right corner.

If you look on your iPod or iPhone, you should now find the audiobook

you just transferred to it. You can now enjoy it as usual!

Videos from Library2Go

In addition to audiobooks, there are

several video titles available fordownload from Library2Go. You can

search, browse, and check them outthe same way you can with

audiobook and e-book titles.

Unfortunately, they are only usableon computers using Microsoft

Windows with Windows Media Player

software.

When you download videos from Library2Go, they will open in OverDrive Media Consolethe same as audiobooks do. As with audiobooks, you can select which parts of the video

you'd like to download. Video files are large, so they can take a long time to download.

Finding E-books Online, p.14

The first time you select a video title inOMC and click Play, you may receive an

error message saying Unable to acquire a

license to play the selected title. Toacquire the license, click the Tools menu

at the top of the OMC window, then selectWindows Media Player Security Upgrade.

A message prompt will come up. Click

OK, then click Play on the followingwindow to download the upgrade.

Selecting a video title in OMC and clicking Play

will now allow you to watch the video. If you click

the small icon shown below, you change the sizeof the video on your screen, including making it

cover your entire screen with the Full Screen

option.

E-Books in Library2Go

E-books in Library2Go act a bit differently than audiobooks or videos. Namely, they do

not open in OverDrive Media Console. Instead, they'll download in your e-book programsuch as Adobe Digital Editions (links to download it are on the Library2Go website) or

Reader Library. E-books are in PDF and EPUB format and are compatible with Windowsand Macintosh.

Finding E-books Online, p.15

When you click Download to get an e-book from Library2Go, it will open a small file,

much like audiobooks and videos. The file will open in your e-book software, which will

then download the e-book file itself. Below is example of an e-book being downloadedinto the Sony Reader Library software. All screenshots for e-books will be shown using

Reader Library. You can check out a Sony Reader, and try out the Reader Library

software, from Coos County Libraries: http://cooslibraries.org/record=b1489623.

To transfer files to your e-reader, you

first must authorize your computerand your e-book device. This is a

requirement placed on the file by

Adobe. To authorize the computer, you need to sign up for a free

membership with Adobe. Open a

web browser and typehttp://www.adobe.com/membership

into the address bar. Press Enter.Once on the site, shown at right,

click the Create an Adobe Account

button and follow their steps tocreate it.

Once you've created an account, you can nowauthorize your computer and your e-reader. When

you try to copy a Library2Go e-book to yourdevice, it will give a message like the one shown

at left. Click Yes to say that you'd like to

authorize the device, then enter the email andpassword for your newly-created Adobe account.

Now you can copy the files freely to your device.

The message wording may differ slightlydepending on your e-book software.

Now that you've authorized your computer and e-reader, you can transfer the books

you've checked out to your device. In Reader Library, you can simply drag the files fromyour library to the Reader icon shown on the left side of the software. Select your title by

clicking and holding your left mouse button, then move your cursor to the e-reader icon

and release your mouse. This process is shown below. You might also notice that yoursoftware will tell you how many days you have remaining on your checked-out item.

Finding E-books Online, p.16

Checking on your Library2Go account

You can check up on what you have checked out, on hold, or on your wish list anytime bygoing to to the Library2Go website, logging in using the link at the top right, and clicking

the 2Go Account link near the top of the page.

You can even adjust your default loan period byclicking the Lending Periods option. On the

Lending Periods screen, find the media type

for which you'd like to change the lending periodand click the box to the right of the type.

Lending period options differ depending on the format.

That's a quick introduction to Library2Go. We hope that you enjoy the service! If youhave further questions, you're welcome to email [email protected] or contact your

local library.
