Of course, Chinese, Indian, Korean, Japan books also displayed in USApublish library. Some Burmese tried to get permit to display Burmese book at Daily City, SF public libraryand I don't know they success or not.

In Singapore, old Burmese and young Burmese setup a LPK Burmese Library in 2006 for barrow politic& knowledge books. Their library located at Peninsula Plaza 4th floor. Young generation tried very hardto survive this library. Yes, a lot of people barrow books with bar-code reader. Free of charge. Thank Youto volunteers.Yes, bookself is easy to setup. Many library in overseas/ inside-Myanmar already completed by publicdonation but barrow system is not successful. In Myanmar - I remember, public libraries were too manyby government in 1970, but now finished.Europe countries, Japan, Korea .. they have many public libraries but south east asia countries Thai,Malaysia, Vietnam .. i visited and unable to find public library.Only Singapore has1. Every Primary/Secondary schools have library , can barrow books. Government practise students toread books at early young age.2. Every Poly Technic (diploma) and University (degree) in Singapore has very large library. Student canbarrow free of charge.3. Public Library, as this Ko Than Lwin's article 26 super libraries are located at whole Singapore

We explore the opportunity of Burmese book to keep in Daly City Public Library.

Reasons:

1. There are ~10,000 Burmese living in Daly City (bigger than other counties)

2. We do not have capacity to setup our own library.

3. Burma military junta has no democracy and no election for 46 years.We are learning democracy via USA. One of the way to educate democracy is“reading the democracy books” and “build a community”.

Military government made Burma from "top 10 wealthiest country in Asia" to "Bottop 10 poorest country in the world"in 46 years period. Since, 1988 most Burmese noticed "NO HOPE" and migrated to other countries. More than 3millions Burmese migrated to neighboring country (Thai, Malaysia, Singapore) and developed countries (US, Japan,Australia, Korea ..etc). In Sept 2007, a hugh Buddhist Monk uprising was brutally oppressed by killing them. May2008, Nargis Cyclone destroyed lower Burma by killing 200,000 people and 2 millions homeless. Military governmentafraid off US, UN and ban all aids to affected area. Mean let his own people die in hunger is better than losing theirpower. US, UN has no choice, what they can do is "accepting Burmese as refugees in US, EU countries"... Followingtable showed "Burmese refugees are top of US acceptance .. 20% of 48,281 refugees in US (2007) are Burmese.What we can do is "In God We Trust" as a Christian Burmese. As a Christian and Muslim, "It is God will" and as aBuddhist, it is "Shay-Kutho".

a) start with ~200 good books about Burmese culture and demoncracy.b) We will volunteer if need

2. We get space (eg. A book shelf) and manage our volunteers to minimise librarymaintenance time.

b) Book record will be manual card system.Catalog will be volunteer by Burmese labor

At present, Carol is trying to get in touch with a representative from another cultural group in Daly City. This groupalready has space in our community and we are trying to find out if they would be interested in housing yourcollection. We are hopeful that they will be able to accommodate. If they are, I imagine you would want them tohave the reference collection as well as the rest of your materials housed there. If you are still interested in havingus house your reference collection, we would need you to donate those books to the Daly City Public Library. If thatis acceptable, we would need to know which neighborhood has the most interested/largest Burmese population, sowe could decide which branch library should house the reference collection.

Please let me know what you decide.

Hello Joseph,

As promised, I discussed housing the Burmese Language Book Collection at the Daly City Library with CarolSimmons as well as the supervising library staff and other librarians.

Carol is going to speak with City Management in an effort to procure some space elsewhere in Daly City to houseyour collection. We do not believe that housing the collection in a public library makes sense at this time since thematerials are privately owned.

We will be in touch in the near future with an update concerning space availability.
