STANDING ON THE EDGE OF SUMMER

A Mixtape by Davao Music Nation

Summer is here and what better way to experience it than to listen to some local tunes. We have compiled a list of local tracks that

will top off that summer vibe. Here goes…

Lost Tribe, “Let’s Ride”Even though their song “Himig” could favorably be picked as a summer or beach anthem, this song off of their Southtown Bwoy album also provides the same chill vibe when you are trying to relax on a cool sum-mer night.

The Sound of Go, “Fall a Little More”This tune is ideal for joy rides. Take the vocalists’ word for it and simply “Sit back!” Be wary of the city’s speed limit as well because this pop punk jam could unconsciously take you over the limit if you’re so into it.

Tramonto, “Saline”Perfect for the romantic summer getaway. This song could be the perfect soundtrack while you’re walking by the shore hand in hand with that special some-one or when you’re both relaxing under a blanket of stars.

Kamaggong, “Kalma”One can never go wrong in picking island music as part of your summer mixtape. As the title suggests, keep calm, relax, and chill.

South Breed, “Baby Come Back”This song provides urban flavor to the playlist. You can all just bob your heads to the verses and sing your hearts out when the chorus plays.

WeRideDynamite, “WRD Wants to Party”Just when you want to get lost from the hassles of the urban life and your own daily struggles, crank up the volume and look forward to that unforgettable summer party. Davao’s version of noise rock is just a perfect fit for it.

Thea Pitogo, “Around the World”A break from distorted guitars and beats, this tune is perfect while you’re heading to that summer desti-nation. Let Thea’s voice and ukelele serenade you on your way despite bumps and stopovers.

Jayson in Town, “Naiiba”There’s no better way to wrap up a summer mixtape. This reggae love song sums up what summer is all about. Have fun and spread the love.

LIEU Magazine got the chance to sit and chat with the dream team behind the much frequented liquor space, The Brewery. Sans

Seng, the team talks about beginnings, booze, and the latest Brew.

Jerome Go, Kerwin Lu, Paeng Rodriguez, and Ryan Seng have come far from being four childhood friends who went to La Salle together. Sharing the same fond-ness for drinking, they came home, got bored, and de-cided to turn their “’passion’ into a business.”

A variety of high-quality liquor bottles are displayed on the shelves for all to see. It’s not just for the show: “What they see is what they get,” says Rodriguez. It’s the team’s decision to serve only the best that keeps the place bustling. “We don’t want to compromise our quality,” Lu adds, so only imported bottles end up in their cocktails.

It’s not just topnotch liquor that rakes in the kids, it’s also their love for their customers. Customers sipping only the best need not feel out of place, in fact, they can feel right at home. “We want you to feel at home here. That’s how we work,” says Lu. You’re free to play

your own tunes and you’re welcome to talk to the man-ager if you have any complaints. It’s Wednesday, B*tch is Brewery’s quirky promo that serves one free glass of the bar’s “Cocktail of the Night” to ladies. Here’s the exciting bit: even “girls at heart” can avail the promo.

After four years of running its first store in Obrero, a new branch was opened in Damosa last March 2014. “The younger crowd is pushing the older crowd away, so we opened another one.” But loyal customers need not fret, the place still boasts that at-home vibe.

For a bar that doesn’t skimp on top quality, picking your poison comes at a reasonable price. It’s a place where you can let loose and enjoy great company, or be damn comfortable when you’re flying solo. Brewery stands as one of Davao’s premier establishments offering supe-rior liquor and great customer service at the hearts of Davao nightlife.

bringing theA-GAME

When an innocent mishap turned brooding hip-hop fan Jonathan Gameng into a Nirvana-loving band geek, you’d think things would get pretty predictable afterwards. At the heart of this mix-up, Jon proves that he’s a sponge – soaking up all that’s new and good before he churns out something that is uniquely

his own.

Jonathan Gameng doesn’t really like to be called a DJ. His soundcloud (www.soundcloud.com/Jon-Game) bears a meek, barely there “DJ” in its description, but he goes on to clarify that he’s a musician, and adds that the title would only limit him. With a slew of credits, including being in the music scene for a decade and counting, he can rightfully claim, or not claim, the DJ title. Beneath the name game, Jon is charging on to become an artistic force to reckon with.

For his first gig at Sa’Less (now Sales Bar Tekanplor), playing as Villain, or V!ll@in, he had to “compromise... so it doesnt shock anybody.” Towards his audience, he felt that “it was strange for them [because it was all-orig-inal dubstep]... but I was happy with what I got.”

A year after his Sa’Less stint, Jon can be found at the lofty Blue Room, Apo View Hotel on most Saturdays. He calls the place “happy ecosystem of people,” and talks about the management’s open doors: to younger audiences, and to lesser known forms of music. Sipping the finest drinks over dubstep can be all but unconven-tional, but has worked magic. All thanks to his ingen-iously sneaky idea, to be “subtle” about injecting his own style over audience favorites, he can share new mu-sic with his audience without having to alienate them. He cautions that “[the] bottom line is: it boils down to entertainment.”

In between hushed projects, personal experiments, and playing for local acts in the circuit today, Jon Game’s mu-sic manages to mean something more than just wicked beats and edgy style. After all that’s said and done, the reluctant DJ is determined “to put Davao somewhere on the map... [and] if [some]one becomes successful, everybody wins.”

Come peak seasons, Mati’s famed surf haven, Dahican Beach, becomes riddled with chronic parties and barkada booze-fests. If left undisturbed by a hoard of city-slickers, a story of passion, and hardcore love for the sea, surfaces over

the mildly violent waves.

Page 38: LIEU Issue No 10

Where the waves are

The beach becomes a dead giveaway for a hideout spot during summertime. But you’ve got to admit, our souls are mysteriously captivated by this sandy, watery destination – even as you’re clamouring for a spot on the shoreline.

At Amihan sa Dahican, Mati, the infamous tides are aggressive: ripe for the picking for surfers, skimboarders, and those who find thrill in having their bodies transported by mildly violent waves. Increasingly, it has become host to an exodus of city-slickers seeking to bring booze to the beach. Off-season, the scene is different: the place is stripped of its pretensions, and without meaning to, its stories rise to the surface. In the same fash-ion, LIEU correspondents have stumbled into a gem of a story – the unique community behind this famed surfer haven, Team Amihan.

Nomad no more

“It’s a lifestyle fuelled by love,” says Winston Plaza. Sporting an immaculate tan that he and his surfer buds don, he describes to us the story of his love affair with the sea. A regular juan back in the days, he too had his fair share of the 8-to-5 workload. Left uninspired and discontent, he sought refuge in water sports. It wasn’t long before he decided to stay in Mati for good.

Family matters

Plaza describes how the tight-knit Amihan Team functions like a family. Everyone is assigned a task: man the store, welcome the guests, clean the surroundings. Even the little ones have a chore. When it comes to leisure, smoking and drinking are highly discouraged, if not totally disallowed. (In any case, it’s hard to catch a wave if you’re heaving to high heavens.) Everyone has to finish schooling, no ‘buts’. Above all, they’re taught good manners, and to respect nature and all those who inhabit it.

Page 39: LIEU Issue No 10

A fantastical climb

Supported by local government, the best of Ami-han Team have been sent to familiar waters and distant oceans to compete in water sports: Malay-sia, Thailand, Hong Kong, and California, USA, to name a few. Apart from international sights, it’s the stuff of fantasies: scantily-clad beauties, wicked afterparties, and gear sponsorships. It’s no wonder countless kids have tried their luck at becoming the ‘next big surfer’. Unfortunately, Plaza stresses that not all become famous, and it takes a whole lot of practice and passion to get there. Plaza, alongside Sonny Boy “Bayugyug” Aborpo, had their share of frustrations, disappointments, and stroke of bad luck on their way to Penang, Malaysia back in 2012 for the 6th International Skimboard Competition. Despite all odds, Plaza won 1st runner-up in the stand-up paddle board race and Bayugyug nabbed 1st place for skimboarding.

When the sea calls

This lifestyle isn’t for everyone. Plaza admits he’s lost relationships along the way, the unconventional lifestyle to blame. He shrugs it off and continues talking about water sports, and how the sea com-pletely changed his life. He doesn’t seem to mind that all our conversations are interrupted by crash-ing waves.
