LIDAR in the Pines for Garmin by Boyd Ostroff, revised 1/13/2018 Overview LIDAR in the Pines is a map of Southern New Jersey that merges aerial photography with LIDAR data to produce a 3d effect accenting surface features that wouldn't otherwise be visible. The quads folder provided here contains a set of .kmz files named to match USGS 7.5 minute 1:24000 topo maps. See the image below for coverage. The .kmz format was originally developed for Google Earth and should be compatible with a variety of software, but this documentation will deal solely with Garmin's Basecamp software and recent model Garmin handheld GPS devices. Installing the maps on your computer First, you must install Garmin Basecamp software, which is available as a free download for Windows and Macintosh computers here:

The .kmz format was originally developed for Google Earth and should be compatible with a variety of software, but this documentation will deal solely with Garmin's Basecamp software and recent model Garmin handheld GPS devices. Installing the maps on your computer First, you must install Garmin Basecamp software, which is available as a free download for Windows and Macintosh computers here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp Start Basecamp, create a new list and name it LIDAR.

Next open the quads folder contained here, select all files and drag them to the LIDAR list that you just created. Wait while the data is imported into Basecamp.

You should now be able to view the imagery. If it doesn't appear, click on the LIDAR list to highlight it and confirm that Show Overlays is selected at the bottom of the screen. If you don't have any other maps installed on your computer, then the imagery will be shown along with features from a crude Global Map.

Basecamp requires that you choose a map from the dropdown menu, but you can hide the Global Map by installing the included blank pines map. Full installation instructions are provided in the extras folder. After installation, choose blank pines map from the dropdown menu .

Installing the maps on a Garmin GPS Is your GPS compatible? These devices are not compatible: Nuvi Series, Drive Series, Dezl Series, RV Series, Zumo 390/395/660, GPSMap 60, GPSMap 76, eTrex Vista, eTrex Legend and other older devices. These devices accept a maximum of 100 map tiles: Colorado, Dakota, Oregon 200, 300, 400, 500 and 700 series, GPSMap62, GPSMap 78, Edge 510, 800, 810, Rino 600, eTrex 20/20x, eTrex 30/30x, eTrex Touch, Zumo 590/595, Astro 320, BMW Motorad Nav V These devices accept a maximum of 500 map tiles: GPSMap 64, Montana, Alpha 100, Monterra, Oregon 600, GPSMap276cx? Unfortunately, only a small portion of the LIDAR in the Pines can be installed on most GPS units. Each file contains 25 map tiles so you can only install 4 quads (4 x 25 = 100) on a device with a limit of 100 tiles (See above). You can install 20 quads (20 x 25 = 500) if your device has a limit of 500 tiles. Connect your GPS to your computer and open the Garmin folder. If you don't see a folder named CustomMaps, create one. Open the CustomMaps folder and drag the desired files to it, subject to the limits described above. Copying maps with Windows

Copying maps with a Macintosh

After copying the desired maps to your GPS, disconnect it from your computer, restart it and enable Custom Maps in the Map Setup menu on your device. You must zoom in to .5 miles or closer in order to see LIDAR in the Pines on your GPS. Resources Download the universal format map for Mobile Atlas Creator: https://boydsmaps.com/lidar-in-the-pines-classic/ Visit https://boydsmaps.com for more maps Data sources and technical details National Elevation Dataset 1/9 arc second data provides 3d terrain for LIDAR in the Pines. The native resolution of this data is approximately 3 meters (10 feet) per pixel. New Jersey 2007-2008 aerial photography was sampled at 3 meters per pixel and mapped onto the 3d terrain. Lighting, color and other parameters were then tweaked to reveal as much surface detail as possible. Finally, the results were converted to .kmz files that meet Garmin's Custom Maps specification.
